‘Insurgent’ video features stunts, new factions, mysterious box

A new featurette for “Insurgent” is out, offering fans of the Shailene Woodley-starring dystopian tale a behind-the-scenes look at new characters, locations and stunts in the sequel to last year’s “Divergent.”

“Insurgent,” based on the second novel in Veronica Roth’s bestselling YA trilogy, follows young heroine Beatrice “Tris” Prior (Woodley),  a girl who discovers she doesn’t fit neatly into one of five rigidly divided societal factions in a dystopian future version of Chicago, but rather has aptitude for multiple factions — a dangerous trait known as divergence. She joins Dauntless, the faction based on bravery, to hide her secret, and there meets love interest Four (Theo James).

In “Insurgent,” Tris and her friends are fugitives on the run from ruthless leader of Erudite (the faction based on knowledge) Jeanine Matthews, who is hellbent on hunting down divergent people like Tris.

“In the first movie, you don’t really know exactly what Erudite is up to,” Kate Winslet, who plays Jeanine, says in the featurette. “In ‘Insurgent,’ it’s crystal clear.”

The featurette shines a light on a mysterious box, decorated with the symbols of each of the five factions, that did not appear in Roth’s novels but was featured in a trailer for the film; unlocking it appears to be at the heart of Jeanine’s obsession.

“The box takes a lot of my favorite scenes from the book and puts them in the same place at the same time,” Roth says in the featurette.

The video offers a closer look at Tris’ visit to the peace-loving Amity faction, a farming community led by Johanna Reyes (Octavia Spencer), as well as spotlighting the so-called Factionless, who have been banished from society and live in poverty in the outskirts of civilization. The Factionless, led by Four’s mother, Evelyn (Naomi Watts), might prove potential allies for Tris and her friends in their fight against Jeanine.

The video also features a peek at some of the visual effects, including the serum-induced simulations introduced in the first film.

“It’s a very ambitious action movie,” James says in the video.

“Divergent” earned more than $288 million at the international box office last year. “Insurgent,” slated for release March 20, is directed by Robert Schwentke (“The Time Traveler’s Wife,” “Flightplan,” “Red”). In addition to Woodley, James, Winslet, Watts and Spencer, the movie features Ashley Judd, Zoë Kravitz, Maggie Q, Keiynan Lonsdale, Mekhi Phifer, Miles Teller, Ray Stevenson and Jai Courtney.

The third book in Roth’s dystopian adventure series, “Allegiant,” will be split into two films, due out in 2016 and 2017.
