The first trailer for “Iron Man 3,” which Marvel released at midnight PST, reveals glimpses of a story far darker than its predecessors.

The two-minute trailer implies that self-proclaimed “genius, billionaire, playboy philanthropist” Tony Stark loses everything he values, perhaps including his girlfriend and girl Friday Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), at the hands of Marvel super-villain the Mandarin, brought to the big screen for the first time by Ben Kingsley.

The film, directed by Jon Favreau’s former “Iron Man” and “Iron Man 2″ consultant Shane Black (“Kiss Kiss Bang Bang”), is due out May 3, 2013.

The trailer (check it out below) begins with a shot of a battered Iron Man falling into snow, his arc reactor flickering on his chest as he removes his mask and reveals a bloodied face.

“Nothing’s been the same since New York,” he says in voice-over, presumably referring to the events of “The Avengers,” in which the Chitauri alien race, led by Loki, tried to conquer Earth, starting with the Big Apple. “I can’t sleep, and when I do, I have nightmares.”

The voice-over continues as a quick shot shows Aldrich Killian (Guy Pearce), a scientist who in the comics sells a super-soldier virus to terrorists. (We also see him kiss Pepper Potts’ cheek later in the trailer.) “Honestly, there’s a hundred people who’d want to kill me,” Stark says, and then, gesturing to Potts, adds, “I hope I can protect the one thing I can’t live without.”

What follows is the complete destruction of Tony Stark’s world, beginning with his armored suits, lined up along the wall, which explode one by one. We see the Mandarin’s helicopters launch missiles at Stark’s seaside home, which crumbles down the cliff, and a suited-up Stark sinks into the wreckage.

The trailer also repeats the Mandarin’s voice-over from the footage screened during Comic-Con International this summer.

“Ladies, children, sheep,” he says in his chilling, deliberate cadence that isn’t entirely unlike Tom Hardy’s Bane in “The Dark Knight Rises.” “Some people call me a terrorist. I consider myself a teacher. Lesson No. 1: Heroes. There is no such thing.”

In the comics, the Mandarin was an exiled orphan who discovers a crashed spaceship. He mastered the alien science he found there and kept 10 powerful rings used to drive the ship. He used the rings’ power in his schemes for world domination and became one of Iron Man’s most formidable foes, from his first appearance in 1964′s “Tales of Suspense” No. 50, by Stan Lee and Don Heck.

Though Marvel President Kevin Feige has said that the big-screen Mandarin’s back story won’t follow the comics, focusing in technology instead of magic, the trailer showed the villain’s ring-garbed fingers.

The trailer also shows Iron Man saving people as they fall from a plummeting airplane; Stark lying in a hospital room, surrounded by doctors; Pepper Potts grimacing from behind some kind of metal restraints; Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau) lying among rubble; and a new suit with a star-spangled paint job. There’s also a disturbing image of a mystery suit grabbing Pepper Potts while she’s in bed with a sleeping Tony Stark. The trailer ends with Stark, pulling his Iron Man suit through the snow.

Let us know what you thought about the trailer in the comments.

wow is all i can say. that preview makes me wish it was april already. i will be seeing iron man 3 when it comes out. awsome!!!

  2. Wang says:

The trailer looks great, and it could potentially be the best one yet. I love that it is picking up from the Avengers, but then moving into its own story line. The Mandarin is a good villain choice, even if they go away from his magic. As they talked about in Thor, magic is just another science, so I don't think it will affect the character. I am looking forward to the next instalment.

  3. sam says:

Dont know, the first look at trailer made me confused !!! and why again the arc reactor design is round ??? and i was expecting more than the avengers.. little dissapointed..

  4. Lee says:

Teaser flavor is Very Dark Knight Rises-ish.

  5. @undefined says:

Great trailer. Too bad the bad guy seems like another Bane. Other than that, it looks appealing.

  6. Chris says:

Surely the "painted" War Machine is actually Patriot. Not War Machine

  7. mystdancer50 says:

I have to say that I am totally pumped to see this new installment. I think that the Iron Man grabbing Pepper while she's sleeping beside Tony is either one form of the nightmare, be it Tony's or Pepper's, or it is an Iron Man suit that works on its own (don't know how to explain that) or runs of Tony's thoughts? It seems to me that some of the clips were alluding to the fact that Tony could operate the suit without being in it (the silver headgear when he references protecting Pepper, for instance) and we know that the one suit responds to bracelets upon his wrists from The Avengers when Loki throws him out of the window. All in all, though, I am so looking forward to its release in May!! :)

  8. palmstring says:

That War Machine couldn't be related to the Iron Patriot, could he?

  9. kimosabe34 says:

I hope nothing happens to Potts!!But we all know inevitable .

  10. Max Rodriguez says:

It'll probably be extremis because he controls the armor by thought with it (and it was also a super soldier virus)

  11. mobb says:

Iron Man is the smartes beside BATMAN. But what makes him stand along is that doesnt much about life or other till something happen that is very bad around him and other

  12. Big Al says:

ok i dont get why they painted war machine the color of the Iron Patriot which is norman osborn in the Dark Avengers and having the Mandarin using technology instead of magic really bums me out being a big comic book fan

    • Jei says:

I completely agree. The first two movies already showed technology equipped villains. I really want to see mandarin uses magic against ironman

    • Ren says:

      War Machine painted "Iron Patriot",???

there's 96 Appearances of Iron Patriot Armor

Clearly this costume pushes out Marvel's Avengers and spider-man cross-over (Norman Osborn/aka/ Green Goblin as the Iron Patriot Taking over S.H.I.E.L.D/the avengers).

BUT!!! Iron Man 3 Flashes the extremis Armor AND War Machine in the Iron Patriot colors!

Let's say it is Iron Patriot armor:
Remember; Tony Stark's head is being messed with in the 3rd movie( he has nightmares). maybe there could be a coincidence to James Rhodes'/ war machines FALL{ hint: Norman Osborn beats War machine in Iron patriot armor. War Machine Vol. 2: Dark Reign

…that's right before a super invasion against the Avengers.

      Let's say its NR-Phantom .9d M.A.G. Armor:
this would make more sense to Iron Man: Extremis fans. including bad villian THE MANDARIN!
and the attack of Stark drones/ armor self-destructing scenes- and a nano virus creator
Aldrich Killian( kills himself), which causes Tony Stark's ill-madness.

Starks bad dreams/hallucinations are nothing more than whats to come. remember before the Iron patriot in Civil War: Attack of the skrulls, there was extremis.

let's not spoil what we see on trailers.

  13. alan says:

i dont think Rhodey is the upgraded War Machine because in the trailer we was hurting people on the plane unless there was bad people on the plane but, we dont know for sure. PLEASE stop saying it feels like Nolan's Batman, its common sense that every trilogy is the darkest, lowest point for the protagonist so, just stop and, as for Mandarin, Marvel isn't trying to copy Bane this was all planed out, it's not like they said " hey, Bane was a beast in TDKR, lets make our bad guy like him, come on now guys.

    • Random Bystander says:

war machine/iron patriot is rhodey, just look at the hi-res pics, it say Lt. Col. James Rhodes on the chestplate. It is also not him punching a hole in the plane it was tony or at least the new gold armor.

    • Eli says:

I feel like that's exactly what they said, but all in all I'm hyped to see it

  14. popsamuel says:

that star suit is also the one that attack pepper its a new suit guys not an old one

  15. popsamuel says:

guys that star suit is a new suit not/ war machine

  16. ciaopaparazzi says:

Let's turn the Iron Man franchise into crap like the Dark Knight.

    • Roger Sterling says:

lol yeah crap 2 $1 billion grossing films and TDK getting Oscar consideration sounds really crappy to me. I think you're mistaking them with Iron Man 2.

  17. Martin says:

Yawn…soleless and storyless just like Transformers and all the other Avenger related movies. I hope this trend ends soon.

  18. Ryansorensen says:

I think that Rhodey is going to be the bodyguard for the president or something…thats why he is the Iron Patriot. Its been mentioned that the Plane attack is actually on the president and air force one…so that whole idea would explain a lot. Because the Mandarin's goals as a terrorist in this film is leading us to suggest that he'll go after the Oval Office and strike america at the heart…enter IRON PATRIOT. He can be the body guard…whilst tony is exiled and sorts out his shit. As a side note. STOP IT WITH THE COMPARISONS TO THE DARK KNIGHT. GOD.

  19. Bev says:

Apparently none of you are old enough to realize that Iron Man eventually dies in the 'old' comic books. What I have seen here so far is awesome. So take a seat, do not give this such a hard time, and enjoy him while you can!

  20. My favorite movies of all time along with Gladiator. If they make Iron Man 10 , I'd like to watch all..
