News that J.K. Rowling is writing a “Harry Potter” spinoff movie has magical-minded Muggles, including actors from the original films, abuzz on Twitter.

The author and Warner Bros. on Thursday morning unveiled a new agreement to make more movies based on Rowling’s “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” — a 42-page textbook of sorts, published in 2001 after the fourth “Harry Potter” novel — and the adventures of its fictional author, Newt Scamander.

“Although it will be set in the worldwide community of witches and wizards where I was so happy for seventeen years, ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world,” Rowling said in a press release. “The laws and customs of the hidden magical society will be familiar to anyone who has read the Harry Potter books or seen the films, but Newt’s story will start in New York, 70 years before Harry’s gets underway.”

FULL COVERAGE: Harry Potter through the years

The movie’s Hufflepuff hero Newt is a magizoologist (one who studies magical creatures, of course). The first film in the announced series is to be penned by Rowling — marking her screenwriting debut.

“I thought it was a fun idea, but the idea of seeing Newt Scamander, the supposed author of ‘Fantastic Beasts,’ realized by another writer was difficult,” Rowling said in the release. “Having lived for so long in my fictional universe, I feel very protective of it and I already knew a lot about Newt. As hard-core Harry Potter fans will know, I liked him so much that I even married his grandson, Rolf, to one of my favourite characters from the Harry Potter series, Luna Lovegood.”

It’s fitting, then, that Evanna Lynch, the Irish actress who portrayed the quirky Luna Lovegood in the “Harry Potter” films, was one of the first “Potter” fans to react on Twitter.

MORE: Six ideas for more ‘Potter’ spinoffs

In a series of tweets, Lynch celebrated the announcement, praised Rowling and nominated herself to play one of the fantastic beasts. Here’s a sampling of her reaction:

Lynch wasn’t the only “Potter” alum to publicly celebrate. Devon Murray, who played fellow Hogwarts student Seamus Finnigan, and Scarlett Byrne, who played Pansy Parkinson, also weighed in.

No word yet from Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson or Rupert Grint, but plenty of Potter-heads also took to Twitter to share their take on the news.

What do you think about Rowling’s new project? Let us know in the comments.

  1. BoyUnderTheStairs says:

Love the Evanna tweets! Not sure if this qualifies but it would be a shame to deviate from the original HP cast. Kind of like the Beatles. Insanely popular with all their quirks. Since HP chucked the elder wand – DH part 2. Perhaps their is room for a Hogwarts graduates post mortem where all the chaffed characters come back as ghosts to join their living Hogwarts alumni. Kind of like Field fo Dreams.
