‘Jupiter Ascending’ trailer: Channing Tatum’s perfect hunting machine

Dec. 10, 2013 | 7:30 a.m.

The first trailer has arrived for “Jupiter Ascending,” Andy and Lana Wachowski’s newest sci-fi venture, and the clip offers some of the same mix of futuristic spectacle and existential exploration that catapulted the duo to international acclaim with “The Matrix” nearly 15 years ago.

Set for release next year, “Jupiter Ascending” stars Mila Kunis as Jupiter Jones, a young woman born on Earth whose “genetic signature” marks her as a target for the Queen of the Universe. Channing Tatum plays Caine, identified early in the trailer as a “perfect hunting machine,” who becomes Jupiter’s protector. Sean Bean and Eddie Redmayne also have featured roles.

The film is the first from the Wachowskis after their audacious literary adaptation with Tom Tykwer, “Cloud Atlas,” which was based on the 2004 novel by David Mitchell and starred Tom Hanks, Halle Berry and Jim Broadbent playing multiple interconnected roles across the centuries.

Like their “Matrix” films, “Cloud Atlas” distinguished the Wachowskis as superlative visual storytellers, and “Jupiter Ascending” appears to continue that tradition, with eye-popping space imagery rendered on a grand scale.

“Jupiter Ascending” is set to arrive in theaters July 25.

Excessive use of quotation marks makes this opinion seem poorly formed and littered with irony.

Channing Tatum with pointy ears and eyeliner. Let's just say that "hunting machine" was not my first thought

Litivious, do you like to think while watching a film, or do you light up, kick back, and fall asleep? Cloud Atlas had an exceptional story line. All you needed to do what think about it. Just a little bit.

I bet Sean Bean dies at some point.

A familiar trope, when does humanity get to grow up in this Galaxy of ours?
