The new trailer for “The Legend of Hercules” promises lots of sword-and-sandals action when the latest big screen telling of the chesty mythical hero opens in theaters early next year.

Directed by Renny Harlin, the action-adventure stars “Twilight” heartthrob Kellan Lutz as Hercules, the half human son of Zeus whose strength is unrivaled among men. In the new film, Hercules is forced to battle his way through a host of gladiator-style matches to earn his freedom and rescue his kingdom from his the cruel rule of his own step-father.

It’s not the first large-scale fantasy adventure outing for Lutz — the actor also starred in “Immortals” alongside Henry Cavill and Luke Evans, playing the god Poseidon.

Opening Jan. 10, “The Legend of Hercules” also stars Gaia Weiss, Scott Adkins, Liam Garrigan and “Spartacus: War of the Damned” star Liam McIntyre.

The film won’t be the only telling of Hercules’ epic saga on the big screen next year, however. Dwayne Johnson is also set to play the hero for director Brett Ratner in “Hercules,” due in theaters July 25.
