Angelina Jolie says that when thinking about playing a live-action incarnation of Maleficent, the wicked sorceress from Disney’s animated classic, “Sleeping Beauty,” it was chiefly important to preserve at least one facet of the grand villain.

“I wanted to make sure we didn’t lose her sense of wicked fun,” the actress says in a new behind-the-scenes featurette included in the Blu-ray and DVD editions of “Maleficent,” due for release Nov. 4.

Disney’s lavish retelling of the “Sleeping Beauty” story from the point of view of the dark sorceress became one of the breakout hits of the summer — earning upwards of $69 million in its opening weekend and going on to bring in more than $240 domestically. (Its worldwide total stands at $757 million.)

The film starred Jolie in the title role, casting the character as a custodian of a lush woodland wonderland threatened by the nearby kingdom of humans — her childhood friendship with a young boy who later becomes key takes a dark turn that sets the character on a path toward evil.

But her relationship with the young princess in hiding Aurora (Elle Fanning) offers an opportunity for her redemption.

“I thought this would be a character that I hope young girls and boys, but especially young girls, would relate to and they would see that they have a sense of justice,” Jolie said in the featurette, which also sees screenwriter Linda Woolverton describe the evolution of the character in the script.

“When I was little, [seeing Maleficent] was like when you look at Marlene Dietrich for the first time,” Jolie told The Times earlier this year. “She was so elegant and so strong, and seemed to be having a great time. She always seemed … like she had a secret, like something else was going on and you couldn’t get close enough to her to know what that was, and so she remained a mystery.”
