‘Maleficent’ trailer: Angelina Jolie transforms into Disney sorceress

The first teaser trailer for Angelina Jolie’s “Maleficent” has arrived, showcasing just how great the actress looks wearing the signature horns of the Disney sorceress.

Due in theaters May 30, 2014, “Maleficent” is a live-action retelling of the 1959 animated classic “Sleeping Beauty,” but with a focus on the events that turned the character to the path of evil.

The new clip mostly centers on a conversation between Maleficent and the Princess Aurora (Elle Fanning), but concludes with what appears to be one of the haunting climatic moments from the animated tale — the wicked conjuror raising a forest of thorns from the ground.

Earlier this summer, footage from the film, including a scene in which Maleficent cursed the baby Aurora, was revealed for the first time at Disney’s D23 convention.

“Since I was a little girl, Maleficent was always my favorite,” Jolie said at the convention. “I was terrified of her, but I was also drawn to her. I wanted to know more about her. She had this elegance and grace, yet she was wonderfully, deliciously cruel.”

“Maleficent” is directed by Robert Stromberg, who won an art direction Oscar for Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland,” and the film’s cast also includes Sharlto Copley, Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Miranda Richardson, Juno Temple and Lesley Manville.

Linda Woolverton wrote the screenplay.

Looks great, hoe it doesn't have a stupid ending like Snow White and the huntsman did.

Going by the clip, this movie is nothing special. Some special effects, some over acting, not really scary, not very interesting.

The plot will be interesting (Maleficent's take on Sleeping beauty). Jolie will probably be tantalizing and cruel (as seen in beowulf), but I can't help but feel that the scenes seem to borrow from snow white and the huntsman's marketing strategy in the first trailer. The CGI seems to be in first rendering stages, or borrowed from early 2000's inept CGI. As with first trailers, the special effects will always be better in the finished product, but in general, the scenes here look like a trip to Disney land, not a new world, with a stop off at splash mountain for the giant thorns that are popping up from the ground. All in all, I thought this film would be a dark take on a Disney tale; it seems it is just another kiddy film. Pirates took itself seriously in the beginning, i'm not sure this film will. Perhaps it is too early to tell.

I can’t wait for this film! I am glad they followed a little from the original Disney tale so far from what I got to see in the trailer! Snow White, and Hansel and Gretel just to mention a couple were one of the few horrible productions that followed with Disney titles and the stories had nothing to do with the original tales. What is the point of recreating this beautiful stories and distort them. Thet have nothing to do with the original stories. On the other hand I am not a big fan of Angelina Jolie just because her movies are so predictable and redundant! And since I didn’t expect to see her in a movie like this I am actually looking forward to see what she has to offer in this film. Considering most of her acts are Lora Croft type, wonder stunt woman where nothing happens to her kicking asses everywhere. Once again her movies are super predictable that I am looking forward to see her act in this film playing a different role!
