‘Man of Steel’ poster shows Superman in cuffs

Dec. 03, 2012 | 4:50 p.m.

It’s been a big day for movie posters. First, the “Star Trek Into Darkness” poster was released, and now we have a glimpse of Kal-El himself, Superman, looking not very superhero-y. In fact, he looks like he’d be more at home on an episode of “Cops.”

The new poster for “Man of Steel,” Zack Snyder’s upcoming reinvention of the Superman franchise, shows Superman (Henry Cavill) in handcuffs, surrounded by soldiers who apparently haven’t learned to lock the hands behind the back. We can only assume that Superman is only playing along with these soldiers, because he could totally bust himself out of those cuffs without a second thought. Unless they’re made of kryptonite.

Either way, “Man of Steel” looks as if it won’t be all positive vibes and derring-do, a la the 1978 movie version of the character. Courtesy of a story co-written by “Dark Knight” guys Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer, this interpretation of the character looks to be a bit darker than previous incarnations.

The film, also starring Amy Adams, Michael Shannon and Kevin Costner, is set to open June 14, 2013.

Great Poster. Clearly this version of Superman will address the type of fears that powerful people would have if such a being really existed. I am willing to wager that Clark allows this indignity in a bid to show the world he is not here to conquer. Imagine the fear and panic that the media would spew out if such a man made him self known, forget Donner's take of cheering crowds and applause, smiling police and happy chappy journalists. They would scramble the jets, hide the President and arm the nukes first. Superman would be ever a creature of suspicion by those that wish to rule…. Lex is more like us than we wish to admit. Cant wait.

Absolutely amazing poster, and i gotta agree with everything Chris said. I'm amazed at how perfect they got the look of Superman himself. Finally a man that actually looks the part as in the comics, a chiselled statuesque figure. And the narrative direction is compelling too, a 'what if Superman really existed in our world' approach.

I like how the US government is gonna be involved in this movie. I mean he is an alien from another planet.

  4. Benjamin says:

Wow I am actually looking forward to a Superman movie. As I am sad for the Batman movies to be done with so many villains no given the Nolan twist that would be great to have seen (Harley Quinn, Mr. Freeze, Riddler, Penguin, and some people would call me insane, but a Mad Hatter!) I am interested to see what the Man of Steel as for us. Maybe this will be the movie that will get me into the Superman franchise as much as I am with the Batman. Both comic and movies.
