Tom Cruise is embarking on a new mission.

Production kicked off Monday on the fifth film in the “Mission: Impossible” franchise; the upcoming release will see Cruise reprise one of his most successful roles, super-spy Ethan Hunt, for director Christopher McQuarrie.

The actor is also producing the film, which McQuarrie wrote with Drew Pearce and Will Staples.

The production is scheduled to shoot in Vienna, Morocco and London and will see franchise veterans Simon Pegg, Jeremy Renner and Ving Rhames join Cruise on screen.

Alec Baldwin and Rebecca Ferguson are also set to appear in the film.

The previous film in the series, 2011′s “Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol,” directed by Brad Bird, earned nearly $700 million at the global box office to rank as Cruise’s highest-grossing film.

Since then, though, the actor has appeared in several projects that had a more difficult time connecting quite as strongly with moviegoers including 2012′s “Rock of Ages,” “Jack Reacher” (the latter of which McQuarrie wrote and directed) and last year’s “Oblivion,” which was directed by “Tron: Legacy” filmmaker Joseph Kosinski and was set on a future Earth left decimated by an alien invasion.

Earlier this summer, Cruise starred in Doug Liman’s “Edge of Tomorrow,” the sci-fi action adventure is based on Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s award-winning novel “All You Need Is Kill.” Cruise played Lt. Col. Bill Cage, an officer dropped onto a futuristic battlefield only to die and be reborn again and again at a moment before the siege.

Although the film generally earned positive reviews — it is rated 90% fresh on the website Rotten Tomatoes — it struggled to reach the $100 million mark at the U.S. box office, though it did bring in $364 million worldwide.

TOM CRUISE IS JUST THE BEST – PROFESSIONAL, FUNNY, HANDSOME AND AS FAR AS I AM CONCERNED, ONE OF THE VERY BEST ACTORS OF HIS TIME! FOLLOWING HIM FOR YEARS AND KNOWING HE WAS TRULY GYPPED OUT OF AN OSCAR FOR "BORN ON THE 4TH OF JULY", HE HAS NEVER FAILED TO PUT IN 110% IN HIS ACTING AND BEING THE NICEST ON THE SET OF ALL HIS FILMS! I FOLLOW HIS CAREER AND INTERVIEWS ALL THE TIME.
