New ‘Dark Knight Rises’ trailer: Batman and Bane face off

June 19, 2012 | 1:45 p.m.

A new trailer for “The Dark Knight Rises” was just released, a month before the conclusion of Christopher Nolan’s epic Batman trilogy is slated to hit the big screen on July 20.

Although it contains much of the same footage introduced in the last trailer and the six-minute preview released in December, the new trailer adds several new scenes that will spark some speculation among fans of the comics, most notably a face-off between Batman (Christian Bale) and villain Bane (Tom Hardy).

In the scene, Bane calls the Caped Crusader by name — “Mr. Wayne.” We see a few blows, then the trailer cuts to Bane walking away, Batman’s shattered mask in hand, leaving fans to wonder if Nolan drew from the punishing fight scene that left Bruce Wayne with a broken back in the comics’ “Knightfall” arc.

The new trailer gives a glimpse of Anne Hathway’s Selina Kyle sporting cat ears, a closer look at the flying vehicle that could be the Batplane and Bane attacking what looks like the stock exchange, furthering the Occupy Wall Street vibe that earlier trailers seemed to channel.

The trailer also spotlighted some supporting characters, including John Blake (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman), Lucius Fox (Morgan Freeman) and Alfred (Michael Caine), though apparently missing from the trailer is Marion Cotillard’s mysterious character, who shared a sexy kiss with Bruce Wayne in the last trailer.

I’m very impressed with the trailer it looks like a EPIC conclusion to a EPIC Trilogy.

  3. Ravi says:

Looks magnificent. Bring it on. Why do we have to wait another month lol?

  4. heather says:

Can’t wait! Though i still don’t understand why this series has to end. I’ve never liked Batman until this version.

Luckily for you, according to Bale and in opposition to what he said after filming The Dark Knight, he'd like "the challenge" of doing a 4th one. So maybe we will get a fourth one set in this continuity, who knows? They said they wanted to do a reboot in 2015, but maybe they'll just keep going with these. Hopefully, they would not become stale if that were the case…

    • Graham says:

Chris Nolan reportedly didn't want to continue this take on Batman after Heath Ledger died. It looks like the trilogy will manage to include Bane & Catwoman without getting silly. Hollywood will do another reboot once the next generation of actors throws up someone with substance.

  5. luvbatman says:

Bane …looks a lot better in the comic books than in the movie, his mask looks like an air filter mask.

Bane looks legit…….I know where I'll be July 19 at 11:30pm

It appears to be an allegory for the failed policies of the Bush Adminstration and all of the violence and suffering Bush and the criminal Republicans.

  9. Michael says:

At least it's ending on a very good and limited note instead of getting dragged to absurdity, as I'm sure WB would just love to do

I agree. That errie guitar whining (like Joker’s theme) in the background was a brilliant addition to what we’ve already heard in the previous trailers.

It is so rare for a franchise to pump out three perfect movies, especially a superhero based franchise. In my own opinion, Lord of the rings was amazing, (and we’re getting two hobbit movies with that to boot) but alot of other franchises screw it up: Xmen and Xmen 2, blade and blade 2, spiderman and spiderman 2. The list goes on. I can patch in x men first class for Xmen 3 as a makeshift perfect trilogy (Xmen origins: wolverine was not a great movie), I liked all three Matrix but people really despised the last one so I have to give in there a bit, but for the most part, they tend to really screw it up by the third movie. Nolan knows his craft and keeps the right frame of mind and people around him to make GREAT movies. I haven’t seen one yet from him that I didn’t thoroughly enjoy, and that seems to be the consensus from a majority of critics and fans alike. Nolan also plans ahead with his (david s goyer and jonathan nolan wrote all three Batmans with him) stories, and pays careful attention to how each arc plays out. He’s said he doesn’t like doing sequels, and wasn’t going to continue after Batman Begins, unless the story was worth continuing. Same applied with The Dark Knight leading to Rises. He believes in keeping you emotionally invested with his characters so you aren’t bored halfway through. And let’s face it, Batman is a character who is pretty damned emotional. But realistically sad enough, he’s ending it here and not going on because of a lot of reasons. One is that the last franchise SUCKED when Tim Burton left after Batman and Batman Returns, and the franchise/story continued with Joel Shumacher with the ever dull Batman forever and the wrethed Batman & Robin. Nolan said there are so few good third movies to a trilogy, so this is a challenge he was up for. After this, he is gone, not allowing the story to continue with a new director to become another Joel Shumacher disaster. I’m sure there were more reasons, but that one is enough for me. Shows that Warner Bros has learned thier lesson in the Batman Department. Although Cristian Bale has said he’d love to do another one if Nolan was up for it. Hmmmm………

Either way, it’s probably best to reboot and hand it over to the new guy. Who knows, it might be greatest thing since sliced bread. But I doubt it ;P

Personally, years back when i had to wait for Batman Begins to arrive so many years back, I was patient because I had no idea what to expect until I saw it- an element of fear i had because of how the former franchise ended which as previously stated, turned out terrible. When I saw Begins, I was won over aching for more and obsessed like most die hard fans to grab and scrap of news until Dark Knight hit the theaters opening night. And DAMN that was worth it. Literally, It made a billion dollars- it really was THAT big, lol. But now, I’m dreading this last month. I’m jumping at every scrap like its 2007 all over again, but I’m enjoying the calm before the storm. These precious moments of waiting for the big day in anticipation won’t come again, unless we get an equally interesting and fresh reboot of the franchise again. Otherwise, enjoy it while it lasts. Closure in month, ladies and gentlemen.

Imagine if it was Chris Nolan’s first bomb and we were all seriously wrong? Lmao

I recall that Nolan was skeptical about doing a third Bat film, since he realized that number 3's don't do well. The big difference here is that Nolan has a proven track record and can do as he pleases. The morons at Sony didn't give that freedom to Raimi, nor did WB have the best intentions in mind for Schumacher (ditto for Fox with X3)…..sure, this is a chance to make a crap load more money, but we know that Christopher Nolan and his collaborators care about what they put their name on. TDKR looks to be a deeper look at the Batman legend and promises to be a huge thrill to see. I'm looking forward to it

@heather because it's better to end a series too soon rather than too late. If they keep going it will eventually get stupid.

it will be a breathtaking experience

I love the scene in the tunel with the quick flashes of the caped crusader. I hope this will be as f!#@ing amazing as it looks

  17. @cousin_dave says:

Despite what has been said, Marion Cotillard is obviously playing Talia in TDKR

  18. Pain in the Bane. says:

That scene during the MTV Movie awards, the sneak peek, where Bane is holding his head with his scared back facing us. What would you say that room is? It looks like he is in pain, not sure if Catwoman is talking to him: "Don't be shy." Anyway so glad Rises is coming. I'm hoping Bane does pump up in the movie; not huge, but more muscle mass in the arms, back and chest. However a magazine issue talk about Bane's mask and how it keeps him medicated, hinting he was in some terrible accident or experiment. Love this character and the way Nolan & Hardy have built him up. He could win best villian of the year in my opinion, and Loki was interesting too.

  19. Orlando Louis says:

The Dark Knight is my favorite movie of all time, because though Christian Bales performance was great, Health Ledger portrayed the most menacing and spot on performance of any villain portrayed in movies. I assume TDKR will be amazing, and so will Tom Hardy (Bane) but I dont think it will surpass the Dark Knight. But I am ready to be proven wrong.

  20. Nicholas Wojton says:

Bane broke Batman's back in the comic, He killed him back when they were killing off super heroes left and right. I had every book in the series in triplicate and had them all autographed by the writer and illustrator, Doug Moench A& Mike Manley. They have been lost or stolen. I wonder how much they would be worth today, especially with the birth of the Nolan series. I hope they continue to do the story justice. Nolan has done that so far. shit Heath Ledgers Joker is probably the best portrayal of a comic book character EVER. I hope rhat batman dies in the end. It would be a great twist and would be paying true homage to the orgianal comic book story.
