It’s official: “Pacific Rim 2″ is a go. In the wake of director Guillermo del Toro’s comments earlier this month that he had begun working on a script alongside screenwriter Zak Penn (“The Avengers”), Universal has announced that it will be partnering with Legendary Pictures to release the film in 3-D on April 7, 2017. Del Toro will be directing the film and writing the script with Penn.

In a video released Thursday from Toronto, where he is finishing up work on the gothic thriller “Crimson Peak,” which hits theaters next year, Del Toro announced that he and Penn, alongside the original “Pacific Rim” writer Travis Beacham, will be creating an animated “Pacific Rim” series as well.

You can check it out below.

“Pacific Rim” was a modest domestic box office success but was a surprising international hit. $309 million of its $411 million gross came from overseas and, as of last year, it was the sixth-highest-grossing American film in China.

Last year, at a Hero Complex Screening Series advance showing of “Pacific Rim,” Del Toro spoke  about the guiding philosophy for every film that he makes.

“I try to celebrate diversity … it’s not singing ‘Kumbaya,’ it’s just saying that we all need each other to survive, which is a message that’s on ‘Hellboy’ or ‘Devil’s Backbone’ in equal measure. We need to trust each other because metaphorically we’re all in the same robot. If we don’t trust each other, we don’t move.”

  1. Raymund says:

Extremely excited about the sequel! Pacific Rim is the perfect example of how to make a "Robot" movie, unlike the Transformers franchise…

  2. I Have Spoken says:

    $20 says he backs out.

  3. Who Knows... says:

Not overly crazy about the first one but he does deliver the action. Hope he can keep the budget down for the new one.

  4. James Jones says:

Hell yeah. Loved the first one.

  5. David says:

Very very excited! Pacific Rim was not perfect and some parts make me groan still but it is a personal favorite and it was a dream come true to see.

  6. thorlo6 says:

I loved the first one, have it on Blu Ray! Can't wait to see the new one, should be a humdinger!

  7. Old Man Parker says:

Awesome News! I Loved Pacific Rim! There's so mud to the epic story of "the Kaiju War" …. so many things we only heard tiny bits about, but didn't get to really see and learn about. The Audio book has a surprising amount of really smart info that adds a lot to the story. Wow! Very Very exciting!

  8. Amir K says:

Nice not only do we get a Godzilla sequel but also Pacific Rim as well, the Kaiju Genre is back.
