Roger Corman to receive Legend Award at New Media Film Festival
Filmmaker Roger Corman, the B-movie veteran who launched countless Hollywood careers in addition to building his own reputation as a prolific writer, producer and director, is set to receive the Legend Award from the New Media Film Festival.
Writer-director John Carpenter will present Corman with the prize on June 11 at the Landmark Theatre in Los Angeles during the festival’s closing night festivities, organizers announced Monday.
Now in its fifth year, the New Media Film Festival was founded by Susan Johnston to celebrate “stories that exemplify the power of the cinematic arts to inspire and transform;” the festival will take place June 10-11 at the Landmark.
Corman, who was born in Detroit in 1926, last directed a film in 1990 — “Frankenstein Unbound” — but his resume includes dozens of titles as a producer, director, writer and actor stretching back to 1955’s “Five Guns West.” Among some of Corman’s most fondly remembered works as a director are 1960’s “The Little Shop of Horrors” and the classic American International Pictures productions starring Vincent Price in adaptations of the stories of Edgar Allan Poe.
During his decades in the industry, Corman helped launch the careers of such actors as Peter Fonda and Jack Nicholson and also mentored filmmakers including Ron Howard and Jonathan Demme.
Demme presented Corman with his honorary Oscar in 2009.
As part of the New Media Film Festival’s celebration of Corman’s cinematic legacy, sculptor Brent Armstrong created a new piece paying tribute to the work of Paul Blaisdell, the special effects artist who designed monsters for Corman during his early years in the business.
Carpenter, of course, is a legend in his own right — the respected veteran is best known for a series of landmark genre films including “Halloween,” “Escape from New York,” “The Thing” and “Big Trouble in Little China,” among others.
