The first image of Jason Momoa in costume as Aquaman is out, revealing the “Game of Thrones” star decked out as the DC Comics superhero.

“Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” director Zack Snyder tweeted the image late Thursday with the caption “There is only one true King. #unitetheseven.”

It’s unclear whether the hashtag refers to the seven seas, over which Aquaman rules as the King of Atlantis, or the seven members of the Justice League superhero team, of which Aquaman is a founding member.

The character is expected to appear in Snyder’s upcoming film, which also unites Batman (Ben Affleck), Superman (“Man of Steel” star Henry Cavill) and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot). The other original members of DC Comics’ elite superhero team are Green Lantern, the Flash and Martian Manhunter.

In the new image, Aquaman appears to have undergone a dark fantasy makeover, with Momoa sporting long hair, armor and tribal tattoos, not dissimilar to his character Khal Drogo in “Game of Thrones.”

In the comics, Aquaman is Arthur Curry, heir to the throne of Atlantis but cast out of the underwater kingdom when he was a baby. He grew up on land until the Atlanteans reclaimed their king. In the ocean, he possesses the ability to breathe underwater, telepathically communicate with sea life and swim at high speeds, and on land, he has enhanced sense, superhuman strength, and nearly impenetrable skin.

Snyder recently phoned into a Detroit radio show to defend the character, who has long been the subject of derision among comic book fans.

“Aquaman has some cool abilities,” Snyder told the radio show. “People are like, ‘Oh what? Does he talk to animals? Cause that seems like what he does. Or fish?’ The cool thing with Aquaman is his trident. So you have to realize that could cut the flesh of Superman if they came in contact. That’s a thing that’s in the canon. He’s super strong ’cause of course he can exist at these super deep depths so when he comes up here he’s crazy strong.”

“Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” opens in 3-D on March 25, 2016.

doesn't really look like aquaman. my son wont even recognize him. kinda like wolverine, he never looked like wolverine in any of the movies. aquaman wears orange. wth.

    • you says:

waaaah i'm going to have to explain to my son why a character looks different and actually spend time with him instead of putting him in front of the same rehashed drivel day in and day out so i can avoid having to actually talk about things with him waaaah

    • Man without a name says:

This is not Aquaman indeed. I really Like Jason Mamoa but he will never be able to sell me that he is Aquaman. Aquaman is blond.. It departs way too far from the comic book character. Too bad I was looking forward to the Movie.. Now I can't wait for the avengers, the characters are true to thier history and looks.

      • Joe Not Blonde says:

@Man without a name, actually the hulk could barely speak english when he joined the avengers and hawkeye was a member of a circus(pretty sure but certainly not a member of shield), ultron was a creation of pym not starks(pym is portrayed constantly in the comics as even more of a genius than stark), asgard was never portrayed as having alien/high tech but did use magic and hemdal(the bridge guardian)was blonde(like aquaman), I could probably go on but yeah they did not stay true to the original marvel story(I must say it did turn out pretty good despite this but would have been even better if they did not change so much). The studios always seem to think they can do better than what was a highly successful comic’s original story. I mean juggernaught was nothing like what he was in the comics especially the fact they made him a mutant.

    • John says:

Open your mind. These are fantasy, made-up superhero characters that were originally drawn as comics, so they are more open to interpretation than just about any other kind of character creation. I, for one, am happy that there are creative people out there willing to dust off a decades-old construction and do something different with it.

  2. Bad Kitty says:

Aquaman swims in his own poop, think about it!

  3. mckmell says:

Jason Momoa is hot in anything. Aquaman might be a joke but Momoa isn't. He'll redeem this character.

  4. RunningTornado says:

    Damn it!! Blond him up!!!

  5. Sarah says:

I am so excited about this. I love the idea of a samoan/maori/POC aquaman instead of a blonde/blue eyed/white dude. I love Momoa and he's a stellar actor. I think he's going to do a great job.

  6. Tippicul Blond says:

Can't wait to see Gal Gadot as wonder woman.

  7. JeffTech says:

Oh no, Momoa is not the one to be playing Aquaman.

  8. Dave says:

This guy is nothing like Aquaman. He will change the entire ambiance of the hero, making him a villain. I won't be watching this.

  9. Ian says:

Totally badass Jason! No more making fun of Aquaman!

  10. SallyS says:

What an excellent choice to play Aquaman! He makes the look…

  11. Paula says:

Jason Momoa looks great as Aquaman and he is a wonderful actor so I know he will bring aquaman to life in this movie all I can say is Get Me A Ticket Please! My fiends and I will be first in line to see this movie!

  12. elmntl1 says:

Jason Momoa as Aquaman LOVE IT super sexy playing the part of my favorite DC character now that's a WIN! #nerdgirllove

  13. Mr. Guest says:

Never been an aquaman fan, but I do think the updated look is better than his historical appearance.

  14. chris says:

oh good, another black and dark costume for BvS….

    • Joe Not Blonde says:

Don’t they seem to think a person of color MUST be barbaric/dark/etc.. Sad studio idiots.

      • John says:

It never fails: whenever a poster calls someone "stupid," the rest of their comment really reinforces that THEY are the stupid one. So, relax, Joey, it's just a movie featuring unrealistic, made-up characters originally intended for only children.

  15. Dawn says:

Love love JM! Now I'm an Auquaman fan!!

  16. Brian says:

a horrible choice, Zac Snyder is going to ruin the image of Aquaman as well as the movie. jason mamoa is a bad casting choice. they are trying to be politically correct to appease the public. I'm not appeased. Mamoa looks too much like king neptune and nothing like the Aquaman we know and have come to recognize.

    • John says:

Let me guess, Brian… If you had it your way, you'd probably cast The Lone Ranger's Armie Hammer and dress him in orange and green spandex, right? Ugh.

    • Catt says:

@ Brian..You are so right! Stick to the facts re: Aquaman….Wheres the blonde hair..?

      • John says:

The "facts"? This is a fictitious character with inhuman powers. Let 'em do what they want with him, and we'll see how the public responds once the movie is out.

  17. bob says:

    Rob Zombie as Aquaman?

  18. Adama Mirabilis says:

He's gotta have his hair died to make him more recognizable, other wise he is just like the Punisher, a ubiquitous actor can be set in play in any of their versions of the movie, and would not garner much fan support because of the revolving actor door. Aquaman has blonde hair.. it's just a fact that should be reflected in the Actor's look for the movie..

    • John says:

The comic character has had blonde hair for over fifty years, so why not hand him a box of Just For Men and see if your world still comes crashing down on you, Chicken Little. If the original artist had gone with black hair, and they were now casting a blonde actor, you'd be up in arms over that.

And when are you fanboys going to get that the movie-going audience is many times larger than the comic book crowd–these movies aren't made for you zealots entrenched in your idea of what a drawn comic character must look like fifty years after its invention.

    • John says:

Because hair color makes all the difference in the world. Ugh.

  19. Ludie says:

What is the idea of all the heart shaped scales?

  20. Ryan G says:

What if Ryan Gosling were cast as Aquaman? Talk amongst yourselves…

  21. Lewie says:

Resembles nothing of the Aquaman of yesteryears . Looks like the guardian person from Thor without the armor on .

  22. Guest says:

I think he would have been better cast as the Submariner.

  23. eyeofthebeholder says:

Jason Momoa can pull it off. He is definitely hot enough. He can poke me with his trident anytime, lol.

  24. comiccomic33 says:

So y’all do realize that every writer and artist change comes with character changes? And aquaman in the early 2000s had long hair and a beard with a miniharpon for one of his hands. And in the new 52 aquaman walks the line of hero anti hero. Much more of a bad mother of %#&3? Then he use to be.

  25. Joe Not Blonde says:

So why are they “tribal” tattoos? Why not just tattoos? Seriously what rock did you climb from under that you don’t know people from all over the world NOT in any tribe wear tattoos. Just, tattoos not “tribal” tattoos. If you know what tribal tattoos these are let me know from what tribe. Smh.

  26. Arthur Curry says:

I like the idea of Momoa as Aquaman. I think it makes sense for a King of the Seven Seas to be a "Pacific" Islander. The tats, not so much: Tlinglit markings and arm fishscales?? Why does WB think that dark-and-gloomy equals DC superheroes post-GREEN LANTERN? (It worked forBatman, yes; but he IS a dark knight, afterall.)

  27. D Shelton Parker says:

I am sorry, but this is discrimination in reverse.
I am white, and I have blue eyes, and I am an old man who grew up on these comic books. The only reason the heroes were created the way they were, is because they were created in the image of the men who did it in the first place.
It is not our fault that the other races chose not to create these comic book heroes.
No mater how many heroes you turn black, or anything other thing than what they were in the beginning .
They will always be stolen personae.
This change makes as much logic as turning Hitler black or Jewish.
It is just wrong. The same way it was when John Wayne play Genghis Khan.

    • John says:

Genghis Khan was a real person, so was Hitler. Aquaman is a drawn piece of comic book fiction. Do with him what you will, filmmakers.
