The White House rejected a petition to build a Death Star, but a different piece of “Star Wars” machinery has been brought to life — with Lego. On Thursday in New York City’s Times Square, Lego unveiled its largest model ever: A life-size X-wing Starfighter, constructed out of Lego bricks — 5,335,200 of them, to be exact.

The “Star Wars” X-wing replica, which weighs nearly 46,000 pounds and contains a full-scale R2-D2 in the cockpit, was created to promote “The Yoda Chronicles,” a new Lego Star Wars three-part animated series premiering next week on Cartoon Network. The model will remain in Times Square through Saturday. Afterward it will land at Legoland California Resort, where it will be on display through the remainder of 2013.

The X-wing Starfighter is, of course, the ship that Luke Skywalker and other members of the Rebel Alliance flew to victory against Darth Vader’s Death Star in “Star Wars.” The model in Times Square was created by 32 master builders — a real title at the Lego Group — and took about four months to complete. That’s not surprising considering its immense size; it stands 43 feet long, 11 feet tall and has a wingspan of 44 feet, according to the Lego Group. It’s based on a much smaller Lego Star Wars replica.

The model was created in a Lego model shop in Kladno, Czech Republic, and was engineered to hold up during transportation, setup and breakdown.

So the replica could be free-standing and survive earthquakes at its eventual home in California, the designers created a steel frame wholly covered in bricks, master builder Erik Varszegi told Time. (Check out the blueprints for the steel substructure in the gallery above.) Structural limitations also meant showing the X-wing with its wings closed instead of open in the iconic X-shape attack position.

The replica is big enough for children to sit in the cockpit, where a photo booth awaits them. And buttons on the back of the ship initiate sound effects from the film, such as the ship’s engine starting up and R2-D2′s bleeps and bloops. (Read this adorable first-person New York magazine account by the father of a 7-year-old who got to explore the ship.)

“The Yoda Chronicles,” which premieres Wednesday at 8 p.m. on Cartoon Network, focuses on the diminutive green Jedi master in the “Star Wars” prequels era. Yoda and his padawans fight the evil Darth Sidious, who’s plotting to create a new super-weapon. The three-episode series also introduces new character Jek-14, a clone who has been “enhanced” by the Force.
