Will Smith, Tom Hardy, Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney and Jared Leto are set to star in “Suicide Squad” for writer-director David Ayer.
Warner Bros. confirmed the casting of the upcoming film, one of a number of upcoming projects adapted from the pages of DC Comics, on Tuesday afternoon.
“Suicide Squad” features an all-star roster of villains who act as mercenaries, and the movie will see Smith play Deadshot; Robbie, Harley Quinn; Leto, the Joker; Courtney, Boomerang; while Cara Delevingne will play Enchantress.
Tom Hardy, who previously brought to the screen the Batman villain Bane in “The Dark Knight Rises,” will star as Rick Flagg.
Oscar winner Leto will be the first actor to play the Joker on the big screen since Heath Ledger delivered his touchstone performance in an earlier Batman film, “The Dark Knight,” for which he was awarded a posthumous Academy Award for supporting actor.
Judging from Ayer’s previous work (he wrote “The Fast and the Furious” and “Training Day” and directed “End of Watch” and the recent war film “Fury,” among other projects), the movie could have a particularly gritty sensibility, which might work well for a story about a team of super villains.
“Suicide Squad” is set for release Aug. 5, 2016.
DC also announced films for Shazam, the Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Cyborg and a two-part project for the Justice League.
