‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ trailer: Turtles get new origin tale

The first trailer for the upcoming Michael Bay-produced “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” was released Thursday, offering a glimpse of the latest big-screen incarnations of the heroes in a half shell.

The trailer opens with a montage of destruction scenes in what appears to be New York City, the turtles’ traditional stomping grounds, as actor William Fichtner’s voice narrates, “Crime, violence and fear have run rampant. Our great city is being destroyed. People want justice restored to this world.”

Fichtner’s character, rumored to be Shredder, is talking to Megan Fox’s April O’Neil, the turtles’ eventual ally, and offers up an alternate origin story for the mean, green fighting machines.

“People want heroes, Miss O’Neil,” he tells her. “But heroes are not born; they’re created. That’s what your father and I were trying to do — create heroes.”

What follows is a series action sequences in which the turtles take out some baddies in the subway and body surf down a snowy mountain. The movie mutants seem to take after the gritty characters from the original comics, created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird in the early 1980s, instead of their goofier counterparts, made famous in the animated TV series that ran from 1987 to 1996.

However, it seems that director Jonathan Liebesman has retained a dash of humor in the latest turtle tale — when Michelangelo (Noel Fisher) first meets an astonished April, he tries to allay her fears by removing his orange ninja mask, saying, “Whoa, chill. It’s just a mask, see? Don’t freak out.” April, somewhat predictably, faints.

In the comics, cartoons and movies, April has been portrayed as a computer programmer, a reporter, a ninja warrior, a scientist and even an archaeologist. In the film, it appears that Fox’s version totes a smartphone instead of a news camera and wears a yellow jacket instead of her trademark jumpsuit.

In addition to Fox, Fichtner and Fisher, the film also stars Alan Ritchson as Raphael, Jeremy Howard as Donatello, Pete Ploszek as Leonardo and Danny Woodburn as Splinter, as well as Will Arnett, Whoopi Goldberg, Abby Elliott and others.

What do you think about the trailer? Let us know in the comments.
