In the hit HBO series "Game of Thrones," Emilia Clarke plays Daenerys Targaryen, an exiled princess and last remaining heir in a long line of kings and queens of Westeros. “Game of Thrones” star Emilia Clarke has been cast as Sarah Connor in the upcoming “Terminator” remake, Paramount confirmed Friday.

The new “Terminator” film, from Paramount Pictures, will be the fifth film in the long-running franchise but the first in a planned stand-alone trilogy.

Clarke, best known for her portrayal of the dragon queen Daenerys Targaryen in HBO’s hit series “Game of Thrones,” has big shoes to fill.

Linda Hamilton originated the role in James Cameron’s 1984 sci-fi action flick and sequel “Terminator 2: Judgment Day.” Hamilton’s performance was considered groundbreaking as her character broke gender barriers to become a genuine gun-toting action hero.

Clarke’s “Game of Thrones” costar Lena Headey, who plays the cruel queen Cersei, also portrayed Sarah Connor in the short-lived television series “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.”

Little is known about the reboot, though Jason Clarke (“Zero Dark Thirty”) is reportedly in talks to play Sarah Connor’s son, John Connor, and original “Terminator” actor Arnold Schwarzenegger is rumored to be returning.

The movie is scheduled for a June 26, 2015, release and will be directed by Alan Taylor (“Thor: The Dark World,” “Game of Thrones”) and produced by Annapurna Pictures and Skydance Productions. Laeta Kalogridis (“Avatar,” “Shutter Island”) and Patrick Lussier (“Drive Angry”) are penning the script.
