Peter Jackson’s big-screen adaptation of J. R. R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit” is coming to a close with “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies,” which opens in U.S. theaters tonight.

“Five Armies” caps a saga consisting of six feature films set in Tolkien’s elaborate fantasy world Middle-earth — a project that began more than a decade ago with Jackson’s acclaimed “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy. The third film in that series, “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King,” won 11 Oscars, including best picture, best director, best adapted screenplay and best visual effects.

Although “Five Armies” does not seem destined for similar awards gold, fans of Tolkien and Jackson have already turned out in force overseas; the film has earned more than $122 million at the worldwide box office since opening last week.

“Five Armies” picks up after the events of the trilogy’s second installment, “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug,” which saw hobbit Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), dwarf king Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) and his dwarf company arriving at the Lonely Mountain to reclaim their homeland Erebor, where the villainous dragon Smaug (Benedict Cumberbatch) was guarding his stolen treasure.

The film also stars Ian McKellen, Cate Blanchett, Luke Evans, Lee Pace and Evangeline Lilly, among others.

One Response to ‘The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies’: 66 images from the finale

  1. Guest says:

It is such a shame that Peter Jackson gave the hobbit and the dwarves such short shrift in the final film, at the expense of video-game-worthy, tedious battle scenes and a simplistic, unmoving love story that never happened in Middle-earth. What is missing from the final film, even more than the first two, is the HEART of the film. The emotional core that makes us care about the fate of the hobbit and others who participate in the journey. For example, Martin Freeman turns in yet another utterly amazing and perfect performance, but Bilbo's (brave, emotional, etc.) scenes are inexplicably diminished by Peter Jackson's vigorous editing which renders those scenes so brief as to rob them of what could have been tremendous impact. Many loose ends are left loose, presumably filmed but left on the cutting room floor in favor of yet another bit of stunt or CGI work. Only serious fans should see this film… finding wonderful nuggets amidst the rest of it… but even they will be disappointed. It could have been so much more. I hate to say it, but although I was a supporter going in, I am now sorry that Jackson directed the films. He should make video games from now on.
