Tom Hiddleston, Natalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins took the D23 stage Saturday morning in Anaheim to promote “Thor: The Dark World,” the first of three featured titles upcoming from Marvel to be touted at the expo.

Hopkins received a standing ovation from the audience, but Portman and Hiddleston were received almost as warmly, taking the stage after Marvel movie chief Kevin Feige, who presented both the footage from the “Thor” sequel that was screened at Comic-Con International last month and a new scene detailing Portman’s astrophysicist Jane Foster’s first day in Asgard.

In the unfinished scene, Jane’s body seems to be having some trouble adapting to the Asgardian atmosphere, and she lies on a table being tended to. Odin storms in, noting, “She is mortal, she does not belong here in Asgard anymore than a goat belongs at a banquet table.”

Jane doesn’t take terribly kindly to being compared to a goat, but when she realizes exactly who Odin is, and that he’s aware of her, she says to Thor with a surprised smile, “You told your dad about me?”

Set for release Nov. 8, “Thor: The Dark World” sees the God of Thunder (Chris Hemsworth) forced to team up with his treacherous brother Loki (Hiddleston) to defeat a great evil, namely, the dark elf Malekith, portrayed by Christopher Eccleston, and Algrim (also known as Kurse), played by Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje.

Hiddleston commented on his appearance at D23 the day before when he serenaded the audience with a song from “The Jungle Book.”

“I’m not going to sing for you today,” Hiddleston teased the audience. “If you weren’t here yesterday, you missed it. Sorry.”

He added, referring to his turn on the Comic-Con stage as Loki, “I feel that I should apologize for not turning up in costume.”

No matter how dramatic the “Thor” presentation, it would have been difficult for D23 to match the excitement generated by Hiddleston’s surprise San Diego appearance last month, when he turned up in costume at the Marvel panel to tout his turn in the new movie, prompting the audience at one point to begin chanting “Lo-ki! Lo-ki! Lo-ki!”

In an interview with Hero Complex, Hiddleston said Marvel movie chief Kevin Feige actually approached him with the idea of opening the panel in character, though the enthusiastic reaction from the fans surpassed what he might have imagined.

“It was absolutely amazing,” Hiddleston said. “To go out there in costume, adrenaline was coursing through my body in a way that I haven’t had in a while.”

The latest trailer for “Thor: The Dark World” suggests an ominous, epic scale for the sequel, which was directed by Alan Taylor (“Game of Thrones”).

“Thor: The Dark World” was among several Marvel titles to get a promotional push at D23 on Saturday, Disney’s own answer to San Diego’s Comic-Con.

Unspooling at the Anaheim Convention Center, the weekend-long event kicked off Friday with programming focused around Disney’s upcoming animated ventures. Saturday’s presentation emphasized news from the live-action side of the slate, with titles including Brad Bird’s “Tomorrowland” and the upcoming sequel “Muppets Most Wanted” also receiving a push.
