‘Veronica Mars’ fans will get movie after huge Kickstarter success
Holy cow marshmallows: You sure do love your “Veronica Mars.”
On Wednesday morning, the show’s creator Rob Thomas, and its leading lady Kristen Bell launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise $2 million for a “Veronica Mars” feature film that would take place at the acid tongue sleuth’s 10th high school reunion.
Devoted fans did not hesitate to reach into their wallets, and in less than 24 hours they had raised the $2 million needed to get the project funded.
The project hit the $2-million number around 6 p.m. PDT.
But that doesn’t mean the fundraising will stop.
“Okay, here it is! Stretch goal. $3 Million or Logan Echolls doesn’t survive the movie! #VeronicaMars, #IMKristenBell,” Thomas wrote on his twitter feed earlier in the day.
“Two can play at this game @RobThomas… Guys if we get to 5 Million- ill Taze rob and video tape it!” Bell tweeted back.
“Veronica Mars” ran for two seasons on UPN and one season on the CW. Its small but devoted following was crushed when the show was abruptly canceled in 2007, and they have been clamoring for a feature film ever since.
A few years ago, Thomas pitched Warner Bros. a feature film “Veronica Mars” script but executives at the studio ultimately passed because they were not convinced there was enough interest in a Veronica Mars film.
But this time, it’s different.
“Kristen and I met with the Warner Bros. brass, and they agreed to allow us to take this shot,” Thomas wrote on the Veronica Mars Movie Kickstarter page. “They were extremely cool about it, as a matter of fact. Their reaction was, if you can show there’s enough fan interest to warrant a movie, we’re on board.”
Looks like there was enough fan interest.
