George R.R. Martin keeps his promises. After announcing on his blog that he was scaling back on convention appearances, as well as forgoing scripting any episodes for the sixth season of “Game of Thrones” in order to focus more on writing “The Winds of Winter,” Martin delivered a gift to his “A Song of Ice and Fire” fans in the form of an excerpt from the long-anticipated next installment of his popular fantasy saga. (Those not caught up with series should beware — there are spoilers below.) George R. R. Martin, whose “A Song of Ice and Fire” fantasy book series is the basis for the hit HBO show “Game of Thrones,” has released a chapter of his forthcoming book, “The Winds of Winter.” The book, with a release date yet to be determined, will be the sixth installment in the series and is a long time coming after 2011’s “A Dance With Dragons.” Martin has said the series will contain a total of seven books, with the final installment — “A Dream of Spring” — also forthcoming with no definite release date in sight.
