‘Agent Carter': James D’Arcy on Jarvis’ quippy charm: ‘Rambo, he’s not’

In Marvel’s latest series for ABC, the 1940s adventure “Agent Carter,” James D’Arcy provides the perfectly cultured counterpoint to Hayley Atwell’s sophisticated spy as Edwin Jarvis. The man Friday to Dominic Cooper’s Howard Stark, Jarvis becomes a key ally for Peggy as she sets about to try to clear Howard’s name after he’s accused of treason — their Tracy-Hepburn-flair unquestionably add to the period charm of the limited-run show. “It’s a really fun role to play,” D’Arcy said on the set late last year. “They write such fabulous banter for us. We have fun when we’re shooting, we have fun when we’re not shooting; it’s great.” (Click through the gallery above for a behind-the-scenes look at the making of “Agent Carter.”) Set one year after the events depicted in “Captain America: The First Avenger,” the series sees Peggy working for […]

‘Agent Carter’s’ Hayley Atwell: Super spy is a ‘woman before her time’

Hayley Atwell stars in "Agent Carter." (Marvel/ABC)
Hayley Atwell reprises her “Captain America” role as coolly capable spy Peggy Carter in Marvel’s new short-order series, “Agent Carter,” which premieres Tuesday night on ABC. While the adventure takes place in 1946, it deals with some decidedly contemporary themes, according to the English actress. “In terms of her actual personal journey, it’s something that’s very modern,” Atwell said late last year on “Agent Carter’s” Los Angeles set. “In many ways, she could be considered a woman before her time. There happens to be no one else in the series yet that is like her, that has caught up to her abilities that’s a woman. She’s having to pave the way.” Set one year after the events depicted in “Captain America: The First Avenger,” the series opens with Peggy still grieving for Steve Rogers, who is purported to have died […]

‘Agent Carter': Hayley Atwell reprises capable 1940s spy for Marvel TV show

Gracefully poised on a grand staircase inside historic Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills, seamed stockings just so, Hayley Atwell radiated old Hollywood glamour as she waited for the cameras to roll. The star of ABC’s new limited series “Agent Carter” rested one hand on a carved wooden balustrade as makeup artists retouched her red lips, then at the director’s cue launched into a Tracy-Hepburn-style routine with actor James D’Arcy, the duo dissecting the details of a recent break-in at the home of billionaire inventor Howard Stark. Set in 1946, “Agent Carter” arrives as the latest small-screen venture from comic book entertainment powerhouse Marvel and sees Atwell reprise her role as supremely capable spy Peggy Carter from both “Captain America” films. ‘Agent Carter’ clip: Peggy Carter meets the original Jarvis

Screen shot of a clip from "Agent Carter." (Marvel)
A new clip from Marvel’s upcoming adventure series “Agent Carter” offers a glimpse of Iron Man’s father Howard Stark, the original butler Jarvis and, of course, Hayley Atwell as the titular heroine Peggy Carter. If you ever thought what was missing from the Marvel universe was a dash of Indiana Jones and a drop of Downton Abbey, ABC’s upcoming series “Agent Carter” might prove a perfect recipe for adventure and humor. The series, set in 1946, sees Atwell reprising her role from “Captain America: The First Avenger.” The clip, released Tuesday, shows Peggy Carter at a harbor seeing Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper) off on a secret mission and accepting a mission of her own — to locate a buyer of a formula for a substance so explosive, “this much would level a city block,” Stark warns. “And I’m not talking […]

Marvel head of television Jeph Loeb might not have been able to shed much light on the future plot lines of Marvel’s two ABC series “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” and “Agent Carter” — the studio really relies on its narrative surprises — but he did reveal some key cast and directors on Marvel TV’s Comic-Con International panel on Friday. Loeb confirmed that Lucy Lawless will join the cast of “S.H.I.E.L.D.” in the show’s second season as a tough, knife-wielding longtime veteran named Isabelle Hartley. She’ll be joined by a young English actor named Nick Blood (yes, it’s his real name) as the mercenary Lance Hunter, known to comics fans as an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s British counterpart, S.T.R.I.K.E. The third new cast member is Reed Diamond, who will play Hydra villain Daniel Whitehall. Additionally, guest star Patton Oswalt appeared in character as […]

If you’re planning to spend any time in downtown San Diego this weekend, keep an eye out for Homer Simpson’s head. That iconic bald pate is expected to take up a noticeable portion of the city’s shoreline in a clever bit of promotion for “The Simpsons,” one of thousands of movies, TV shows, comic books and video game titles vying for attention at the annual pop culture expo that kicks off Thursday. FULL COVERAGE: Comic-Con 2014 Comic-Con International long ago evolved from its modest origins — it began as an intimate gathering in the basement of San Diego’s U.S. Grant Hotel in 1970 — into an important marketing platform for Hollywood, an opportunity for studios and networks to bring an increasingly broad range of movies and series directly to an enthusiastic audience of roughly 130,000 fans amid a frenzied, carnival-like […]

Marvel’s ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ renewed for second season on ABC

Make way for more Marvel in prime time. “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D” will return for a second season, and a new series, “Agent Carter,” starring Hayley Atwell, will join the one-hour adventure on ABC’s schedule, the network announced Thursday. “Agent Carter” will see English actress Atwell reprise her role as Peggy Carter from the “Captain America” films — the show is set one year after the events depicted in “Captain America: The First Avenger” and follows on the heels of a one-shot centered on the character that accompanied the “Iron Man 3″ DVD. The renewal announcement for “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”– which tracks the exploits of Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) and his roster of operatives —  Ming-Na Wen’s Melinda May, Brett Dalton’s Grant Ward, Chloe Bennet’s Skye, Iain De Caestecker’s Leo Fitz and Elizabeth Henstridge’s Jemma Simmons —  arrives just before […]
