Marvel is set to offer fans a first look at Joss Whedon’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron” as part of a new ABC TV documentary airing next month. “Marvel Studios: Assembling a Universe” will feature interviews and behind-the-scenes footage from all the Marvel films dating back to 2008′s hit “Iron Man,” as well as the company’s original One-Shot titles and the ABC series ““Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” The one-hour prime-time special will include new footage from Marvel’s upcoming releases, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” and “Guardians of the Galaxy,” in addition to a sneak peek at the “Avengers” sequel, which is set to open in theaters next year. Whedon’s follow-up to his $1-billion-plus 2012 hit, “The Avengers,” will see the iconic team of heroes gather once more to battle the villainous Ultron (James Spader). It’s unclear how closely the film will […]

J. August Richards loves playing poker, traveling and interacting with a fervent fan base, which is why his new role as cyborg killing machine Deathlok on “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” may fit him perfectly. Any character in a Joss Whedon-related project — though “S.H.I.E.L.D.” was also created by husband-and-wife team Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen-Whedon — could be on thin ice (ask costar Chloe Bennet, whose character Skye was recently gunned down), but Richards may have staying power. Whedonites recognize Richards as vampire/demon hunter Charles Gunn from “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” spinoff series “Angel.” In the premiere episode of “S.H.I.E.L.D.,” Richards introduced Marvel fans to an equally tough guy, Michael Peterson, who is transformed into Deathlok in this week’s episode and must carry out deadly missions, despite them often being against his good nature. The “T.R.A.C.K.S.” episode is garnering good […]

Jaimie Alexander’s fierce Asgardian Lady Sif will make a guest appearance on ABC’s “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Marvel and ABC executives are being tight-lipped about what might bring Thor’s ally to Midgard for a crossover episode, but her appearance on the show’s 15th episode appears to be fortuitously timed with the Feb. 25 DVD and Blu-ray release of “Thor: The Dark World.” Directed by Alan Taylor — who’s next set to step behind the camera to helm a reboot of “The Terminator” starring Emilia Clarke — “Thor: The Dark World” saw Chris Hemsworth’s hammer-wielding god face off against the Dark Elf Malekith to save the Nine Realms from being plunged into eternal night. The 2013 film now ranks behind “The Avengers” and “Iron Man 3″ as the third-highest-grossing release from the studio. It’s grossed more than $205 million at the […]

“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” kicked it up a notch with Tuesday’s episode, “Eye Spy,” which enjoyed a preview screening this past weekend at New York Comic Con. The globe-trotting story focused on a former agent and protege of Clark Gregg’s Phil Coulson, Akela Amador, whose special abilities posed a real challenge for the team, and it gave Brett Dalton more of a chance to shine as Agent Grant Ward. (Click through the gallery above for a behind-the-scenes look at “Eye Spy.”) Back in August, Hero Complex visited the Los Angeles set of the series while the episode was filming, and soon after, chatted with Dalton, a San Jose native and Yale drama school grad, about the show and joining the Marvel universe as the special-ops expert. Hero Complex: How’s the experience been for you, so far, as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent? […]

NEW YORK — At the Javits Center in Manhattan this past weekend, the Frodos and Jokers were easily outnumbered by the Heisenbergs and Khalesis. Reflecting television’s place on top of the pop-culture food chain, the lineup at New York Comic Con was dominated by the small screen, with panels about shows such as “Game of Thrones,” “Sleepy Hollow” and “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” proving a major draw among the estimated 130,000 attendees. Although it began as a more narrowly focused celebration of comic books and anime, like its behemoth West Coast rival, San Diego’s Comic Con International, NYCC is increasingly dominated by pop culture — particularly television. “I definitely have seen a really strong increase in the TV presence over the past couple of years,” said Kim Mueller, content and talent director at ReedPOP, the company that produces the 7-year-old […]

Between comic book news and details about a touring live attraction, Marvel had plenty of information to share with fans at New York Comic Con Saturday. The company’s big push into prime time, ABC’s “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” also managed a moment in the spotlight with Marvel’s head of television, Jeph Loeb, and actors Iain De Caestecker and Elizabeth Henstridge, who play lab geniuses Fitz and Simmons, turning up to preview Tuesday’s episode and talk up the show. (Those who don’t want to know details about the upcoming episode should stop reading now.) This episode introduces a new character — a former protege of Agent Coulson’s (Clark Gregg) named Amador, who’s equipped with a camera in her eye — and opens with an elaborate action sequence on the Stockholm subway, one that was actually filmed in Sweden, just as the […]

Starting Thursday, an estimated 130,000 fans will descend on the cavernous Javits Center on Manhattan’s far west side to attend New York Comic-Con, a four-day confab featuring some 400 panels, screenings and special events. Although it began as a more narrowly focused celebration of comic books, like its behemoth West Coast rival, San Diego’s Comic Con International, NYCC is increasingly dominated by pop culture – especially television. “I definitely have seen a really strong increase in the TV presence over the past couple of years,” said Kim Mueller, content and talent director at ReedPOP, the company that produces the 7-year-old event. “This year I would say we have double the content that we’ve had in the past. We are working with almost every single major network.” PHOTOS: SDCC cosplayers in all their crazy glory Reflecting the increasingly expansive definition of “geek […]

“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” star Ming-Na Wen plays the resolute Melinda May on ABC’s hit new spy series, but the veteran actress said she was a jangle of raw nerves going in to audition for the role. “I got a phone call from my agent, and he said, ‘Hey, you have a meeting with Joss Whedon, want to go in?’” Wen recalled, sitting in her trailer preparing to head to set for a day of shooting on the new show. “I’ve been a huge fan of his work, and I was actually really nervous because I love this world, the Marvel world. I grew up as a geek girl. I remember not being able to memorize these lines to save my life. When I can’t memorize lines that means that my head wasn’t in the game. I was thinking about […]

The cloudless August morning was so warm and tranquil it could have been plucked from the mind of a dreaming pilot. It was a lucky turn for Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division agent Phil Coulson and his team of operatives as they flew a massive Helicarrier to a remote corner of the globe to apprehend an elusive target who’d stolen contraband goods. Clad in his trademark tailored suit, Coulson warned his recruited S.H.I.E.L.D. agents that the mission wasn’t going to be easy, even under the best of circumstances. It was a sentiment he repeated more than a few times, as Clark Gregg replayed the scene for the cameras inside a Culver City soundstage, filming what will be the fourth episode of ABC’s anticipated new series, “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” which premieres Sept. 24.
