Emilia Clarke wasn’t even born when “The Terminator” came out in 1984. Nor, for that matter, was Jai Courtney. Jason Clarke was a 15-year-old high schooler in Australia, a world away from Hollywood but the ideal age to have his mind blown by director James Cameron’s story of a murderous cyborg from the future. As for Arnold Schwarzenegger, well, he was the Terminator — and he warned us from the start that he’d be back. FULL COVERAGE: Summer Movie Sneaks The four lead actors in Paramount Pictures’ summer release “Terminator Genisys” came to the project from vastly different backgrounds. But each signed on knowing they were assuming the mantle of one of the most venerable science-fiction franchises in film history, a series that, like the Terminator himself, has taken a licking and kept on ticking over three decades and four films, […]

“Doctor Who” star Matt Smith is set to do some time traveling of a different order. The English actor is joining the cast of the upcoming “Terminator” reboot, playing a new character with a strong connection to John Connor in the film, set to be directed by Alan Taylor (“Thor: The Dark World”). The new “Terminator” film, from Paramount Pictures, will be the fifth in the long-running franchise but the first in a planned stand-alone trilogy, with “Game of Thrones” star Emilia Clarke cast as Sarah Connor, the iconic heroine brought to the screen in James Cameron’s 1984 sci-fi action flick and 1991 sequel “Terminator 2: Judgment Day.” Written by Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier, the new film also will star Jason Clarke (“Zero Dark Thirty”), Jai Courtney, J.K. Simmons, Dayo Okeniyi and Byung Hun Lee, with original “Terminator” actor […]

Tom Hiddleston had just spent six weeks living inside the melancholy mind-set of a vampire for a new Jim Jarmusch film when he turned up for the first day of shooting on “Thor: The Dark World.” Ready to reprise his role as the treacherous god Loki for the Marvel superhero sequel, which thundered to an $86.1-million opening this weekend, Hiddleston stood inside a prison cell set wearing the character’s green and gold costume and his trademark ebony locks. From behind a plexiglass wall, he glowered and dissembled for director Alan Taylor, but something was amiss. “I did the first take, and Alan was like, ‘Really nice. Wow … I think you can smile if you want to,’” Hiddleston recalled during a recent interview. “I was like, ‘Oh yes! Loki is a showman and he smiles all the time because he’s […]

Playing a Dark Elf of Svartalfheim isn’t as glamorous as it might seem — at least according to Christopher Eccleston, the English actor who stars as the evil Malekith in “Thor: The Dark World.” “The cloak is a pain in the ass,” Eccleston said. The actor was speaking candidly between takes on the London set of the latest Marvel superhero sequel, which took in an impressive $86 million in its North American debut over the weekend. The movie sees Eccleston portray the malevolent Malekith, an ancient enemy of Asgard who longs to plunge the Nine Realms into eternal night using a weapon known as the Aether. To stop him, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor must team with his treacherous brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston), a tenuous alliance that has some surprising results. Eccleston has a lengthy resume filled with respected projects including “Jude,” “Elizabeth,” Danny Boyle’s “Shallow Grave” […]

LONDON — A bone-chilling wind and a fine sheet of mist cascaded off the River Thames, but it wasn’t the bitter blasts of air that sent Chris Hemsworth tumbling to the ground. Late on a November afternoon, the brawny Australian actor threw himself down onto the courtyard of the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich over and over, filming scenes for what would eventually become the epic final battle in Marvel’s “Thor: The Dark World.” The film, due out Nov. 8, sees the God of Thunder facing off against a nemesis called Malekith, part of a race known as the Dark Elves, but actor Christopher Eccleston already had called it quits for the day. That left Thor, dressed in full armor, long red cape billowing out majestically behind him, to press on alone, with Hemsworth gamely absorbing imaginary blows for […]

Natalie Portman’s character is front and center in a new TV spot for “Thor: The Dark World.” Portman’s character, astrophysicist Jane Foster, takes Chris Hemsworth’s Thor to task for not contacting her during his previous Earth visit — defending New York from an alien attack during the events of 2012’s “The Avengers.” “I saw you with the Avengers!” she tells him, accusingly. “Jane, I fought to protect Earth,” Thor responds. “Is that your excuse?” Jane demands. “It’s not terrible…” Jane also comes face-to-face, or rather fist-to-face, with Tom Hiddleston’s duplicitous villain Loki in Asgard. She punches him, saying, “That was for New York.” Loki grins and tells his brother, “I like her.” Like previous trailers, the one-minute TV spot (watch it above) emphasizes an uneasy alliance between Thor and Loki and promises epic action, both on Earth and in other […]

Chris Hemsworth is back in his Asgardian armor in a new movie poster for “Thor: The Dark World.” The poster arrives ahead of the film’s first teaser trailer, which will be released Tuesday. In the poster, Hemsworth’s Thor appears to be in a snowstorm, wielding his hammer Mjölnir to call down lightning. “Thor: The Dark World” is the sequel to 2011’s “Thor,” which chronicled the demigod’s fall from grace, banishment to Earth and rise to redemption. The blockbuster also introduced villainous Loki (Tom Hiddleston), who faced off against Thor and the other Avengers, including Iron Man, the Hulk, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow, in 2012’s “The Avengers.” Loki and Thor reunite for “Thor: The Dark World,” along with returning cast members Natalie Portman (who plays scientist and love interest Jane Foster), Kat Dennings (Foster’s research assistant Darcy Lewis), Stellan […]
