Joe and Anthony Russo are ready to redeploy. The sibling directing duo are set to helm the two-part superhero showdown “The Avengers: Infinity War,” Hero Complex has confirmed. Plot details have yet to be revealed for the two films, set for release in 2018 and 2019, but they are expected to bring together an all-star roster of big-screen heroes (and villains) and mark the culmination of Marvel’s third wave of blockbusters. The Russos are thus shaping up as the next architects of Marvel’s cinematic universe, having directed 2014’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” and already signed on for “Captain America: Civil War,” due next year. Badass Digest first reported news of the brothers boarding “Infinity War.” They’ll take over stewardship of the franchise from Joss Whedon, who directed the original “Avengers” film and its sequel, “Age of Ultron,” opening May 1. If the Russos were originally […]

‘Captain America: Winter Soldier’ inspired by ‘Star Wars,’ ‘French Connection’

“Captain America: The Winter Soldier” arrives in theaters Friday with the promise of bringing to the screen the famous 2005 comic book storyline by writer Ed Brubaker and artist Steve Epting that inspired the name of the Marvel sequel, but star Chris Evans and fraternal directing team Anthony and Joe Russo also looked back to certain cinematic landmarks to help bring a contemporary resonance to the superhero tale. It seems to have worked — critics have widely praised the film in early reviews and Marvel already has announced its plans to bring the Russos back to direct the third “Captain America” film, which takes place months after the events depicted in “Avengers” and opens with Steve Rogers having remained in the employ of international espionage agency S.H.I.E.L.D. and occasionally teaming with Scarlett Johansson’s spy Natasha Romanoff, also known as Black […]

“Captain America: The Winter Soldier” arrives in theaters April 4 with the promise of bringing to the screen the famous 2005 comic book storyline by writer Ed Brubaker and artist Steve Epting that inspired the name of the Marvel sequel. Star Chris Evans and fraternal directing team Anthony and Joe Russo also looked back to certain cinematic landmarks to help bring a contemporary resonance to the superhero tale. Marvel “told us that they wanted to do a ’70s thriller, and we grew up on ’70s thrillers,” Joe Russo said in an interview with Hero Complex last year. “We’ve seen ‘The French Connection’ 50 times, studied it frame by frame.” Although Anthony and Joe Russo are best known to a certain swath of fans for their groundbreaking work on the subversive cult comedies “Community” and “Arrested Development,” they were able to […]

‘Captain America': Chris Evans fights evil, and the present, in ‘Winter Soldier’

Among the massive metal containers that lined the scorched asphalt of a Carson shipping yard, directors Joe and Anthony Russo sheltered beneath a portable canopy while Captain America and the Falcon battled one seriously amped-up adversary in the relentless July heat. The trio punched, ducked and dodged blows until the forthright hero, star-spangled shield in hand, took a hit and tumbled over a thin metal rail, falling several stories to the ground. The filmmakers called “Cut,” actor Anthony Mackie called for an umbrella, and stunt man Sam Hargrave stood up from the mats that helped him land safely, mopping sweat from his brow as he prepared to do the scene once more. He was aiming for a slightly different trajectory on the next descent, hoping that when audiences watched the epic fight that concludes “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” the […]
