The first trailer for Disney’s live-action take on Cinderella is out, and from the looks of it, the film adheres closely to the animated classic, right down to the cartoon-y mice. “Cinderella,” directed by Kenneth Branagh from a screenplay penned by Aline Brosh McKenna and Chris Weitz, sees “Downton Abbey” actress Lily James wearing the Disney princess’ iconic glass slippers. “Game of Thrones” alumnus Richard Madden portrays her prince, Helena Bonham Carter plays her fairy godmother, and Cinderella’s trio of tormentors include Cate Blanchett as the stepmother and Holliday Grainger and Sophie McShera as the wicked stepsisters. In “How to Train Your Dragon 2,” the young Viking Hiccup is reunited with an important figure from his past — Valka, a character voiced by Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett. “I had her in mind when I wrote the character,” said writer-director Dean DeBlois. “I needed to channel a woman who would be both rich in that she’s really commanding and has a really authoritative presence but also has a lot of stinging regret, so there’s a vulnerability to her as well.” Speaking as a special guest at the fifth annual Hero Complex Film Festival on May 31, DeBlois was joined on stage for a Q&A about the new animated sequel by stars Jay Baruchel and America Ferrera, who voice Hiccup and his feisty confidante Astrid, respectively, following an early screening of the film at the TCL Chinese 6 Theaters. The theatrical release of “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” is only a week away, but for those Peter Jackson fans who can’t stand the wait, here’s a Hero Complex exclusive sneak peek at a scene from the film. The clip, which runs 1 minute and 11 seconds, foreshadows the events of “The Lord of the Rings,” set 60 years after “The Hobbit,” and features Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Cate Blanchett as Galadriel, Hugo Weaving as Elrond and Christopher Lee as Saruman sitting in council in the Elven city of Rivendell. Against a gorgeous backdrop of a waterfall at sunset, the scene reveals Gandalf’s motivation in helping Thorin Oakenshield and his company of dwarfs reclaim their home kingdom from the dragon Smaug.
