Comic-Con 2014: Charity events from CBLDF, Hero Initiative, more

Many of the 125,000-plus expected for this year’s Comic-Con International in San Diego will arrive with lists of things they want to get — comics, toys, T-shirts, a seat in Hall H (good luck, brave souls) — but many also will give to charitable causes. Whether it’s the 1st Amendment, comics creators in need, or life itself, the pop-culture fan gathering offers plenty of opportunities to help support social and health initiatives. After exploring Comic-Con’s charitable side in a story last year, Hero Complex decided to put together a day-by-day listing of charity-related events ahead of this year’s convention. Comic-Con 2013: We Can Be Heroes, CBLDF and the con’s charitable side

The car has seven seats — each with an emblem representing a hero: Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Green Lantern, Cyborg and the Flash. But it isn’t for the Justice League: It’s for the eventual winner of a charity auction. As part of its We Can Be Heroes fundraising campaign to fight famine in the Horn of Africa, DC Entertainment unveiled the eighth and final Justice League-themed car with art designed by superstar artist and DC Comics co-publisher Jim Lee, who finished the super-custom Kia Sorento’s look live during a news conference at the Comic-Con Interactive Zone at Petco Park just before the start of the pop-culture expo on Wednesday. ‘Nelson’: A ‘fever dream’ graphic novel unites 54 U.K. creators

It began as a “fever dream” of an idea on Twitter — how special would it be to bring together an all-star roster of U.K. comics creators and let them tell a single life story by taking turns at their art tables and then handing off the narrative like a baton in a relay race? The result is “Nelson,” now on sale, a 250-page experimental graphic novel that also functions as an exercise in charity with 100% of profits going to Shelter, a group dedicated to housing issues and the homelessness crisis in Britain. “Nelson,” from U.K. comics publisher Blank Slate, chronicles the life of protagonist Nel Baker over 43 years. Each contributor portrayed a single event in Nel’s life over successive years, and the result is a cohesive arc that is also beautifully fractured.
