In the spirit of Halloween, Hero Complex reached out to select filmmakers to solicit their fondest memories of classic horror. Below, Neil Marshall — who recently directed the pilot episode of NBC’s new series “Constantine,” and who produced the ghost story “Soulmate,” which arrived on DVD this week — discusses his respect and admiration for Ridley Scott’s “Alien.” He also addresses its influence on his features, including the acclaimed thriller “The Descent,” a superlative horror story that sees a strong heroine fighting monsters in a confined setting. Few horror movies have had such a profound effect on me as Ridley Scott’s 1979 masterpiece, “Alien.” Few movies of any kind have had as much of an impact and influence on the movies I make. I was too young to catch it at the cinema when it was first released, but my […]

Matt Ryan had just finished a run of “Henry V” in London’s West End, playing Fluellen to Jude Law’s commanding prince, when he flew to America earlier this year to meet with the producers of NBC’s “Constantine.” Not three weeks later, he found himself wearing John Constantine’s signature trench coat, preparing to battle supernatural forces in the starring role in the new series, adapted from the long-running DC series “Hellblazer,” set to premiere Oct. 24. “It was a bit of a whirlwind actually,” the Welsh actor said during a recent interview, speaking by phone from “Constantine’s” Atlanta set, where he was shooting the sixth episode of the show, created by executive producers Daniel Cerone (“Dexter”) and David S. Goyer. But even in these early days, he seems to have found his footing with the character, last seen on screen in […]

Is director Neil Marshall pleased to see John Constantine reborn for the small screen, personal demons and English accent intact? In a word, yes. “I’m very happy that it’s gone back to its roots, having a British guy with the blond hair and a few nasty habits. That’s how it should be,” Marshall said recently over coffee in a downtown Los Angeles eatery. It’s true that the supernatural investigator played by Matt Ryan on NBC’s new series “Constantine” bears a much stronger resemblance to the paranormal detective of the “Hellblazer” comics than did Keanu Reeves in the 2005 big-screen horror adventure of the same name. Perhaps a bit of credit for that transformation goes to Marshall, who directed the pilot for the show, created by executive producers Daniel Cerone (“Dexter”) and David S. Goyer (“The Dark Knight” film trilogy). But […]

Director Neil Marshall has some encouraging news for fans of the character John Constantine, who will be at the center of his own new NBC series once “Constantine” premieres Friday. ” ‘Constantine’ doesn’t feel necessarily like a comic book adaptation — I know it is — but we’re playing it for scares,” said Marshall, who was behind the camera for the pilot episode. “We’re playing it nice and dark.” Created by executive producers Daniel Cerone (“Dexter”) and David S. Goyer (“The Dark Knight” film trilogy), “Constantine” is based on DC Comics’ antihero, a chain-smoking con man and occult detective from Liverpool, known for his cynicism and foul-mouthed snark. Constantine served as the lead character in the “Hellblazer” series, though he made his comics debut in a 1985 issue of “Swamp Thing.” More recently, he’s the star of his own New […]

“Constantine” premieres on NBC on Oct. 24, and Hero Complex readers can get a first look at a new teaser video as well as a poster featuring John Constantine that will be distributed to comics retailers to help promote the new series. The new poster, from artist Gene Ha, features British actor Matt Ryan donning the DC character’s trademark trench coat for the show, based on DC Comics’ antihero John Constantine, a chain-smoking con man and occult detective from Liverpool, known for his cynicism and foul-mouthed snark. Constantine, who served as the lead character in the “Hellblazer” series, made his comics debut in a 1985 issue of “Swamp Thing.” More recently, he’s the star of his own New 52 title, “Constantine,” and a major player in “Justice League Dark.” The new teaser video (above) hints at Constantine’s dark past, including […]

If Hollywood seemed a tad quieter than normal this past weekend, there was a good reason: Like moths to a porch light — or Batman to the Bat Signal — film and television creators, executives and stars were drawn en masse to downtown San Diego in an effort to drum up excitement for their upcoming wares at the annual Comic-Con International pop-culture expo. The unveiling of the first footage from the highly anticipated superhero mash-up “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and an extended early glimpse at “The Avengers: Age of Ultron” may have sent the biggest reverberations through the four-day film, television, video-game and comic-book fest. But there was plenty of other news to stir the excitement of the 130,000 or so convention-goers who descended upon the San Diego Convention Center, many decked out in costume, to watch exclusive […]

While “Arrow” and “The Flash” are busy expanding the depiction of the DC Universe over on the CW, “Constantine” is coming to NBC. And according to executive producer David S. Goyer, they “have access to the occult corner of the DC universe.” The series stars Matt Ryan as John Constantine, an exorcist who carries the guilt of what happened to a friend’s daughter when her exorcism went horribly wrong. While a very familiar DC hero mask makes a cameo appearance in the pilot episode, which screened during the show’s panel on Saturday afternoon, Goyer cautioned that the series wouldn’t become a “guest star of the week” type of series. That said, Goyer said that the series wouldn’t shy away from its comic book roots. “There are over 300 issues of ‘Hellblazer,'” Goyer said. “Some of the best writers in the […]

“Gotham” has been teasing fans with casting and posters and trailers, but now some will finally get to see a world premiere of how all of that dark imagery jells — at the one place that could possibly make or break the show: Comic-Con International. The chronicle of Det. James Gordon and a young Bruce Wayne set to air on Fox isn’t the only DC Comics-based show that will invade San Diego. A complete pilot for the CW’s “The Flash,” a glimpse at Season 3 of its network ally “Arrow” and footage from NBC’s “Constantine” will all be presented by Warner Bros. Television and DC Entertainment on Saturday, July 26, during the pop-culture exposition. Cast members and producers from all four shows will make appearances throughout the night following the screenings. The three-hour event will bring together the shows for […]
