Dave Filoni will be attending all four days of Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim, but that’s not because he has nothing to do. Far from it. The co-creator, supervising director and executive producer of “Star Wars Rebels” is still in the midst of creating that show’s second season. But the light is visible at the end of the tunnel. “The finale scripts just came in, so I’ve been planning how the end of it is going to go,” Filoni said in a recent phone conversation. “But it’s always working on the whole thing at one time, from beginning to end. What’s nice is that you can see the whole thing now and make plans on episodes still in production to make things more worthwhile.” Star Wars Celebration: Trailer unveiled | Watch the live stream | Fans gather | Preview Production […]

“Star Wars: The Clone Wars: The Lost Missions” is out on home video Tuesday, but Hero Complex readers can get an exclusive sneak peek at a clip from the bonus features. “The Clone Wars,” set in the years between “Star Wars: Episode II — Attack of the Clones” and “Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith,” was a fan-favorite series and widely praised for its sophistication and scope. After five seasons on Cartoon Network, “The Clone Wars” was canceled last year without a satisfactory conclusion after Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm, ultimately making way for the new Disney XD series “Star Wars Rebels,” which takes place in the time between “Revenge of the Sith” and “Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope.” Thirteen “Clone Wars” episodes that never made it to air before the show was canceled were […]

“Star Wars Rebels: Spark of Rebellion,” the one-hour animated film that launched the new Disney XD series, is coming to ABC — with a special appearance from a certain well-known Dark Lord of the Sith. Iconic villain Darth Vader, once again voiced by actor James Earl Jones, will make a cameo in the extended version of the movie, which is set to air Oct. 26 on ABC. “Spark of Rebellion” premiered Oct. 3 on Disney Channel, though “Star Wars Rebels” is set for a regular run on Disney XD. “We wanted to do something special for the ABC broadcast,” “Rebels” executive producer Dave Filoni said in a statement. “We’ve added a scene which gives audiences insight into [the show’s villain] the Inquisitor and includes a cameo by Darth Vader.” Set in the time period just before the original 1977 “Star […]

The sun was shining brightly on one recent afternoon at Skywalker Ranch, George Lucas’ lush yet cozy retreat in Marin County. But Kilian Plunkett, art director for the new animated series “Star Wars Rebels,” was not outside enjoying a stroll through Lucas’ vineyard or taking a dip in the waters of Lake Ewok. He was inside, in the dim light of the Lucasfilm archive, holding a bit of cinematic history in his hands. At just 18×41 centimeters, artist Ralph McQuarrie’s gouache concept paintings for the original “Star Wars” trilogy are smaller than expected, but then again, so is the Mona Lisa. Physical size bears no relation to the impact these paintings have on pop culture. “I always assumed these things were giant movie poster size,” Plunkett said as he pointed out the finer details of McQuarrie’s style. For “Star Wars” […]

“Star Wars Rebels” has its premiere date. The new show set in the galaxy far, far away will arrive via a one-hour animated movie on Oct. 3. “Star Wars Rebels: Spark of Rebellion” will premiere that day on Disney Channel, with the “Rebels” series launching 10 days later on Oct. 13 on Disney XD, the studio announced Tuesday. Set about five years before the beginning of “Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope,” the new animated series follows the adventures of a group of heroes desperately trying to combat the all-consuming might of the Empire, the fascistic government risen from the ashes of the Old Republic in “Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.” Although the story will recount the formation of the Rebel Alliance, the group that Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia and Han Solo would eventually lead to […]

Excited to see “Star Wars Rebels”? Tonight, you can watch the first seven minutes of the first episode online. Set about five years before the beginning of “Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope,” the new animated series follows the adventures of a group of heroes desperately trying to combat the all-consuming might of the Empire, the fascistic government arisen from the ashes of the Old Republic in “Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.” Although the story will recount the formation of the Rebel Alliance, the group that Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia and Han Solo would eventually lead to defeat the evil Empire, at the outset of the show the organization is little more than a ragtag band of aliens and a Jedi Knight in hiding, Kanan (voiced by Freddie Prinze Jr.), who engage in minor skirmishes with Imperial […]

“Star Wars” fans got their first look at the new “Star Wars Rebels” series on Thursday at Comic-Con with a screening of the first episode, which isn’t due to premiere on the Disney Channel until October. While the animation wasn’t quite finished, and therefore not quite ready for review, it did evoke the look and feel of “Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.” The exclusive clip above was screened at the panel and gave fans a feel for the lighthearted, more adventurous feel of the new series. At the show’s panel discussion beforehand, executive producers Dave Filoni and Simon Kinberg appeared before fans for the first time with the show’s cast, which includes Freddie Prinze Jr., Steve Blum, Vanessa Marshall, Taylor Gray and Tiya Sircar. The new series takes place in the “Star Wars” timeline between “Revenge of the […]

As the fall premiere of “Star Wars Rebels” grows ever closer, we’re getting more familiar with the characters created to bring us into this new era of the space saga. On the bad guy side, images of the Inquisitor has been available for a long time, but now we’re getting our first look at his right-hand man, Agent Kallus, the so-called “Rebel hunter.” And the actor selected to voice him, David Oyelowo. Oyelowo’s acting career is red-hot right now. In the last couple of years, he’s appeared in “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” “Lincoln,” “Lee Daniels’ The Butler” and has upcoming roles in Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar” and will play Martin Luther King Jr. in “Selma.” Now he’s voicing the evil agent of the Empire, working for the Imperial Security Bureau. The way “Rebels” executive producer Dave Filoni describes […]

Just in time for “Star Wars” day, the new trailer for the animated series “Star Wars Rebels” has arrived — and the clip instantly recalls the original trilogy with a very familiar sounding Imperial March. “Star Wars Rebels” is set about five years before the beginning of “Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope,” and follows the adventures of a group of heroes desperately trying to combat the all-consuming might of the Empire, the fascistic government arisen from the ashes of the Old Republic in “Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.” The series, overseen by supervising director and executive producer Dave Filoni, whose work on “The Clone Wars” has made him well known in “Star Wars” fan circles, will premiere on the Disney Channel in the fall before it shifts to Disney XD for the rest of the […]

“Star Wars” fans let out a collective howl of anguish last year when it was announced that one of the casualties of Disney’s purchase of Lucasfilm was the animated series “Star Wars: The Clone Wars.” The fan-favorite series was canceled without a satisfactory conclusion, yanked from the schedule of Cartoon Network, where it had aired since 2008. That ultimately made way for a new series, “Star Wars Rebels,” set to premiere on the Disney Channel before moving to Disney XD. So, when word came that the final 13 episodes of the show’s sixth season would become available to fans on Netflix, the news was met with good cheer. As of Friday, viewers can check out “The Lost Missions,” which will join the previous five seasons on the streaming video service, including some director’s cuts of those earlier episodes. “The Lost […]
