“Star Wars” fans got their first look at the new “Star Wars Rebels” series on Thursday at Comic-Con with a screening of the first episode, which isn’t due to premiere on the Disney Channel until October. While the animation wasn’t quite finished, and therefore not quite ready for review, it did evoke the look and feel of “Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.” The exclusive clip above was screened at the panel and gave fans a feel for the lighthearted, more adventurous feel of the new series. At the show’s panel discussion beforehand, executive producers Dave Filoni and Simon Kinberg appeared before fans for the first time with the show’s cast, which includes Freddie Prinze Jr., Steve Blum, Vanessa Marshall, Taylor Gray and Tiya Sircar. The new series takes place in the “Star Wars” timeline between “Revenge of the […]

As the fall premiere of “Star Wars Rebels” grows ever closer, we’re getting more familiar with the characters created to bring us into this new era of the space saga. On the bad guy side, images of the Inquisitor has been available for a long time, but now we’re getting our first look at his right-hand man, Agent Kallus, the so-called “Rebel hunter.” And the actor selected to voice him, David Oyelowo. Oyelowo’s acting career is red-hot right now. In the last couple of years, he’s appeared in “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” “Lincoln,” “Lee Daniels’ The Butler” and has upcoming roles in Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar” and will play Martin Luther King Jr. in “Selma.” Now he’s voicing the evil agent of the Empire, working for the Imperial Security Bureau. The way “Rebels” executive producer Dave Filoni describes […]

Just in time for “Star Wars” day, the new trailer for the animated series “Star Wars Rebels” has arrived — and the clip instantly recalls the original trilogy with a very familiar sounding Imperial March. “Star Wars Rebels” is set about five years before the beginning of “Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope,” and follows the adventures of a group of heroes desperately trying to combat the all-consuming might of the Empire, the fascistic government arisen from the ashes of the Old Republic in “Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.” The series, overseen by supervising director and executive producer Dave Filoni, whose work on “The Clone Wars” has made him well known in “Star Wars” fan circles, will premiere on the Disney Channel in the fall before it shifts to Disney XD for the rest of the […]

“Star Wars” fans let out a collective howl of anguish last year when it was announced that one of the casualties of Disney’s purchase of Lucasfilm was the animated series “Star Wars: The Clone Wars.” The fan-favorite series was canceled without a satisfactory conclusion, yanked from the schedule of Cartoon Network, where it had aired since 2008. That ultimately made way for a new series, “Star Wars Rebels,” set to premiere on the Disney Channel before moving to Disney XD. So, when word came that the final 13 episodes of the show’s sixth season would become available to fans on Netflix, the news was met with good cheer. As of Friday, viewers can check out “The Lost Missions,” which will join the previous five seasons on the streaming video service, including some director’s cuts of those earlier episodes. “The Lost […]

The roll out for the upcoming animated series “Star Wars Rebels” has been ramping up, and two new teasers released Monday morning showcase new footage for the show. Set 14 years after “Revenge of the Sith” and four years prior to the events of “Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope,” “Star Wars Rebels” will center on a core group of characters — with the Inquisitor serving as a major new villain tasked by Darth Vader with tracking down the remaining Jedi Knights. One of those former Jedi is Kanan (voiced by Freddie Prinze Jr.) — the character, pictured in the gallery above, has been described as a “cowboy Jedi” who has gone into hiding and no longer uses his light saber for fear of being discovered, though, as the series rolls out, Kanan just might find his way […]

Meet Chopper, the new droid set for a starring turn on Disney XD’s upcoming animated series “Star Wars Rebels.” Also known as a C1-10P, Chopper, described as a cranky astromech droid who helps staff the starship Ghost, will be among the roster of characters featured in the new show, which is set to arrive in the fall as the anticipated follow-up to “Star Wars: The Clone Wars.” That series, which aired on Cartoon Network, was canceled last year. Set 14 years after “Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith” and four years prior to the events of “Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope,” “Star Wars Rebels” will center on a core group of characters — with the Inquisitor serving as a major villain tasked by Darth Vader to track down the final remaining Jedi Knights. “‘Rebels’ […]
