Elizabeth Olsen is doing more than bringing the Marvel Comics character Scarlet Witch to the big screen in Friday’s tentpole film “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” She’s also doubling the number of women on the Avengers roster. “It’s really cool, and I don’t take it for granted,” said Olsen, 26, a self-professed fan of the comic book film franchise. Previously, Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff, a.k.a. Black Widow, was the sole female member of the muscle-bound team of super-studs, comprising Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man, Chris Evans’ Captain America, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk and Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye. With four Marvel movies under her utility belt and a fifth (“Captain America: Civil War”) slated to begin filming next week, Johansson, 30, is a veteran of the flourishing Marvel Cinematic Universe. And she’s eager to welcome more women to the franchise. “For […]

Last summer, Elizabeth Olsen starred opposite Aaron Taylor-Johnson in Gareth Edwards’ big-budget reboot of “Godzilla.” On Friday, the duo is back on screen once more, playing twins Wanda and Pietro Maximoff in Joss Whedon’s highly anticipated Marvel sequel, “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” Olsen, previously known for her acclaimed turns in such indie films as “Martha Marcy May Marlene” and “Kill Your Darlings,” said she’s enjoyed helping the sequel move in a somewhat stranger direction. “I think she allows the Avengers universe to become a little more supernatural, which I think is a cool access rather than just having Asgard as their access to something supernatural,” Olsen said. Hero Complex caught up with the actress on the “Ultron” set in London to discuss her relationship with Scarlet Witch, working with Whedon and her rapport with Taylor-Johnson. Were you familiar with Scarlet Witch […]

A new featurette for Marvel’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron” offers a closer look at newcomers Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. The video, which Marvel released Monday, showcases the formidable sister-and-brother team Wanda and Pietro Maximoff, portrayed on the big screen by Elizabeth Olsen and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and their superpowers and contrasting personalities. “Quicksilver is very fast,” director Joss Whedon says in the video (watch it above). “As fast or almost as fast as a bullet.” He’s also quick-tempered, Taylor-Johnson notes. Meanwhile, Scarlet Witch is “grounded and thoughtful,” Olsen explains. As for her powers, they seem to diverge somewhat from her comic-book ability to alter reality. “She’s got telekinesis, she can move things, and she can get inside your head so that all your worst fears or doubts come to the fore,” Whedon says in the video. And judging from the featurette […]

“Avengers: Age of Ultron” ranks as one of the most hotly anticipated releases of 2015 — and now, it’s become a little bit clearer what fans will see when the movie opens next May. Check out the official plot synopsis released this week by Marvel: “When Tony Stark tries to jumpstart a dormant peacekeeping program, things go awry and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye, are put to the ultimate test as the fate of the planet hangs in the balance. As the villainous Ultron emerges, it is up to The Avengers to stop him from enacting his terrible plans, and soon uneasy alliances and unexpected action pave the way for an epic and unique global adventure.” Joss Whedon’s follow-up to his $1-billion-plus 2012 hit, “The Avengers,” will reunite the star-studded cast of […]

A new TV spot for this summer’s coming monster blockbuster “Godzilla” debuted Wednesday, spotlighting epic scenes of destruction presumably caused by the King of All Monsters. The clip comes on the heels of an earlier spot released Tuesday that showcases explosive action scenes and concludes with an image of Godzilla himself. “Godzilla” is directed by Gareth Edwards, whose ambitious independent film “Monsters” garnered critical praise for its mash-up of big visual effects and small art-house atmosphere in 2010. In “Monsters,” Edwards turned heads with his use of sound and character emotion to build an atmosphere of suspense despite a limited budget, and if the early footage from the film is any indication, he seems to use similar tactics in “Godzilla.” The movie’s ensemble cast includes Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen and Bryan Cranston, and last year at Comic-Con International in San […]

The Avengers are assembling in Italy. Filming is underway in Europe on “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” and new photos from the production showcase Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch and Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Quicksilver, as well as Jeremy Renner back in costume as Hawkeye. Also pictured is writer-director Joss Whedon. (Click through the gallery above for a look at the production.) Whedon’s follow-up to his $1-billion-plus 2012 hit, “The Avengers,” will see the iconic team of heroes gather once more to battle the villainous Ultron (James Spader). It’s unclear how closely the film will tie to the “Age of Ultron” story in Marvel Comics, or whether Ant-Man (the protagonist in another upcoming Marvel film, directed by Edgar Wright) will be part of the film. In the comics, Ultron is an insane, sentient robot that tries to destroy its creator, Dr. Henry […]
