‘The Strain’: Kevin Durand channels his inner Viking warrior for Fet

There are few things that will bond a cast of actors more closely than two consecutive weeks of filming at night in close confines during a polar vortex event in Toronto, according to actor Kevin Durand, who plays the towering exterminator Vasiliy Fet in “The Strain,” FX’s hit series adapted from the novels by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan. But the experience of shooting the eighth episode, “Creatures of the Night” — which sees the show’s ensemble of heroes fending off hordes of attacking vampires from inside a Brooklyn convenience store — didn’t just help him forge lasting connections among the actors, Durand said. It also allowed him to channel his inner action hero. “I love getting physical with characters,” Duran said in an interview earlier this year on the Toronto set of the show. “With this guy, there’s […]

‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’: Clark Gregg, Chloe Bennet, more talk Season 2

“It’s all connected.” That was the familiar refrain Tuesday night from Marvel’s “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” producers and cast after the ABC series’ Season 2 premiere aired. (And, if you’ve yet to see the new episode, consider pausing here and coming back after you’ve watched. Spoilers ahead.) Those words were clearly true from the new season’s get-go, as it started with a taste of the 1940s-set upcoming series “Agent Carter,” starring Hayley Atwell, with a strange and powerful obelisk her team boxed up back then driving the quick-paced, twisting-and-turning action for Agent Coulson’s (Clark Gregg) present-day S.H.I.E.L.D. team. Season 2 picks up with S.H.I.E.L.D. still in shambles from the disastrous double-agents revelation of HYDRA and the destruction seen in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” that changed the course of the show. HYDRA is still active, there’s that obelisk, the mystery of […]

‘Gotham’: Penguin actor Robin Lord Taylor cites Tim Burton influence

Among the many villains in the new Fox series “Gotham,” actor Robin Lord Taylor’s Oswald Cobblepot might stand out as one of the more unhinged personalities Det. James Gordon (Ben McKenzie) encounters as he finds his feet on a new beat in the corrupt city. One pointed scene in the premiere episode, which arrives Monday night, plays up Cobblepot’s rather robust enthusiasm for enhanced interrogation methods in the service of ruthless crime boss Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith). But Oswald isn’t just some deranged lunatic, the actor points out — as “Gotham” unfolds, he promises, viewers will learn more about what motivates the character, and possibly even find some ways to sympathize with him. “The MO of the show,” he said, is “taking the fantastic and making it real.” In an interview with Hero Complex late last week, Taylor, whose […]

‘Agents of S.H.I.E.LD.’: Watch Lucy Lawless in season premiere [video]

ABC’s “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D” returns for its second season Tuesday, and Marvel on Friday released a new clip from the premiere episode, featuring Lucy Lawless in her new role as Isabelle Hartley, a seasoned S.H.I.E.L.D. veteran helping to rebuild the organization after its spectacular destruction — a key point in Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” that directly impacted the ongoing narrative of the show. Lawless, beloved by fans for her turns in such series as “Xena: Warrior Princess” and “Battlestar Galactica,” is one of several new actors joining the show’s ensemble in its second season. Watch the new clip below. Reed Diamond, Nick Blood, Henry Simmons and Kyle MacLachlan will each play a role in “S.H.I.E.L.D.’s” upcoming run of episodes, as will Adrianne Palicki, who will be joining the cast as Bobbi Morse, otherwise known as Mockingbird. Palicki’s previous television […]

‘The Strain’: Richard Sammel relishes evil role as Thomas Eichhorst

It takes a certain mind-set to want to bring about the end of the world. For Richard Sammel, the German actor who plays emissary of evil Thomas Eichhorst in FX’s apocalyptic series “The Strain,” a relentlessly positive attitude and a misplaced sense of self-assurance are key. “Guillermo gave me a magic word,” Sammel said recently, referring to “Strain” co-creator Guillermo del Toro. “He said, ‘Richard, for every strong character, there is a cue word, and for Eichhorst, it’s, ‘Yes!’ I couldn’t do anything with it for quite a bit, but… at a certain point it just opened. Yes! He’s hubristic, egocentric, narcissistic. It’s the vampire version of Obama’s ‘Yes, we can!’ Yes, I can. Yes, I do the right thing.” Sammel’s wicked charisma and gleeful zeal have helped transform a character that easily could have tipped into sinister parody — […]

‘Gotham’: Ben McKenzie talks ‘fish out of water’ Jim Gordon [video]

The Batman prequel series “Gotham” arrives on Fox as one of the fall’s most anticipated new shows — and Hero Complex readers can exclusively check out a new vignette featuring star Ben McKenzie discussing his starring turn as Det. James Gordon. “At the start of the series, James is more or less straight out of the military, has not been in Gotham in a decade or more,” McKenzie says in the new featurette. “He left when he was a kid, he’s a little bit of a fish out of water, he doesn’t exactly know what’s going on in Gotham and he’s figuring it out moment to moment.” Hear what else McKenzie had to say by watching the video below. Based on the origins of the Caped Crusader’s longtime ally and friend, Commissioner James Gordon, “Gotham,” which premieres Sept. 22, is […]

‘Arrow’ Season 3 trailer spotlights Oliver and Felicity, Brandon Routh

The new trailer for Season 3 of “Arrow” has arrived, and the 90-second clip teases the possibility of real romance between Stephen Amell’s Oliver Queen and Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards), with the two planning a dinner date during a high-speed chase. Watch the trailer below. At Comic-Con International in July, “Arrow” executive producer Andrew Kreisberg promised that the upcoming run of episodes, which kicks off Oct. 8, will reveal more about Felicity’s back story and her years at MIT in an installment titled “Oracle.” (Oracle, of course, is the secret identity of Barbara Gordon, daughter of Gotham City Police Commissioner James Gordon, who became an information broker and computer expert after she was made a paraplegic by the Joker’s bullet — Kreisberg definitely seemed to hint that she could make an appearance on “Arrow” this season). Pointing out that third […]

‘Doctor Who’: Samuel Anderson begins his journey with the Doctor

Samuel Anderson found out he’d landed a gig on “Doctor Who” the day after Thanksgiving last year. He was hanging out with friends, listening to loud music and generally relaxing when his agent called. He took the call alone on the balcony and found out he was going to play Danny Pink. “I went back inside and told my friends ‘Bloody hell, I just got “Doctor Who,”‘” Anderson said during a phone call from England the day before his first episode, “Into the Dalek” was set to debut. “Just then my phone rang again. It was my agent again, who said, ‘Don’t tell anyone.'” Lucky for Anderson, that momentary slip didn’t hurt him. “My friends are too cool for spoilers,” he said. Anderson wasn’t in the first episode of the new season, “Deep Breath,” but that doesn’t mean his character, […]

Marvel has released the first image of Lucy Lawless as Isabelle Hartley, the new character she’ll play on the second season of ABC’s “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Hartley is a seasoned S.H.I.E.L.D. veteran helping to rebuild the organization after its spectacular destruction — a key point in Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” that directly impacted the ongoing narrative of the show and the lives of Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) and his roster of operatives: Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen), Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), Skye (Chloe Bennet), Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge).
