Zack Snyder: ‘Man of Steel’ sequel explodes Superman, Batman universes

The untitled “Man of Steel” sequel hasn’t yet gone into production, and it’s already the most controversial movie in fandom. Chalk that up to director Zack Snyder’s somewhat unconventional casting choices. First, comics stalwarts expressed surprise and skepticism in August with the revelation that Ben Affleck would inherit the cape and cowl from actor Christian Bale, taking on the role of Batman opposite Henry Cavill’s Superman in Snyder’s much-anticipated superhero sequel, the follow-up to his 2013 blockbuster that grossed more than $668 million at the worldwide box office. Then came the announcement that Israeli actress Gal Gadot, best known for her work in the “Fast & Furious” films, would play Diana Prince/Wonder Woman in the movie, and the uproar started anew. Just last month, fresh fandemonium was heaped upon the movie with the announcement that boyish “Social Network” star Jesse […]

HenryBen
Fans eager to see Superman and Batman together on the big screen are going to have to wait a little longer. Warner Bros. has pushed the release of Zack Snyder’s untitled sequel to “Man of Steel” from July 17, 2015, to May 6, 2016. The film will team Henry Cavill as Superman with Ben Affleck as Batman, with Israeli actress Gal Gadot appearing in the film as Wonder Woman. The project was originally announced last year at San Diego’s Comic-Con International. A release issued by the studio said the move will allow “the filmmakers time to realize fully their vision, given the complex visual nature of the story.” The “Man of Steel” sequel goes into production later this year, and is set to film in Michigan. Even in its nascent stages, the film has been the subject of some controversy. […]

2013 was a superb year for fans of genre entertainment. Major comic book heroes celebrated milestone anniversaries, as did “Doctor Who.” “The Walking Dead” and “Game of Thrones” continued to demonstrate that fantastic tales, both grim and transporting, can make for compelling, compulsory viewing. Dragons, female warriors and Tom Hiddleston stormed the multiplex in blockbuster fashion, while next-generation gaming consoles arrived, just in time for Christmas. There was plenty of big news about 2015 projects as well — namely, that J.J. Abrams will direct the first live-action “Star Wars” film since 2005, and that Ben Affleck will take over the role of Batman from Gotham City’s previous Caped Crusader, Christian Bale. Following are the Hero Complex picks for some of the most memorable moments in film, TV, comic books and games, in no particular order. Feel free to share your […]

Yesterday’s casting announcement that Israeli model and actress Gal Gadot will portray Wonder Woman in the upcoming “Man of Steel” sequel drew a mixed reaction from the comics world. Gadot, best known for her appearances in three “Fast & Furious” films, competed in the 2004 Miss Universe pageant as Miss Israel. She also spent two years in the Israeli army. Gadot joins the previously announced cast of Zack Snyder’s Batman/Superman movie, acting opposite Henry Cavill as Superman and Ben Affleck as Batman — a casting decision that also drew considerable ire from DC Universe fans. Snyder praised Gadot as an “amazing” actress who possesses “that magical quality that makes her perfect for the role.” But some in the world of comics, including “The Adventures of Superhero Girl” author Faith Erin Hicks, weren’t so sure, criticizing Warner Bros. for making Wonder […]
