‘Green Lantern’: Geoffrey Rush said his alien has…torso appeal?
Why did Oscar-winning actor Geoffrey Rush sign on to portray Tomar Re, the wise alien in “Green Lantern” who looks a bit like a reptilian chicken? “When the role came up they asked if I was interested and they told me about him but I wasn’t sure so I told them to send the artwork with the script,” said Rush, who turns 60 in July. “I saw the artwork and I liked it. I identified with the torso.” Um, huh? “Yes, I identified with the torso, the look of him,” Rush said with a chuckle. “That was enough at this point because I have some expertise in this. I felt experienced enough after doing an owl in ‘Legend of the Guardians‘ and a Koala in ‘Magic Pudding‘ back in Australia and a pelican in ‘Finding Nemo‘ to make the call. ...

‘Pirates of the Caribbean’: The filmmaking quest to find the Fountain of Youth
[SPOILER ALERT: This story discusses scenes toward the end of "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides"] The characters in “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” weren’t the only ones struggling to find the Fountain of Youth — the filmmaking team behind the adventure film also learned that the mystical site is an elusive goal. “Deciding what the fountain would look like, that was a long, difficult process, and it ended up being one of the toughest decisions we had,” director Rob Marshall said. “My production designer, John Myhre, who has worked with me on every movie I’ve done and won Oscars for two of them, John DeLuca, the executive producer, who is like my right arm, we all sat down and looked at 60 or more ideas for the Fountain of Youth. It was really important to us. We knew the whole movie ...

‘Pirates of the Caribbean’: Geoffrey Rush as the Barbra Streisand of buccaneers?
Geoffrey Rush has been aboard the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise from the start so of course he watched with intense interest as Disney and producer Jerry Bruckheimer looked to replace director Gore Verbinski, who abandoned ship (so to speak) after the third film in the swashbuckling series. Rush says now he could not be happier with the new captain of the ship, Rob Marshall, whose background with Broadway and films such as “Chicago” put him in tune with Rush’s own rhythms. “Rob and Gore are just opposite sides of the same coin really,” said Rush, who plays Hector Barbossa in the franchise. “I think Gore probably comes from more of a rock ‘n’ roll and comic book angle and Rob is more from a musical theater and musical film, choreographic background. They overlap with their finely tuned comedic sense and sense of the absurd. They have a strong ...

‘Pirates’: No cannonballs fly this time — but is the story seaworthy?
There’s a moment in the new “Pirates of the Caribbean” film when a peg-legged privateer calls his crew to battle stations — an enemy ship has been spotted on the horizon — and the Disney franchise appears poised for another one of its signature sea battles. But the high-seas skirmish never happens and, in a bit of shocker, not one cannonball flies in all 137 minutes of this buccaneer blockbuster. “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” arrives in theaters Friday with an expensive star in Johnny Depp and a production budget somewhere north of $200 million just to make the film. Still, the project was a tighter ship when it came to visual effects and those open-ocean scenes that drive up costs on a movie. From a creative standpoint, the filmmakers say they were looking to refresh the franchise ...

Geoffrey Rush joins the Green Lantern Corps
EXCLUSIVE Geoffrey Rush is back in the mode of demanding teacher — but instead of a king’s speech therapist, the Aussie actor will be Tomar-Re, a bird-beaked alien who teaches Ryan Reynolds’ character how to use his new cosmic powers in “Green Lantern.” Warner Bros. is expected to officially announce Thursday that the 59-year-old Oscar winner is giving voice to the CG-created member of the Green Lantern Corps, the intergalactic peace-keeping force that gets its first earthling member in Hal Jordan (Reynolds). Rush’s character — introduced in the pages of DC Comics in 1961 — is a scientist on his home planet and almost spiritual in his tutelage of Jordan even if his reptilian-chicken visage might suggest someone more, um, peckish. Rush — one of the just 25 actors who have won an Oscar, a Tony and an Emmy – is coming off an Academy ...
