In its fifth season, “Game of Thrones” has shown that Westeros is not a kind place for kindhearted people. In this hostile environment, Brienne of Tarth journeys on, her sole focus to fulfill the oath she swore to Catelyn Stark to safely return the Stark girls to Winterfell. Portrayed by actress Gwendoline Christie in HBO’s epic fantasy series, Brienne was first introduced in Season 2, winning her place among Renly Baratheon’s personal guard despite her gender. Since then Brienne has spent much of her time traveling through the Seven Kingdoms after swearing fealty to Lady Stark following Renly’s murder. Lady Stark tasks Brienne with escorting the captive Jaime Lannister back to King’s Landing in exchange for the safe return of Sansa and Arya Stark, and it is this promise that Brienne is struggling to fulfill with Arya and Sansa rejecting her […]

More than 60,000 sci-fi, fantasy and comics fans are gathering at the Los Angeles Convention Center downtown this Halloween weekend for Stan Lee’s Comikaze. The home-grown pop culture expo, now in its fourth year, features panels, screenings, game tournaments, merchants and guest speakers from the genre entertainment world, not to mention costume contests and trick-or-treating — a dry option in case rainy weather predictions are correct. The convention kicks off this afternoon and runs through Sunday. Among Comikaze‘s featured guests this year are Gwendoline Christie, who plays lady knight Brienne of Tarth in HBO’s hit fantasy series “Game of Thrones” and who will star in “Star Wars: Episode VII” and “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 2”; “Game of Thrones” actor Alfie Allen (Theon Greyjoy); classic “Batman” stars Adam West and Julie Newmar; John Barrowman, of “Doctor Who,” “Torchwood” and […]

“Star Wars: Episode VII” has added two powerful actresses to its ensemble. Lupita Nyong’o, who earned a best supporting actress Academy Award earlier this year for her heart-wrenching turn in “12 Years a Slave,” is joining the film’s cast, as is Gwendoline Christie, best known as the towering fighter known as Brienne of Tarth on HBO’s “Game of Thrones.” The highly anticipated effort from director J.J. Abrams, which started production last month, already boasts a number of buzz-worthy actors including Adam Driver, best known for his role in HBO’s “Girls,” and Oscar Isaac, who won considerable acclaim for his turn in the Coen brothers’ “Inside Llewyn Davis,” as well as John Boyega, known for his work in the film “Attack the Block,” and newcomer Daisy Ridley. #dayone pic.twitter.com/18jtSH7xYM — Bad Robot (@bad_robot) May 16, 2014 Irish actor Domhnall Gleeson, performance capture expert Andy Serkis and venerable […]

“Game of Thrones” star Gwendoline Christie is joining the cast of next year’s “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2,” the final installment in the blockbuster movie franchise. Christie, whose previous screen credits include Terry Gilliam’s “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus” and the BBC children’s series “Wizards vs. Aliens,” is best known for her “Game of Thrones” role. In the lavish HBO fantasy series,” Christie plays Brienne of Tarth, a warrior woman who is better with a broadsword than most of the male knights who cross her path. Christie is slated to play Commander Lyme, taking over the role from “Mockingjay – Part 1” actress Lily Rabe (“American Horror Story”) due to a scheduling conflict with Rabe’s previous commitment to a production of “Much Ado About Nothing” at Shakespeare in the Park, according to Lionsgate. “Game of Thrones” returns in less than a month, bringing the world of Westeros back to the small screen after a 10-month hiatus. The fourth season of the sprawling HBO TV show, based on George R.R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” fantasy book series, premieres April 6. Judging by the trailers, the season promises plenty of action and, of course, intrigue as the Lannister, Stark and Tyrell clans deal with the fallout of the so-called Red Wedding, which saw a host of main characters massacred. Cruel King Joffrey (Jack Gleeson) prepares to marry Margaery Tyrell (Natalie Dormer), Jon Snow (Kit Harington) prepares to defend the Wall against a Wildling invasion, and Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) continues her conquest of Slaver’s Bay. (If any of this sounds fuzzy, fans can catch up on the show’s third season, now out on Blu-ray — watch an exclusive […]
