A new video clip from the upcoming superhero blockbuster “Avengers: Age of Ultron” features Marvel’s mightiest in a fun-spirited faceoff involving an otherworldly weapon. The clip, which debuted during Tuesday’s episode of “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” shows the Avengers gathered at what appears to be Stark Tower, enjoying drinks and takeout. When Thor (Chris Hemsworth) places his hammer, Mjolnir, on the coffee table, a challenge of sorts is issued. “Whosoever, be he worthy, shall have the power — yeah, whatever man, it’s a trick,” Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye says, mocking the inscription on the Asgardian hammer. “No, it is much more than that, my friend,” Thor laughs. “If I lift it, do I get to rule Asgard?” Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) challenges. “I will be fair but firmly cruel.” What follows is a comedic montage of superheroes attempting to lift the […]

Ever wondered if a superhero cape could pass for haute couture? On Thursday, “Project Runway: Under the Gunn” viewers will find out. The four remaining competitors on the fashionable reality competition program will use fearsome Marvel characters such as Black Widow, Captain Marvel, Falcon, Hawkeye and the Guardians of the Galaxy as inspiration for a ready-to-wear challenge. Expect a run on camouflage, tool belts and spandex fabric at Mood Fabrics ( how fast can an ambitious designer make 10-foot feathered wings?). Jaimie Alexander (who recently visited “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” as her “Thor” character Lady Sif) will serve as a guest judge ready to school the hopefuls on all things fierce. Cort Lane (that name just sounds like a superhero), Marvel’s vice president in charge of animation development and production, will also be on hand as a guest mentor. No word […]

The Avengers are assembling in Italy. Filming is underway in Europe on “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” and new photos from the production showcase Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch and Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Quicksilver, as well as Jeremy Renner back in costume as Hawkeye. Also pictured is writer-director Joss Whedon. (Click through the gallery above for a look at the production.) Whedon’s follow-up to his $1-billion-plus 2012 hit, “The Avengers,” will see the iconic team of heroes gather once more to battle the villainous Ultron (James Spader). It’s unclear how closely the film will tie to the “Age of Ultron” story in Marvel Comics, or whether Ant-Man (the protagonist in another upcoming Marvel film, directed by Edgar Wright) will be part of the film. In the comics, Ultron is an insane, sentient robot that tries to destroy its creator, Dr. Henry […]

Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones and Iron Fist are coming to the small screen thanks to a new deal between Marvel TV and Netflix. The on-demand and mail-in video provider has committed to at least four 13-episode live-action series based on the Marvel characters, culminating in a mini-series event based on Marvel’s “The Defenders,” Marvel TV announced today. The announcement follows Marvel TV’s first major foray into live-action television with this fall’s debut of “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” The blind superhero Daredevil, of course, has seen his share of screen time thanks to the Ben Affleck-starring “Daredevil.” Luke Cage is a fighter with super-strength and near-impervious skin. Jessica Jones is a former superheroine who has her own private eye firm and a tempestuous relationship with Luke Cage. And Iron Fist is a disciplined martial artist who happens to be Luke […]

Chris Ware’s innovative “Building Stories” had a lease on the Eisner Awards dais Friday night at Comic-Con International in San Diego, winning four awards — the most of any project this year. The unconventional set — a box containing 14 related but free-standing comics about residents who share a building — took home the prizes for writer/artist, new graphic album, publication design and lettering. Times book critic David L. Ulin wrote that with “Building Stories” Ware “has upped the ante, pushing comics in a new direction while paying tribute to their history.” Editor Chip Kidd, accepting the trophies on behalf of the absent creator, cracked early in the ceremony — the Oscars of comics — in the Hilton Bayfront’s Indigo Ballroom that “giving Chris Ware an award for lettering is kind of like giving Frank Lloyd Wright an award for doorknobs.” […]

Iron Man is back in the multiplex in a big way this weekend with “Iron Man 3,” but the character also features prominently in “Marvel’s Avengers Assemble,” a new animated series set to premiere July 7 on the Marvel Universe block on Disney XD, with a special one-hour sneak preview on May 26. Hero Complex is bringing you a new look at the team. The heroic lineup, which also includes Hulk, Captain America, Thor, Hawkeye and Black Widow, is the same as the Avengers who assembled for Joss Whedon’s 2012 blockbuster, with the notable inclusion of one of Captain America’s oldest friends and partners, the Falcon. A previous series, “The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes,” offered glimpses of numerous Marvel characters, but “Avengers Assemble” marks the first time this lineup has appeared on a television show. The series stars Adrian Pasdar […]

With “The Bourne Legacy” hitting theaters this week and “The Avengers” and “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol” under his belt, Jeremy Renner has officially made the leap to Hollywood action star. The 41-year-old Modesto native also plays a bounty hunter version of the classic fairy-tale character in “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters,” due out in January. Hero Complex caught up with Renner earlier this summer to talk about “Bourne,” which opens in theaters Friday, as well as his role in “Avengers,” which comes out on DVD and Blu-ray next month. HC: Before the last few years, you did a lot of indie films. Did you ever fancy you’d be an action hero? JR: Not by any stretch of the imagination. It just sort of became opportunities that I don’t think anybody really would want to turn away. As long as it was […]

“The Avengers” will fill the sky with Marvel icons – that is, if the summer’s most crowded film doesn’t remain earthbound under the great weight of its teeming ensemble. That challenge is why Joss Whedon was brought in as the director and screenwriter. He’s a true savant when it comes to snappy dialogue and scenes that become sly symphonies of angst, bravado, love, lust, doubt and deceit. With all of that in mind, we asked Whedon to talk about the major characters and what each brings to the group dynamic. Today: Hawkeye. Jeremy Renner portrays Clint Barton, a.k.a. Hawkeye, who has trained his body and mind to become a world-class marksman. In the process, he also became a world-class loner. “I love him because he really could not be less of a team player,” Whedon said. “He’s a sniper. That’s […]
