‘Marvel’s Avengers Assemble’: First look at the animated lineup

“Marvel’s Avengers Assemble” on Disney XD’s Marvel Universe block. (Disney XD)
Iron Man is back in the multiplex in a big way this weekend with “Iron Man 3,” but the character also features prominently in “Marvel’s Avengers Assemble,” a new animated series set to premiere July 7 on the Marvel Universe block on Disney XD, with a special one-hour sneak preview on May 26. Hero Complex is bringing you a new look at the team. The heroic lineup, which also includes Hulk, Captain America, Thor, Hawkeye and Black Widow, is the same as the Avengers who assembled for Joss Whedon’s 2012 blockbuster, with the notable inclusion of one of Captain America’s oldest friends and partners, the Falcon. A previous series, “The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes,” offered glimpses of numerous Marvel characters, but “Avengers Assemble” marks the first time this lineup has appeared on a television show. The series stars Adrian Pasdar […]

‘Bourne Legacy’ star Jeremy Renner on ‘Avengers’ action and more

Jeremy Renner said he seeks roles where he can "bring something three-dimensional and truthful and honest." (Ricardo DeAratanha / Los Angeles Times)
With “The Bourne Legacy” hitting theaters this week and “The Avengers” and “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol” under his belt, Jeremy Renner has officially made the leap to Hollywood action star. The 41-year-old Modesto native also plays a bounty hunter version of the classic fairy-tale character in “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters,” due out in January. Hero Complex caught up with Renner earlier this summer to talk about ”Bourne,” which opens in theaters Friday, as well as his role in “Avengers,” which comes out on DVD and Blu-ray next month. HC: Before the last few years, you did a lot of indie films. Did you ever fancy you’d be an action hero? JR: Not by any stretch of the imagination. It just sort of became opportunities that I don’t think anybody really would want to turn away. As long as it was […]

‘Avengers’: Joss Whedon says Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye is a ‘loner’

Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye in "the Avengers" (Walt Disney Studios)
“The Avengers” will fill the sky with Marvel icons – that is, if the summer’s most crowded film doesn’t remain earthbound under the great weight of its teeming ensemble. That challenge is why Joss Whedon was brought in as the director and screenwriter. He’s a true savant when it comes to snappy dialogue and scenes that become sly symphonies of angst, bravado, love, lust, doubt and deceit. With all of that in mind, we asked Whedon to talk about the major characters and what each brings to the group dynamic. Today: Hawkeye. Jeremy Renner portrays Clint Barton, a.k.a. Hawkeye, who has trained his body and mind to become a world-class marksman. In the process, he also became a world-class loner. “I love him because he really could not be less of a team player,” Whedon said. “He’s a sniper. That’s […]
