“Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” is getting into the holiday spirit with a weighty new video message inspired by the July 4 Independence Day holiday. The trailer features an audio recording of President John F. Kennedy’s Fourth of July address at Independence Hall in Philadelphia in 1962, adding a measure of gravity to the events depicted in the clip, the latest of several offering a glimpse into how the new world order of the apes comes into existence in the July 11 release. As Kennedy’s Cold War-influenced intonation “to regard any threat to the peace or freedom of one as a threat to the peace and freedom of all,” rings out, viewers glimpse just how efficiently the apes appear to have taken over the world and thoroughly dominated mankind. Set 10 years after 2011’s breakout hit “Rise of […]

“Stargate” may be getting a reboot. Director Roland Emmerich, who co-created “Stargate” with Dean Devlin, says he wants to remake “Stargate” as a film trilogy. “We went to MGM, who has the rights, and proposed to them to do a sequel, but as a reboot … and reboot it as a movie and then do three parts,” Emmerich told Digital Spy. “Pretty soon we’ll have to look for a writer and start.” But don’t expect James Spader, recently cast in Marvel’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” and Kurt Russell to reprise their roles from the 1994 sci-fi flick. “The actors look totally different,” Emmerich told Digital Spy. “It would not work.” The film, which Emmerich co-wrote with longtime collaborator Dean Devlin, spawned three spinoff TV series, as well as comics, video games and even a cartoon. “Stargate Universe,” the most recent TV […]

Even though director Roland Emmerich is just putting the finishing touches on his upcoming summer actioner “White House Down,” starring Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx, he’s already looking to the future beyond the movie’s June 28 release. He next plans to revisit his 1996 blockbuster “Independence Day” with at least one sequel, possibly a series of movies, and while fans of the alien invasion adventure should expect to see new, thrilling special effects, the director also is hoping to recapture the same entertaining tone and the same approach to character he displayed in the original movie. During his recent appearance at the fourth annual Hero Complex Film Festival, Emmerich, along with “Independence Day” producer Dean Devlin, star Jeff Goldblum and visual effects wizard Volker Engel, talked about taking a cue from classic disaster movies in locating the movie’s rhythm and […]

“Independence Day’s” co-writers — director Roland Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin – are ready to make at least one sequel to the 1996 alien invasion blockbuster, and maybe more. But at an appearance at the fourth annual Hero Complex Film Festival, the longtime collaborators, along with the film’s star Jeff Goldblum and the movie’s visual effects wizard Volker Engel, talked not only about the future of the franchise, but also took time to reflect on their favorite memories of making the original film. Emmerich chuckled while recalling the meeting he had with an irate Robert Loggia, who played the film’s Gen. William Grey. The actor had become furious over the fact that he was appearing in a spoof and no one had told him; he wasn’t, of course. A simple miscommunication was responsible for the confusion. Devlin remembered the first […]

Fans who’ve waited years for a follow-up to the sci-fi blockbuster “Independence Day” might soon be treated not just to one sequel to the memorable hit film, but to an entire franchise based on the alien invasion thriller. The film’s co-writers — director Roland Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin – told the Hero Complex Film Festival audience at a matinee screening of the 1996 blockbuster that they have ideas for a sequel (and maybe more). “What we talked a lot about, the mythology of why did the aliens come in the first place, what is the bigger story of this whole thing?” said Emmerich, seated beside Devlin, “Independence Day” star Jeff Goldblum and the movie’s effects wizard Volker Engel. “When you get a bigger mythology going, you have the chance to not only do one or two or three, you […]

Earth’s victory over alien invaders in “Independence Day” may have been but the first battle in a war. The film’s co-writers — director Roland Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin – told the Hero Complex Film Festival audience at a matinee screening of the 1996 blockbuster Sunday that they have ideas for a sequel (and maybe more) but, as Devlin put it, “things have to align … the planets have to get together.” And planets getting together is a thrilling prospect for fans of these spectacle specialists. Emmerich said he and Devlin have discussed why the aliens came in the first place, what the bigger story is. The director called the aliens a “swarm intelligence, and we are individual intelligence – and even if we kill each other … we have something very special, we have this indomitable human spirit.” So, […]
