‘Iron Man 3′: Don Cheadle open to Rhodey recruitment for ‘Avengers 2′

Col. James “Rhodey” Rhodes has been a minor, though important, character in the “Iron Man” films, but in “Iron Man 3,” he finally gets to step into the spotlight, thanks to a star-spangled paint job, courtesy of the president. Portrayed by Golden Globe-winning actor Don Cheadle, Rhodey is one of Tony Stark’s few trusted friends and the liaison between Stark Industries and the U.S. Air Force. Cheadle took over the role from Terrence Howard, who introduced Rhodey to the big screen in 2008′s “Iron Man.” In “Iron Man 2,” Rhodey got his own suit, dubbed War Machine, and fought alongside Tony Stark. In “Iron Man 3,” the president orders a red, white and blue redesign for the War Machine armor and recruits Rhodes to take out the villainous Mandarin. In his new Iron Patriot getup, Rhodey fights the terrorist threat […]

‘Iron Man 3′: Tony Stark lives by his wits in Marvel’s latest

Robert Downey Jr., left, and director Shane Black on the set of "Iron Man 3." (Zade Rosenthal / Marvel Entertainment)
It was the moment that brought a $200-million blockbuster to a screeching halt. Robert Downey Jr. stood frozen in pain after leaping onto a platform of an oil tanker on the Wilmington, N.C., soundstage where “Iron Man 3” was shooting its fiery finale last year. The actor had made ambitious wire jumps for stunt scenes before, but this time was different. The impact of the landing left him with an ankle sprain so severe he was unable to walk for seven weeks. “I was feeling a little bit invincible, I guess,” Downey said last week while making the promotional rounds for “Iron Man 3,” which rockets into theaters on May 3. “I checked it out, and I was like, ‘Oh, we got this.’ And we didn’t have it.” When it comes to playing Tony Stark, the genius-billionaire-playboy-inventor whom Downey first […]

‘Iron Man 3′: Chinese version unavailable to U.S. audiences, for now

“Iron Man 3″ will open in the U.S. and in China on May 3 — a rare feat of so-called day-and-date timing. But for all of the pre-production publicity about how Disney’s Marvel Entertainment and China’s DMG Entertainment joined forces to make the superhero sequel an international collaboration, the few extra sequences shot for the Chinese version of the movie won’t be part of its American release. In an interview Monday, Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios and the producer of “Iron Man 3,” described the scenes as “a very minor extra story line” that involves a character named Dr. Wu (Wang Xueqi). Actress Fan Bingbing has a role as well, as a woman close to the doctor. “Iron Man 3″ co-writer and director Shane Black did not direct the scenes that filmed in China, and star Robert Downey Jr. […]

The film, which opens in theaters May 3, pits Downey’s genius billionaire superhero against the Mandarin (Ben Kingsley) — one of the archvillains in the Iron Man comic books — and introduces several comic characters to the big screen for the first time, among them brilliant biologist Dr. Maya Hansen (played by Rebecca Hall) and Aldrich Killian (Guy Pearce), the founder of the brain-trust organization AIM. “Iron Man 3″ is directed by Shane Black (“Kiss Kiss Bang Bang”), who takes the reins from “Iron Man” […]

‘Iron Man 3′: Kevin Feige talks Tony Stark’s trauma

iron man 3, robert downey jr, tony stark
In the upcoming “Iron Man 3,” a sinister villain known as the Mandarin is looking to destroy Tony Stark’s world. But Ben Kingsley’s bad guy isn’t the only one out to sabotage the billionaire playboy and genius inventor. The film’s producer and Marvel’s chief movie architect Kevin Feige is in on the plan too. “We wanted to take Tony to a place that he hadn’t been since the first half of the first ‘Iron Man’ film, which is, essentially, by himself without his money, without his toys, without his gadgets, with just his mind, his intellect,” Feige said. “We wanted to do that in a big climactic fashion by literally taking away everything that is near and dear to him, as symbolized in that mansion crumbling down into the Pacific.” That sequence, of Stark’s hillside Malibu estate collapsing into the […]

‘Iron Man 3′: Tony Stark issues public threat in new clip

And now we know Iron Man’s address — it’s 10880 Malibu Point, Malibu, Calif., 90265. That intriguing detail comes courtesy of a new clip just released from “Iron Man 3,” which sees Tony Stark standing up in a brash, public way (naturally) to the Mandarin, telling the villain, played by Ben Kingsley, in no uncertain terms, “I’m not afraid of you,” in front of a pack of TV cameras and photographers. “I’ve decided that you just died, pal,” Stark says. “I’m going to come get the body.” And just like that, he pulls away in his white Audi. Directed by Shane Black (“Kiss Kiss Bang Bang”), “Iron Man 3,” due in theaters May 3, marks the first post-”Avengers” Marvel movie to see release in theaters, and the film opens with Stark struggling a bit to reintegrate into his posh Malibu […]

Robert Downey Jr. celebrates his 48th birthday April 4 during the South Korea tour for "Iron Man 3." (Walt Disney / Marvel)
“Iron Man 3″ won’t open in U.S. theaters until May 3, but leading man Robert Downey Jr., along with some of the film’s other stars, already have embarked on a massive world tour to help promote the Marvel blockbuster. The tour kicked off Thursday in South Korea, with Downey celebrating his 48th birthday in spectacular Tony Stark fashion — tuxedo, throngs of admirers, you name it. On Saturday the actor will appear at an event in Beijing, and on April 10 he and Ben Kingsley, who plays the villainous Mandarin in the film, will meet the press (and fans) in Moscow. Following stops slated in Munich, Paris and London, the travel itinerary concludes with the Los Angeles premiere of the movie at the El Capitan in Hollywood on April 24, and a New York date for Downey April 29. ‘Iron Man 3′: TV spot focuses on enmity between Tony Stark, the Mandarin

“You’re not a man, you’re nothing more than a maniac.” Those are some harsh words Tony Stark has for the Mandarin, but judging from the new TV spot touting Marvel’s upcoming blockbuster, “Iron Man 3,” due out May 3, there’s no love lost between the billionaire genius and his latest arch-nemesis. The clip features rapid-fire glimpses of some footage we’ve seen before, including the spectacular destruction of Stark’s cliffside home and the hero, played by Robert Downey Jr. lying in the snow, looking battered in his signature metal suit. But the spot really emphasizes the adversarial relationship between the characters that will drive much of the narrative of the film, directed by Shane Black (“Kiss Kiss Bang Bang”). In the comics, the Mandarin was an exiled orphan who discovered a crashed spaceship. He mastered the alien science he found there […]

Ben Kingsley’s Mandarin vs. the 10 best comic-book movie villains

Will Ben Kingsley's turn as the Mandarin live up to other great supervillain performances? (Marvel Comics; Zade Rosenthal / Marvel Studios)
When Oscar winner Ben Kingsley signed on to play the Mandarin in “Iron Man 3,” he joined a legion of super actors who have brought serious chops to villainous roles in comic-book movies throughout the years. In the “Iron Man 3” trailers, Kingsley’s Mandarin is calm and possessed, like a Zen master of evil, as he orchestrates the destruction of Tony Stark’s world. “Ladies, children, sheep,” he says in the first “Iron Man 3″ trailer in a menacing intonation all his own. “Some people call me a terrorist. I consider myself a teacher. Lesson No. 1: Heroes. There is no such thing.” Iron Man Quiz: How well do you know Tony Stark? But, whether Kingsley’s performance will live up to the best supervillain turns in cinema history remains to be seen. Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman in “Batman Returns,” for example, might […]
