‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ director: Johnny Depp ranks with Valentino, Gable and Bogart

Johnny Depp Rudolph Valentino
Johnny Depp will be remembered as the greatest star of his time and history will rank him with celluloid legends such as Humphrey Bogart, Rudolph Valentino and Clark Gable, according to Rob Marshall, the director of “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” the Disney seafaring adventure that (for now) stands as the biggest international box office hit of 2011. “He’s as vivid as those great stars of the past, Humphrey Bogart and Clark Gable and Errol Flynn,” Marshall said. ”Many, many, many years from now, when people look at this generation of Hollywood, he will be considered the great star of this era. He’s his own thing and he takes major chances every single time he makes a film.” Marshall, the 50-year-old filmmaker who was nominated for an Oscar for “Chicago,” said he had been told by “Pirates” producer Jerry Bruckheimer to ...

‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ star Penélope Cruz: ‘It’s so much fun to play a good liar’

Penelope Cruz attends 'Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides' Photocall in Madrid
The day before the Disneyland premiere of “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” the actress Penélope Cruz lounged back on a couch in a bright hotel room in Santa Monica and put her hand over her heart in a gesture of great emotion. “Making this film had great meaning for me and I will remember it for all of the rest of my life,” the 37-year-old star said with a kind of moist-eyed conviction that you don’t typically associate with summer popcorn films. “This became much more than a movie.” The reason went beyond scripts and box office — the Oscar-winning actress and her husband, Javier Bardem, welcomed their first child, Leo Encinas Bardem, in January and that meant during the six-month shoot for “Pirates” that Disney, director Rob Marshall, producer Jerry Bruckheimer, star Johnny Depp and the rest of the cast and crew all tilted toward the needs ...

‘Pirates of the Caribbean’: ILM delivers mermaids who are both beauty and beast

"Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" (Disney)
When Oscar-nominated director Rob Marshall came aboard as the new captain of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, he was immediately possessed by the siren call of one particular element in the script — beautiful mermaids. No one needs to explain cinematic possibilities of dangerous lust and predatory women to the director of “Chicago” and “Memoirs of a Geisha,” and when he took over the Disney buccaneer franchise he zeroed in on the script’s presentation of the magical aquatic creatures as a place to make his mark. “They are beautiful, seductive women but they use that beauty to lure men to their deaths,” Marshall said with an approving grin. “They are women but they are also animal. These are creatures and carnivores and they want to feed.” And when they feed, sailors in salt water are the main course. Marshall made the mermaids a paramount priority for Ben ...

‘Pirates’: No cannonballs fly this time — but is the story seaworthy?

"Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" (Walt Disney Studios)
There’s a moment in the new “Pirates of the Caribbean” film when a peg-legged privateer calls his crew to battle stations — an enemy ship has been spotted on the horizon — and the Disney franchise appears poised for another one of its signature sea battles. But the high-seas skirmish never happens and, in a bit of shocker, not one cannonball flies in all 137 minutes of this buccaneer blockbuster. “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” arrives in theaters Friday with an expensive star in Johnny Depp and a production budget somewhere north of $200 million just to make the film. Still, the project was a tighter ship when it came to visual effects and those open-ocean scenes that drive up costs on a movie. From a creative standpoint, the filmmakers say they were looking to refresh the franchise ...

‘Lone Ranger’: Armie Hammer of ‘Social Network’ poised to wear mask

Armie Hammer
When it came to the Lone Ranger, the classic question was “Who was that masked man?”  — but for some casual moviegoers on Tuesday the query might be “Who is that actor?” That’s because the news is spreading that Armie Hammer will portray the mysterious hero of the Old West in the new adventure film from Disney and producer Jerry Bruckheimer, a film that will star Johnny Depp as Tonto and have Gore Verbinski in the director’s seat. Disney insiders say the deal is not 100% done but that the contracts are being written. For Hollywood insiders it’s not a shock that Hammer, who turned heads with his dual performance as the Winklevoss twins in “The Social Network,” got the role (after all, the rumors have been well circulated) but for less-immersed film fans the decision might seem like a big head scratcher. You can ...

‘Lone Ranger’: Masked man need not be a star, says Bruckheimer

Lone-Ranger-Movie-Logo
The actor who will ride alongside Johnny Depp’s Tonto in “Lone Ranger” has big boots to fill, but he probably won’t be an established star, according to producer Jerry Bruckheimer. “You want somebody who can do the humor and somebody who’s attractive and charismatic,” said Bruckheimer, of casting the iconic masked man in the upcoming Disney reboot. “But I think it will be somebody who’s not that well known. That’s my guess.” Bruckheimer’s “guess” would support the rumors that Armie Hammer, the square-jawed newcomer who played the old-moneyed Winklevoss twins in David Fincher’s Oscar-winning drama “The Social Network,” is a front-runner for the title role. The producer is busy this month promoting that other Depp movie, due in theaters May 20 — “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” — the fourth in the so far $2.68-billion franchise and the ...

‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ filmmakers: This time our movie will make sense

Some filmmakers promise that their summer movies will have state-of-the-art special effects and big-name stars. The producer and director of the fourth “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie are offering a different vow: They pledge that this edition of the franchise will actually be coherent. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer admitted this week at CinemaCon – the movie theater owners convention in Las Vegas — that the last voyage of the franchise “was a little difficult to follow,” which is a bit like saying “War and Peace” is a long book. “I always like clear storytelling,” Bruckheimer said pointedly. Following that course, May 20’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” will play more like a stand-alone story and not require that moviegoers bring a plot spreadsheet to the multiplex. If the film is a success, the next “Pirates” installment will also play as ...
