Actor Jesse Eisenberg looks sinister as Lex Luthor in the first image from the upcoming “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.” He’s less built than the Luthor in the comics, but just as bald. The image — a black-and-white portrait of the actor in character — surfaced on Entertainment Weekly on Wednesday morning. Eisenberg is hardly the first actor to go bald for a villainous role on the big screen. The film world has often depicted characters with a penchant for evil with shiny noggins. Max Schreck’s blood-hungry performance in the 1922 horror film “Nosferatu” is hauntingly hairless. More recently, Karen Gillan got sadistic in hues of blue as Nebula in “Guardians of the Galaxy.” Before Eisenberg, Kevin Spacey took a turn as DC Comics’ wealthy supervillain in “Superman Returns.” Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor: Twitter reacts to Batman/Superman casting Plenty […]

Filmmaker Zack Snyder got the Internet buzzing Tuesday with a reveal of Ben Affleck wearing the new Batsuit he’ll sport in the director’s upcoming sequel to “Man of Steel,” and fans were quick to weigh in on this first glimpse of the latest incarnation of the Dark Knight. Many have pointed out that the suit seems influenced by Frank Miller’s take on the Dark Knight from the legendary graphic novels “The Dark Knight Returns” and “The Dark Knight Strikes Again” — which is fitting, as Snyder has said that Miller’s take on Batman will inform the film, due for release May 6, 2016. Some, though, criticized the noticeable interlacing veins that cover the suit as an ill-conceived touch. The untitled “Man of Steel” sequel hasn’t yet gone into production, and it’s already the most controversial movie in fandom. Chalk that up to director Zack Snyder’s somewhat unconventional casting choices. First, comics stalwarts expressed surprise and skepticism in August with the revelation that Ben Affleck would inherit the cape and cowl from actor Christian Bale, taking on the role of Batman opposite Henry Cavill’s Superman in Snyder’s much-anticipated superhero sequel, the follow-up to his 2013 blockbuster that grossed more than $668 million at the worldwide box office. Then came the announcement that Israeli actress Gal Gadot, best known for her work in the “Fast & Furious” films, would play Diana Prince/Wonder Woman in the movie, and the uproar started anew. Just last month, fresh fandemonium was heaped upon the movie with the announcement that boyish “Social Network” star Jesse […]

News that Jesse Eisenberg will play famous villain Lex Luthor and Jeremy Irons will play Alfred Pennyworth in Zack Snyder’s untitled Batman/Superman sequel to 2012’s “Man of Steel” is fueling some fiery reactions on Twitter. The casting decisions, announced Monday, came despite rumors that “Breaking Bad” star Bryan Cranston would play Superman’s arch-nemesis. Eisenberg and Irons will join Henry Cavill’s Superman, Ben Affleck’s Batman and Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, as well as several returning “Man of Steel” cast members. (Click through the gallery above for a peek at some of the casting decisions so far.) Eisenberg, of course, is best known for his roles in “Zombieland” and “The Social Network,” the latter of which earned him an Oscar nomination for his performance as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. Jesse Eisenberg will play famous villain Lex Luthor in Zack Snyder’s untitled sequel to 2012’s “Man of Steel,” which will see Henry Cavill’s Superman match wits with Ben Affleck’s Batman and Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman. Actor Jeremy Irons also has been cast as Bruce Wayne’s loyal butler Alfred, according to a statement issued by Warner Bros. Friday. The character had been played by Michael Caine in Christopher Nolan’s acclaimed Gotham City trilogy. Though Internet rumors last year widely suggested Bryan Cranston would be tapped to play Luthor, the role ultimately went to Eisenberg, famous for roles in such films as “Zombieland” and “The Social Network.” In that David Fincher film, he played Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and earned an Oscar nomination for his performance.
