Josh Trank, who was attached to direct a “Star Wars” standalone film, has exited the project. “I’m making a personal decision to move forward on a different path,” Trank said in a statement Friday. “I’ve put a tremendous amount of thought into this, and I know deep down in my heart that I want to pursue some original creative opportunities.” Trank was set to direct the second of several standalone “Star Wars” movies Lucasfilm has planned to exist alongside the existing trilogy, the prequel trilogy and the upcoming sequel trilogy. Few details have been unveiled about the film, which is expected to be released in 2018. Trank had been working on the project for a year. His absence from a planned presentation at last month’s Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim raised eyebrows, though Trank blamed the flu. Kiri Hart, Lucasfilm’s vice president of […]

The first trailer for “Fantastic Four” is out, offering a glimpse of the super-powered quartet’s retooled origin story. The trailer, released Tuesday, opens with four sweeping landscape views — New York City, mountaintops, a house in a neighborhood and cornfields — presumably of the homes of each member of the foursome. “How did we get this far? Human beings have an immeasurable desire to discover, to invent, to build,” the voiceover narrates. “Our future depends on us furthering these ideals — a responsibility that rests on the shoulders of generations to come. But with every new discovery there is risk, there is sacrifice, and there are consequences.” The inventor, of course, is Reed Richards, who is shown as a bespectacled child experimenting in a garage and then as a grown-up scientist (played by “Whiplash” actor Miles Teller) walking through an […]

Josh Trank is set to join “Godzilla” filmmaker Gareth Edwards as a new recruit to the “Star Wars” universe. Trank will direct one of the multiple standalone movies that Disney plans to release that will explore the world created by George Lucas outside of the primary episodes of the franchise. Lucasfilm announced Trank’s selection Wednesday, but revealed no details about the film’s story line. It’s been a busy time in the “Star Wars” universe. Earlier last month, Edwards, who enjoyed a blockbuster success with his big-budget “Godzilla” reboot, was tapped to helm another of the “Star Wars” standalone projects, which will be written by Gary Witta (“The Book of Eli,” Telltale Games’ adaptation of “The Walking Dead”). Also in May, J.J. Abrams’ “Star Wars: Episode VII,” scheduled to arrive in theaters Dec. 18, 2015, officially went into production, with a cast […]

It looks like “The Fantastic Four” might have found its Victor von Doom. Actor Toby Kebbell is in negotiations to play villain Doctor Doom in director Josh Trank’s reboot of “The Fantastic Four.” Kebbell appears set to join the cast, which includes Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara, Jamie Bell and “Divergent” actor Miles Teller as Johnny Storm (the Human Torch), Sue Storm (the Invisible Woman), Benjamin Grimm (the Thing) and Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic), respectively. The English actor has a history in cinematic blockbusters — his résumé includes turns in such large-scale films as “Wrath of the Titans,” “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” and Oliver Stone’s 2004 feature “Alexander.” Kebbell also has worked in more critically well-received films including the Joy Division movie “Control,” Steven Spielberg’s World War I drama “War Horse” and last year’s […]
