‘Cinderella’ trailer: Disney brings magic to live-action fairy tale

Lily James in "Cinderella." (Disney)
The first trailer for Disney’s live-action take on Cinderella is out, and from the looks of it, the film adheres closely to the animated classic, right down to the cartoon-y mice. “Cinderella,” directed by Kenneth Branagh from a screenplay penned by Aline Brosh McKenna and Chris Weitz, sees “Downton Abbey” actress Lily James wearing the Disney princess’ iconic glass slippers. “Game of Thrones” alumnus Richard Madden portrays her prince, Helena Bonham Carter plays her fairy godmother, and Cinderella’s trio of tormentors include Cate Blanchett as the stepmother and Holliday Grainger and Sophie McShera as the wicked stepsisters. The trailer, released Wednesday, is narrated by Hayley Atwell (“Agent Carter”), who plays Cinderella’s mother — a character who does not appear in Disney’s animated rendition of the fairy tale. “I want to tell you a secret that will see you through all […]

‘Thor 2’: Chris Hemsworth says Patty Jenkins has done her homework

Patty Jenkins "Thor" (featured image)
“Thor” star Chris Hemsworth is sad to see director Kenneth Branagh leave Asgard, but he said the filmmaker’s rumored replacement, Patty Jenkins, is up to the cosmic task she would inherit. “She has a great take on the story and a solid grasp on that kind of universe,” the Aussie actor said Wednesday on the set of “Snow White and the Huntsman” in eastern Wales. Hemsworth, who plays the Huntsman in the ambitious fantasy film, was filming horseback scenes on a beach for a battle sequence against Ravenna, played by Charlize Theron — who just happened to win an Oscar in the Jenkins-directed 2003 film “Monster.” Jenkins (who also directed the acclaimed pilot episode of AMC’s “The Killing” )  isn’t completely locked in for the Marvel Studios sequel but has confirmed that she is in advanced talks to pick up where Branagh left off. The first “Thor” film […]

‘Thor’ review: Marvel meets Shakespeare with mixed results

DAYS OF THUNDER: We’ve been counting down to the release of “Thor” with a month of on-the-set reports, exclusive photos and interviews with the cast and crew of the first truly cosmic Marvel Studios film. Today: Kenneth Turan’s review.  Kenneth Turan is celebrating his 20th anniversary as a film critic for the Los Angeles Times and he’s watched as super-hero films have moved to new heights at the box office. After seeing “Thor,” Turan writes in his review that the film is a “smackdown” between two opposing forces — Kenneth Branagh,  “a director still best known for superior Shakespearean productions,” and Marvel Entertainment, a “well-oiled mass entertainment machine boasting ownership of more than 8,000 comic book characters and more than $6.1 billion in worldwide box office grosses.” In Turan’s view, the contest was a draw, judging by the new film that is expected to dominate at theaters […]

‘Thor': Chris Hemsworth on magic, crocodiles and Hollywood

chrishemsworth4
DAYS OF THUNDER: We’re counting down to Friday’s release of “Thor” with a month of on-the-set reports, exclusive photos and interviews with the cast and crew of the first truly cosmic Marvel Studios film. Today: Chris Hemsworth. As a youngster, Chris Hemsworth, star of the new film “Thor,” believed in magic. After all, he had seen it with his own eyes. The 27-year-old grew up in the sun-scorched northern territory of Australia and once watched as his father — who had been hospitalized again and again for painful back spasms — gave himself over to the rituals of a healer from a nearby Aboriginal tribe. “He had gone to hospital like once a month for these spasms and this man had said he could see something wrong with my dad’s aura and that he could fix it,” Hemsworth said. “After […]

DAYS OF THUNDER: We’re counting down to Friday’s release of “Thor” with a month of on-the-set reports, exclusive photos and interviews with the cast and crew of the first truly cosmic Marvel Studios film. Today: The film’s Hollywood premiere. When “Thor” debuts in theaters over the weekend, it will be the first in a glut of big-budget superhero films to hit the box office this summer. But after “X-Men: First Class,” “Green Lantern” and “Captain America: The First Avenger” roll out over the next few months, is it possible that audiences will tire of seeing hunky men with supernatural powers on the big screen? “I think at some point people will get bored of it, but I don’t know if they’ll get bored of the Marvel ones, because they keep hitting them pretty hard,” said Clark Gregg, who has also […]

‘Thor': Kenneth Branagh’s new quest with his childhood favorite

Kenneth Branagh (Christine Cotter/Los Angeles Times)
The day’s light was fading, but the cast and crew of “Thor” were making good headway on a battle scene — a giant, fire-breathing alien automaton was laying waste to a tiny desert town. Still, director Kenneth Branagh kept glancing at the horizon with anxious Irish eyes. The Marvel Studios and Paramount production already had been battered by windstorms, and on that April day last year, Branagh feared another tempest was on the way. Sure enough, a few minutes later, Branagh’s team was in a mad scramble to save lighting gear, cast chairs, script sides, props and their own eyesight from the winds barreling through the main drag of their faux city, which recalled both old Edward Hopper paintings and young Dennis Hopper films. Later, Branagh, whose crew also dealt with rain, frigid nights and mud, was sanguine about the […]
