The graphic novel is still a relatively young medium but it does have its enduring classics. If you wanted to assemble a bookshelf of essential graphic novels, for instance, there are three 1980s works you would certainly reach for: “The Dark Knight Returns,” “Watchmen” and the first volume of Art Spiegelman’s “Maus: A Survivor’s History.” The only comic book to win a Pulitzer Prize, Spiegelman’s “Maus” epic (volume one was published in 1986, volume two in 1991) stands as the most acclaimed work in the history of sequential-art storytelling and yet, somehow, it still feels underrated.
