SAN DIEGO — There are plenty of Hollywood awards shows where people get gussied up in tuxedos, designer gowns and jewels on loan from Harry Winston. There are not so many, however, where attendees can be found dressed as superheroes, zombies and scary clowns. Just such an event was held Thursday night in San Diego’s Petco Park, where about 4,500 Comic-Con-goers gathered for mtvU’s first Fandom Awards. The ceremony, which will air on the college-demographic-targeted channel on Sunday night, was designed to celebrate exactly the sort of fervent, obsessive pop-culture ardor that draws droves of people to Comic-Con International every year. It is these heady philosophical queries that MTV is asking you to answer, announcing the categories for the mtvU Fandom Awards, the network’s new awards show designed to honor fans and their favorite programming. The show is set for July 24 at Comic-Con International in San Diego; voting began Thursday, and you can cast your ballot until July 23. FULL COVERAGE: San Diego Comic-Con 2013 Categories include “breakout fandom of the year,” “best fandom forever,” (a sort of Hall of Fame category that includes “Harry Potter” and “Batman”), the “fandom feat of the year,” […]

MTV to debut Fandom Awards at Comic-Con, Linkin Park to headline

MTV is heading to Comic-Con International in a big way, with a new awards show designed to honor fan favorite programming. Set for July 24, the mtvU Fandom Awards will pay tribute to the best offerings in genre film and television from the past year, with musical act Linkin Park headlining the ceremony at San Diego’s Petco Park. The awards will also celebrate fans themselves and will take place as part of a larger fete — the MTV Fan Fest, a free party at the stadium open to all Comic-Con badge holders. An hour-long special with highlights from the evening will air on MTV and MtvU July 27, though no nominees or hosts have been announced. FULL COVERAGE: San Diego Comic-Con 2013 The Linkin Park appearance comes as the hard-rocking pride of Agoura Hills, Calif., is gearing up to release […]
