Middle-Earth’s denizens journeyed to Hollywood on Monday night for the world premiere of “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug,” the second of Peter Jackson’s three films based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s 1937 novel, “The Hobbit.” The film’s stars hit the shrub- and leaf-adorned black carpet in front of the Dolby Theater in Hollywood to fête the latest adaptation of the mystical realm where hobbits, dwarves, elves, orcs and goblins dwell. The carpet was designed to echo the sylvan realm of Mirkwood, which plays an important role in the new film, set to open in theaters Dec. 13. Dwarf-prince Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) and his company, which includes Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), travel through the forest on the next leg of their quest to reclaim Erebor, the treasure-filled city under the Lonely Mountain that was usurped from Thorin’s ancestors by the dragon […]

‘The Originals’: Charles Michael Davis on Marcel’s pride, back story

“The Originals” star Charles Michael Davis is new blood in the “Vampire Diaries” universe. His character Marcel is vengefully staking his claim in vampire-overrun New Orleans amid a bitter rivalry with his creator, the fearsome hybrid Klaus. The new CW spinoff series, which aired its back-door pilot during “The Vampire Diaries” last April, premiered last week and centers on the family of Niklaus Mikaelson, or Klaus (Joseph Morgan), who was born a werewolf but was transformed along with his half-siblings into the world’s first vampires thanks to a protective spell cast centuries ago by their mother. The bloodline of this Original family links all the vampires of the two television series. In Tuesday’s episode, Klaus’ estranged sister Rebekah (Claire Holt) arrives in New Orleans at their brother Elijah’s (Daniel Gillies) behest. Klaus is already embroiled in two rivalries: one with […]

This post has been updated. See note below for details. “The Originals” is set to premiere this fall on the CW, and the show’s stars are already working to establish their characters in their new setting, gearing up for a rivalry between their fledgling pilot and its parent series “The Vampire Diaries.” In the same vein as “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Angel,” “Hercules” and “Xena: Warrior Princess,” and “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Private Practice,” the new series picks up members of “The Vampire Diaries” cast and transplants them in a new setting while maintaining their previous story lines. The shows also amp up fan excitement, building to cross-over episodes featuring characters from both. The latest vampire saga on the network’s supernatural roster sees the deadly original vampires, a brood of siblings who were turned into vampires to survive werewolves terrorizing their […]

‘Game of Thrones’ Kit Harington teases ‘powerful’ Season 4

“Game of Thrones” fans are in for an epic upcoming season of HBO’s lavish series, according to ensemble star Kit Harington, who plays Jon Snow, a sworn brother of the Night’s Watch. Speaking about Season 4 with Hero Complex at Comic-Con, Harington offered a glimpse at the premium channel’s adaptation of  George R.R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” book series. Viewers last saw Jon betraying the Wildlings, the “free folk”  he was embedded with north of the realm’s towering Wall. After he joined them on a raid over the icy Wall in the direction of Castle Black, his refusal to kill a horse breeder led the Wildling raiders to question his allegiance to their cause. During the betrayal, Jon also broke the heart of a feisty Wildling woman named Ygritte (Rose Leslie)  in order to fulfill the larger part […]

Comic-Con nightlife, as told by Kit Harington, Felicia Day and more

Lana Parrilla
With San Diego’s Comic-Con International expanding nearly every year, the annual pop culture convention has also accommodated the flourishing nightlife. “I understand that San Diego Comic-Con is like the Detroit Auto Show,” said “Banshee” actress Lily Simmons. “Sure, other places can have an auto show, but it’s not the Detroit Auto Show. “ While the city’s boisterous Gaslamp Quarter bustled with convention-goers and other Saturday night patrons, Hollywood took on its fair share of lavish events. “It’s just kind of insane,” said “Game of Thrones” actress Esme Bianco. “I think there’s a scale of everything that’s kind of amazing to me. A couple people have warned me that it’s big. Everyone’s right!” FULL COVERAGE: San Diego Comic-Con 2013 Bianco, who played the upward-climbing courtesan Ros on the HBO series, said she party-hopped quite a bit over the weekend, starting off […]

While the San Diego Convention Center hosts the fanboys and hit-girls of Comic-Con during the day, in the evening the bars, hotels and streets of San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter become the home of the annual convention’s lively nightlife. Comic-Con has earned a reputation for its hospitality to many fandoms as it has expanded from a mere comic book convention to an event that celebrates all genres with major fan followings. The annual gathering of some 130,000 pop culture enthusiasts gives way to a lavish party scene. Sure, there’s still a cosplay prom and countless trivia contests, and many attendees spend their nights camped out on the sidewalks awaiting badges for the  panels. But the mainstream Hollywood studios that have been attracted to Comic-Con in the last decade also shell out big bucks to entertain celebrities and industry members who make the […]

‘Vampire Diaries’: Daniel Gillies on why we love vampires

Daniel Gillies (featured image)
Daniel Gillies plays formidable Elijah foe-turned-ally in Season 3 of  “The Vampire Diaries.” After being resurrected for the fourth time in the series, Gillies shares his insights on the show’s star, Nina Dobrev, who plays small-town doppelganger Elena Gilbert, the future of the Original vampire clan and the classical nature of his character. But Elijah isn’t Gillies’ main focus — upcoming projects include the NBC medical drama “Saving Hope,” with “Smallville’s” Erica Durance and Michael Shanks, and a new film, “Broken Kingdom,” with Rachel Leigh Cook that he wrote and directed. This is Part 2 of an interview with Nardine Saad; you can read Part 1 here. NS: You say Elijah has been around for 1,000 years, yet he’s still getting duped by “ludicrous nothings.” Do you consider Elena  a “nothing?” DG: I’m certainly not calling Elena nothing. Yes, that instance […]

‘Vampire Diaries’: Daniel Gillies sinks teeth into Original vampire Elijah

The Vampire Diaries feature image -- Elijah
“The Vampire Diaries” has killed off quite a few of both its beloved and despicable characters in its three seasons on The CW, but one character whom executive producers Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson keep bringing back is the Original vampire Elijah, played by Daniel Gillies. Elijah has returned once again to Mystic Falls at the hands of vampires Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) and his brother Stefan (Paul Wesley) to defeat the indestructible supernatural Klaus (Joseph Morgan), Elijah’s Original vampire brother who also happens to be a werewolf hybrid. Now their fearsome Original vampire siblings, who were created centuries ago by their mother — the Original witch — to preserve their lives from a plague, are wreaking even more havoc in the spooky town. Elijah might seem to be on the side of mortal Elena Gilbert, played by the show’s […]

‘Vampire Diaries,’ CWingo make a game of seeking new viewer blood

The Vampire Diaries (Featured Image)
“The Vampire Diaries” fans have a new reason to sink their teeth into Season 3 reruns during the CW show’s mid-season hiatus. On Thursday, the network launches CWingo, an interactive game for fans to play along as they track the progress of the show. It’s like bingo with a social media twist, albeit without the smoky gaming hall or grandma and grandpa.  The game requires viewers to log into the CW community via Facebook on their smartphones, tablets or computers to get the game board and challenge friends to see who the bigger “TVD” fan is.  Each tile has a scene from the episode, and once it appears on TV, users click on it to move forward. See Damon take a bite out of someone’s neck? Check! See Stefan and Elena walk into Mystic Grill? Check! Or see Tyler Lockwood […]
