Paycheck Friday: Skip the movies and visit your local comic book shop

It’s time for another installment of Paycheck Friday, the weekly roundup of some of Hero Complex’s favorite toys, games, books and other geek merchandise. While a slate of summer movies including “Tomorrowland,” “Mad Max: Fury Road” and “Pitch Perfect 2” battle it out in the box office over the weekend, this week’s paycheck goes to taking a trip to your local comic book shop to catch up on the month’s releases. With May marking the launch of Marvel’s “Secret Wars” event series that sees the various Marvel universes combining into one unified Battleworld just as DC’s “Convergence” event is winding down, it’s easy to get lost in the various interconnected tie-in series from the “Big Two.” Fear not, this week’s comic book selections are titles that require no knowledge of “Secret Wars” or “Convergence.” This week’s first pick is “The […]

Paycheck Friday: Add some ‘Mad Max’ flair to your workspace

For this week’s installment of Paycheck Friday, Hero Complex’s roundup of some of our favorite toys, books and other geek merchandise, we turn to the post-apocalyptic world depicted in “Mad Max.” Now in theaters, “Mad Max: Fury Road” follows Mad Max Rockatansky’s (Tom Hardy) quest for survival in a desert wasteland after civilization has collapsed. It is a world where, as director George Miller described to The Times in a previous interview, “all the bad things we see in the news come to pass: all the economic collapse, oil wars and water wars, even stuff we never see coming.” With that in mind, this week’s paycheck goes to re-creating a scaled-down version of this post-apocalyptic world to liven up your workspace. First, to set the appropriate mood, we recommend picking up the “Mad Max: Fury Road” soundtrack. While the standard […]

Paycheck Friday: Celebrate Joss Whedon with a trip down memory lane

It’s time for a new installment of Paycheck Friday, Hero Complex’s weekly roundup of some of our favorite toys, books, games and other merchandise. The news heard around the geek world this week was “Avengers: Age of Ultron” director Joss Whedon leaving the Twitterverse. Whedon eventually spoke out about why he exited the social media network, so this week’s paycheck will be spent paying tribute to his choice by celebrating the Whedon women we love. The woman who started it all, of course, was Buffy Summers. She was the one girl in all the world chosen to stand against the vampires, the demons and the forces of darkness, or so it went in Whedon’s breakout hit TV show “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” This week’s first pick is “The Little Book of Whittling” by Chris Lubkemann. This introductory guide is great […]

Paycheck Friday: Assemble your own ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ play set

Welcome to a special all-Avengers installment of Paycheck Friday, a roundup of some of Hero Complex’s favorite geek merchandise including toys, games and books. “Avengers: Age of Ultron” hit theaters in North America today, so it’s only fitting that this week’s paycheck could be spent filling your own Avengers-themed toy box. Though statues and collectibles are definitely nice, for this installment we’re focusing on products that are best used after being torn out of their packaging for hands-on interaction. A must-have for any good toy box is a set of action figures, so the first item on this week’s roundup is this “Avengers: Age of Ultron” Captain America and Black Widow action figure set from Hasbro. It’s no secret that there is a slight disparity when it comes to the number of Black Widow figures compared with that of her […]

Paycheck Friday: Take a trip to your local comic book shop

Welcome to another edition of Paycheck Friday, a roundup of some of Hero Complex’s favorite geek merchandise including books, games and toys. Young Bobby Drake was outed during a conversation with Jean Grey in this week’s issue of “All New X-Men,” making Drake’s Iceman one of the most high-profile LGBTQ superheroes in Marvel comics. In light of this occasion, this week’s paycheck goes to our local comic book shop to pick up some of our favorite comics featuring queer characters that hit the shelves this month. It’s only fitting to start with “All New X-Men” No. 40 written by Brian Michael Bendis with art by Muhmud Asrar. An ongoing series since 2012, “All New X-Men” centers on younger versions of the five original X-Men members who were brought from the past to face their future counterparts. The issue follows “The […]

Paycheck Friday: Celebrate ‘Star Wars’ with a collection of your own

Welcome to a special “Star Wars” edition of Paycheck Friday, a roundup of some of Hero Complex’s favorite toys, books, games and other merchandise. In honor of Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim this weekend, this week’s paycheck goes to expanding (or starting) the “Star Wars”-themed shelf in your geek cave. Included are picks for items available outside the confines of the Anaheim Convention Center, as well as some exclusives from the expo. First up we have the Lego Slave I set. When building a collection, it’s quite apropos to have a trophy that also displays your building skills. What better way to celebrate the “Star Wars” franchise than with a model of a ship that appears in films from the original trilogy and the prequel series? The Lego Slave I set also includes figures for Boba Fett and a carbonite-sealed […]

Paycheck Friday: Throw a ‘Game of Thrones’ viewing party

Welcome to the inaugural edition of Hero Complex’s new Paycheck Friday series. Every other Friday, Hero Complex will guide you through the vast world of toys, books, games and other geek merchandise and share some of our favorites. With “Game of Thrones” returning for its fifth season on Sunday, it’s only fitting that this week’s paycheck goes to fund a viewing party for the season premiere. Hopefully, these items will help guests get into the proper mood without taking an unpleasant turn the way celebrations often take in the series. First up, we have “A Feast of Ice and Fire: The Official Companion Cookbook.” What’s a Westerosi party without food? Anybody familiar with George R.R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” series knows that Martin’s novels are filled with highly detailed, almost opulent descriptions of the extravagant feasts indulged […]
