New ‘Doctor Who’ companion? Samuel Anderson joins Season 8 cast

The Doctor might be getting a new companion. Samuel Anderson, who was in a brief scene in the “Doctor Who” 50th anniversary special, “The Day of the Doctor,” will be playing a new recurring character in the show’s eighth season. Anderson is set to play Danny Pink, a teacher at Coal Hill Secondary School and colleague of Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman), according to BBC America’s blog. The school has been a recurring setting for “Doctor Who” since the classic science-fiction adventure series’ first episode, “An Unearthly Child.” In the 1963 episode, the Doctor’s granddaughter Susan Foreman attends the Coal Hill School while the Doctor (William Hartnell) repairs the TARDIS, and two teachers discover their secret. The Seventh Doctor (Sylvester McCoy) revisited the school in 1988′s “Remembrance of the Daleks,” and last year’s anniversary special revealed that current companion Clara Oswald […]

‘Doctor Who’ first look: Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor costume revealed

Say goodbye to the bow tie. Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor has a new look, seemingly inspired by the costumes of classic “Doctor Who” actors. BBC America on Monday unveiled the first photo of Capaldi’s costume — a dark blue Crombie coat with red lining, dark blue trousers, white shirt and black Doc Marten shoes. Gone are previous “Doctor Who” star Matt Smith’s purple coat and bow tie. Costume designer Howard Burden has “woven the future from the cloth of the past,” Capaldi said in a news release. “Simple, stark, and back to basics. No frills, no scarf, no messing, just 100% rebel Time Lord.” The new look is in keeping with many critics’ hopes that Capaldi’s tenure will restore some gravitas to the ever-regenerating character. “He offers a range of new tonal possibilities, some of which are also old possibilities. […]

‘Doctor Who’ filming begins, Peter Capaldi takes the TARDIS reins

Filming has begun on the new season of “Doctor Who,” starring Peter Capaldi as the show’s eponymous time traveler. Capaldi, who took over as the Doctor from Matt Smith in last year’s Christmas special, “The Time of the Doctor,” is shown donning Smith’s purple tweed frock coat and waistcoat, though no bow tie, in a newly released photo from the film’s set (check it out above). “New job, first day, slightly nervous,” Capaldi said in a BBC news release. “Just like the Doctor, I’m emerging from the TARDIS into a whole other world.” Although the Scottish actor, best known for his role as a foul-mouthed government official in the political comedy “The Thick of It,” has appeared as a minor character in a previous “Doctor Who” episode (“The Fires of Pompeii”) and in “Torchwood” miniseries spinoff “Children of Earth,” Capaldi […]

‘Doctor Who’ fans talk Matt Smith, Peter Capaldi on Twitter

Matt Smith in "The Time of the Doctor." (BBC America)
“Times change, and so must I.” Thus spoke the 11th Doctor, as played by Matt Smith, moments before the time-traveling extraterrestrial shed his appearance and regenerated in a new form — this time played by Peter Capaldi. (Fans who missed the Christmas episode, beware — there are spoilers ahead.) The passing of the Doctor mantle came during the final moments of “The Time of the Doctor,” the show’s ninth Christmas special since its 2005 revival and the 800th episode in its 50-year history. Smith’s 11th Doctor spent most of the episode protecting the town of Christmas on the planet Trenzalore, and aging significantly in the process. After delivering his swan song aboard the Tardis, the 11th Doctor quickly morphed into the 12th. Viewers didn’t have much time to see Capaldi in action, as his arrival was brief and hectic: Upon regenerating, […]

On ‘Doctor Who,’ it’s ‘Time’ to change the Doctor

Peter Capaldi is the new star of "Doctor Who." (BBC/MCT)
On Christmas Day 2013, Peter Capaldi will take over for Matt Smith as the star of “Doctor Who,” the phenomenal BBC sci-fi series about a traveler in time and space. (It airs here on BBC America.) At some point in the holiday special “The Time of the Doctor,” Smith’s Doctor will regenerate into Capaldi’s — same character, new body — and the era of the 12th Doctor will begin. Capaldi is best known to Americans, which is not to say well known, as the F-bombing spin doctor in Armando Iannucci’s political comedies “The Thick of It” (BBC series) and “In the Loop” (film spinoff) and, reaching back through the foggy mists of time, for Bill Forsyth’s gentle comedy of Scotland, “Local Hero.” At any rate, he is better known to us than were immediate predecessors Smith, David Tennant and Christopher […]

PERSPECTIVE And as the world (or one obsessed subset thereof) watched, the name of the person to play the Twelfth Doctor — though not, of course, the name of the Doctor, which shall remain unspoken — was revealed. Peter Capaldi, the bookmakers’ choice by a wide margin, will take over for the retiring Matt Smith, the Doctor since 2010. Smith’s Doctor will regenerate into Capaldi’s — same character, just a different body — this Christmas. The new star of “Doctor Who” is best known to Americans, which is not to say well known, as the F-bombing spin doctor in Armando Iannucci’s political comedies “The Thick of It” (BBC series) and “In the Loop” (film spinoff) and, reaching back through the foggy mists of time, for Bill Forsyth’s gentle comedy of Scotland, “Local Hero.” He is, at any rate, better known […]
