“Iron Man 3″ won’t open in U.S. theaters until May 3, but leading man Robert Downey Jr., along with some of the film’s other stars, already have embarked on a massive world tour to help promote the Marvel blockbuster. The tour kicked off Thursday in South Korea, with Downey celebrating his 48th birthday in spectacular Tony Stark fashion — tuxedo, throngs of admirers, you name it. On Saturday the actor will appear at an event in Beijing, and on April 10 he and Ben Kingsley, who plays the villainous Mandarin in the film, will meet the press (and fans) in Moscow. Following stops slated in Munich, Paris and London, the travel itinerary concludes with the Los Angeles premiere of the movie at the El Capitan in Hollywood on April 24, and a New York date for Downey April 29. Directed […]

“You’re not a man, you’re nothing more than a maniac.” Those are some harsh words Tony Stark has for the Mandarin, but judging from the new TV spot touting Marvel’s upcoming blockbuster, “Iron Man 3,” due out May 3, there’s no love lost between the billionaire genius and his latest arch-nemesis. The clip features rapid-fire glimpses of some footage we’ve seen before, including the spectacular destruction of Stark’s cliffside home and the hero, played by Robert Downey Jr. lying in the snow, looking battered in his signature metal suit. But the spot really emphasizes the adversarial relationship between the characters that will drive much of the narrative of the film, directed by Shane Black (“Kiss Kiss Bang Bang”). In the comics, the Mandarin was an exiled orphan who discovered a crashed spaceship. He mastered the alien science he found there […]

But how much do you actually know about the billionaire playboy super hero? “Iron Man 3″ opens in theaters on May 3, and we thought now might be a good time to test your Tony Stark/Iron Man knowledge. PHOTOS: ‘Iron Man 3′: Trajectory of a superhero Below you’ll find questions about Pepper Potts’ real name, how Tony Stark’s parents actually died and where the L.A. based super hero is most likely to nurse a hangover after a night of serious drinking. Robert Downey Jr. — er, make that Tony Stark — appears battle-worn and beleaguered as he clutches his lady love close in the new “Iron Man 3″ poster. Downey and Gwyneth Paltrow, who plays Pepper in Marvel’s blockbuster franchise, strike that classic superhero pose as black metal iron men rise around them into skies marked by smoke and missiles. The poster — here’s the full image — is the latest in a Tony Stark drumbeat that shows no signs of slowing between now and the film’s May 3 release. James Bond jilted: Sam Mendes says ‘no’ to follow-up And it appears that’s just the way fans like it. Just this week alone, we’ve learned choice details from the third installment in the franchise, including this chilling line: “I’m going to offer you a choice. Do you want an empty life […]

“I’m going to offer you a choice. Do you want an empty life or a meaningful death?” The question, as posed by Ben Kingsley as the Mandarin, is one of the most memorable moments in the newest trailer for “Iron Man 3,” which debuted online Tuesday morning. The Oscar-winning actor is the antagonist to Robert Downey Jr.’s genius billionaire inventor Tony Stark in the third installment in the massively popular Marvel franchise, due out May 3. The centerpiece of the clip is the spectacular destruction of Stark’s cliff-side home, glimpsed in earlier footage from the film, which is directed by Jon Favreau’s former “Iron Man” and “Iron Man 2″ consultant Shane Black (“Kiss Kiss Bang Bang”). In the comics, the Mandarin was an exiled orphan who discovers a crashed spaceship. He mastered the alien science he found there and kept […]

Cast of ‘The Avengers,” assemble! You have been summoned to the Oscars. Members of “The Avengers” cast including Robert Downey Jr., Samuel L. Jackson, Chris Evans, Jeremy Renner and Mark Ruffalo will gather together to present at the Hollywood awards show, the show’s producers announced Wednesday. But the super group of actors will not be complete: Scarlett Johansson is currently busy with her Broadway show “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” a spokeswoman from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences told The Times. Chris Hemsworth, who stars in the film “Thor: The Dark World,” set to come out in November, also will not be part of the group. Although none of “The Avengers” actors is up for an Oscar this year, many of them have been nominees in the past. Downey was nominated in 1993 for his lead […]

How many Iron Men does it take to save 13 people plummeting earthward after a plane breaks apart in midair? Granted, it’s kind of a trick question, seeing as how there is only one Tony Stark, but the passengers’ plight made for a gripping Super Bowl teaser touting the May 3 release of “Iron Man 3.” Although “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” director Shane Black’s first entry in the Marvel series looks heavy on the action, the Robert Downey Jr. vehicle wasn’t the only upcoming blockbuster to get airtime during the big game, with new spots debuting for “Star Trek Into Darkness,” “World War Z” and “Snitch,” among other films. In all, Disney promoted three of its new releases, with “The Lone Ranger” and “Oz: The Great and Powerful” joining “Iron Man 3″ as part of the promotional onslaught. With its […]

Forget the Ravens vs. the 49ers. How does “Star Trek” stack up against “Iron Man 3″? More than half of the grown-ups who tune in to the Super Bowl on Sunday will be watching not for the game, but for the ads, according to a recent poll by Harris Interactive. And movie fans in particular have a reason to stay put on the sofa during commercial breaks, with new spots expected for “Fast Six,” “Iron Man 3,” The Lone Ranger,” “Snitch,” “Star Trek Into Darkness,” “Oz the Great and Powerful” and “World War Z.” All in all, it’s a movie marketing bacchanal. Some studios have started teasing their Super Bowl ads early — an ad for an ad, if you will– and one is using the event as an occasion to debut its own app. So before you whip up […]

First it was “Oz: The Great and Powerful.” Then came “The Lone Ranger.” Now, it’s Tony Stark’s turn. Disney has just released a clip from another of its upcoming Super Bowl spots touting one of three upcoming blockbusters. The “Iron Man 3″ footage is only 10 seconds long, but it’s still enough to whet fan’s appetites. Some of the images are reminiscent of the first trailer for the film, which was released in October and implied that this third installment in the franchise would be far darker than its predecessors. The new clip certainly plays up the destruction seemingly wrought by Ben Kingsley’s super-villain the Mandarin. In the comics, the Mandarin was an exiled orphan who discovers a crashed spaceship. He mastered the alien science he found there and kept 10 powerful rings used to drive the ship. He used the rings’ […]

With “The Avengers,” “The Dark Knight Rises,” “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” and more sci-fi and fantasy films, 2012 was a landmark, record-breaking year for spectacle entertainment. But 2013 looks just as promising with a host of big, anticipated sequels — including “Iron Man 3″ and “Star Trek Into Darkness” — and such smart new offerings as “Pacific Rim” and “Elysium” on the calendar. With that in mind, here’s a look at Hero Complex’s 13 must-see movies in 2013. “Oz: The Great and Powerful” (March 8) Sam Raimi’s upcoming “Oz: The Great and Powerful” promises viewers a journey down the yellow brick road that will include a breathtaking array of dazzling visual effects. The Disney film stars James Franco as the man who will become the Wizard of Oz, and takes place well before Dorothy arrives in the faraway fantasy […]
