Few stories inspire the kind of passion and devotion shown by the fans of Joss Whedon’s “Firefly.” The short-lived sci-fi western followed Capt. Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) and his crew as they stole and scavenged their way across the universe, trying to keep their raggedy spaceship Serenity afloat. “Firefly” was canceled a decade ago, but support for the show has spawned a movie sequel, comic series, packed comic convention panels and now a one-hour reunion special on Science Channel. “Firefly: Browncoats Unite” features a roundtable discussion with cast members Fillion, Summer Glau, Alan Tudyk, Adam Baldwin and Sean Maher and writers Tim Minear and Jose Molina, as well as separate interviews with Jewel Staite, Gina Torres and Morena Baccarin. The discussion reveals closely guarded plans for the second season that never was, including a child for Zoe (Torres) and Wash (Tudyk), […]

If Nathan Fillion’s rough-and-tumble Capt. Malcolm Reynolds was the leader of Serenity in Joss Whedon’s short-lived television series “Firefly,” Jewel Staite’s mechanic Kaylee Frye was the ship’s (and the show’s) heart. Staite, Fillion and the rest of the Serenity crew are back on the air together for “Firefly: Browncoats Unite,” a Science Channel special commemorating the show’s 10th anniversary. The one-hour special features a roundtable discussion with cast members Fillion, Summer Glau, Alan Tudyk, Adam Baldwin and Sean Maher, and writers Tim Minear and Jose Molina, as well as separate interviews with Staite, Gina Torres and Morena Baccarin. The special also includes footage from this summer’s “Firefly” reunion at Comic-Con International’s Hall H, during which the cast members reflected on the show’s premature cancellation a decade ago and subsequent second life on the big screen. The special airs Sunday at […]

Mad scientists and mechanical men, space cowboys and time travelers, man-monsters and man-eating aliens — clearly this is our kind of crowd. We came up with a list (in no particular order) of 50 essential characters from the sci-fi small screen. Check them out in the gallery above, or better yet, head to the iTunes store and download our Hero Complex Magazine app, which features our Sci-Fi 50 as well as interviews with Joseph Gordon-Levitt (“The Dark Knight Rises” and “Looper”), Jonathan Frakes (“Star Trek: The Next Generation”) and Benedict Cumberbatch (“Sherlock Holmes” and the upcoming “Star Trek” sequel), a story about Ridley Scott (“Alien,” “Prometheus”) and more. The magazine app also features extra behind-the-scenes photos, video and an interactive “Star Trek” quiz. The invasion from above began on June 27, 1949. On that evening, as America sat down to […]

Fans of “Firefly” keep the imagined sci-fi Western universe alive, Joss Whedon told more than 4,000 people (many of whom camped in line overnight) in the jam-packed Ballroom 20 at Comic-Con International on Friday afternoon. Whedon also talked about an upcoming comic book series from Dark Horse, which will pick up some time after “Firefly” and “Serenity” left off. The emotional panel, which started and ended with tears and standing ovations, reunited most the main cast of the short-lived but much-loved series. Creator (and “The Avengers” director) Whedon; actors Nathan Fillion, Alan Tudyk, Summer Glau, Adam Baldwin and Sean Maher; and writers Tim Minear and Jose Molina took photos of one another and the crowd as they entered the stage, greeted by deafening applause. “Firefly,” which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, chronicles the misadventures of Capt. Malcolm Reynolds (Fillion) […]

It’s almost here — we’re just one week from the start of the 2012 Hero Complex Film Festival and with the franchise in its third year we’ve moved to a sweet new home (Regal Cinemas at LA Live, where in September we brought you a 30th anniversary screening of “Raiders of the Lost Ark” with Steven Spielberg and surprise guest Harrison Ford) and expanded the program (four days now with more than a dozen guests, including three that haven’t been announced). To get a bead on the festival, peruse the photo gallery above — be sure to click the “CAPTIONS ON” option if you don’t see text across the bottom of each image – and you’ll get a snapshot description of all of eight of our separately ticketed screenings. The box here on the right leads to the ticketing page. And how about those fun images in the gallery? […]

Fox canceled Joss Whedon‘s 2002 television series “Firefly” after a meager14 episodes were produced, but you can’t take the sky away from this space Western — the series maintains a cult following among “Browncoats,” the fans who have taken the series to U.S. Navy ships and even outer space. Fans were disappointed when the show’s big-screen sequel, “Serenity,” didn’t spark the prayed-for second season. Now, Capt. Malcolm Reynolds and his ragged, vagabond crew are back on television on Discovery‘s Science Channel — and while there aren’t new adventures, Science is the first channel to roll out all 14 episodes in the proper order, “the way Joss had intended it,” as a Discovery spokeswoman puts it. The season finale airs May 29. Our Noelene Clark caught up with “Firefly” and “Serenity” cast member Summer Glau, who played River Tam, the ship’s […]
