‘Amazing Spider-Man 2′: Andrew Garfield swings into Super Bowl ad frenzy

“The Amazing Spider-Man 2″ brought more explosive action to Super Bowl Sunday, debuting new scenes from the anticipated sequel in a big game spot. The film, which like its predecessor, 2012’s “The Amazing Spider-Man,” is directed by Marc Webb (“[500] Days of Summer”), has Andrew Garfield’s Spidey battling multiple villains, including Foxx’s Electro and Paul Giamatti’s Rhino. In the first part of the clip, which was released Thursday, the electrifying antagonist is glimpsed unleashing some of his shocking powers, while Spidey flies through the sky and leaps onto the streets of New York. Here, Spidey is sky-born once again, leaping through blasts of fire and destruction, though as Peter, Garfield’s also seen exchanging a passionate kiss with Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy. In the new film, Chris Cooper and Dane DeHaan play Norman Osborn and his son, Harry, respectively, while Sally […]

‘Transformers: Age of Extinction’ Super Bowl spot: Wahlberg, Autobots

'Transformers: Age of Extinction'
Fans got a detailed look at Michael Bay’s summer blockbuster “Transformers: Age of Extinction” during Sunday’s Super Bowl, and the scope of the imagery in the new teaser suggests that the master of explosive popcorn entertainment might be looking to outdo himself with the fourth installment in the franchise. Written by Ehren Kruger and directed by Bay, “Transformers: Age of Extinction” sees actor Mark Wahlberg join the series about warring tribes of alien robots with a propensity for causing massive destruction here on planet Earth. Last May, Paramount released images featuring some of the updated character designs from the movie, including shots of an upgraded Optimus Prime and two new Autobots that will battle Decepticons right alongside him. The photos, taken on the Monument Valley, Utah, set of the sequel, featured Optimus Prime as a customized Western Star truck, along with […]

‘Captain America': Cap, Widow, Falcon in action in ‘Winter Soldier’ ad

Steve Rogers gains a clearer understanding of the threat he’s up against in the new trailer for “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” which debuted Sunday during the Super Bowl. The clip promoting the April 4 release had a recognizably melancholy tone as Chris Evans’ patriotic hero grapples with the moral ambiguities of the modern age — a theme the actor said will dominate the Marvel sequel — even as he engages in serious battle with the help of Anthony Mackie’s Falcon and Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff, or Black Widow. “For Steve, it’s about what is right,” Evans said in an interview with Hero Complex. “He’s relatively acclimated to the modern day — it’s not tech shock anymore, he’s not just like, ‘What’s a cellphone?’ It’s more about, given his situation, given the company he works for, what are we doing […]

‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ big game teaser: Evans in action

An action-packed new teaser for the “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” Super Bowl spot debuted Friday, featuring stars Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson and Anthony Mackie in full on action movie mode. “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” arrives with the promise of bringing to the screen the famous 2005 comic book storyline by writer Ed Brubaker and artist Steve Epting that inspired the name of the Marvel sequel, and the new film certainly will feel like a departure from Joe Johnston’s 2011 hit “Captain America: The First Avenger,” with its World War II-era focus that chronicled the beginning of Steve Rogers’ transformation into the Marvel icon. The sequel, which is set after the events depicted in 2012’s “The Avengers,” sees Evans’ hero having remained in the employ of S.H.I.E.L.D., occasionally teaming with Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff, or Black Widow, on key […]

‘Amazing Spider-Man 2′ debuts electrifying Super Bowl teaser

“You wanted to be the hero, now you gotta pay the price.” It’s an ominous message Jamie Foxx’s shocking villain Electro has for Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker in a new teaser for “The Amazing Spider-Man 2.” Released Thursday, the clip is designed to tout the movie’s upcoming Super Bowl spot, which is set to air Sunday during the big game. The film, which like its predecessor, 2012’s “The Amazing Spider-Man,” is directed by Marc Webb (“[500] Days of Summer”), has Spidey battling multiple villains, including Foxx’s Electro and Paul Giamatti’s Rhino. In the brief clip, the electrifying antagonist is glimpsed unleashing some of his shocking powers, while Spidey flies through the sky and leaps onto the streets of New York. Emma Stone returns in the sequel as Peter Parker’s gal pal Gwen Stacy, with Chris Cooper and Dane DeHaan playing […]

What would have improved Super Bowl XLVII? ‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’

"G.I. Joe: Retaliation" trailer: "Be a Cobra!"
Super Bowl Sunday has come and gone, but Super Bowl Sunday commercials? We’re going to dissect those things forever. Which brings us to the latest wave: Super Bowl commercials you didn’t see. All things science-and-future site i09 has declared this trailer for “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” “the best Super Bowl commercial that didn’t air during the Super Bowl” — but should have. We were going to argue, until we watched it. Super Bowl halftime show: Beyonce as Wonder Woman? The first installment in the franchise, “G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra,” was “critic-proof,” as they say. A popcorn movie with lots of action, lots of explosions, all while not making an awful lot of sense. It all added up to $302 million in worldwide box-office revenue, according to Box Office Mojo. So it’s no surprise that Channing Tatum is back, with a new crew […]

Super Bowl: Four ads that appeal to our inner geek

Super Bowl ads (featured image)
“Star Wars” fans hoping for a sequel to last year’s “Bark Side of the Moon” or 2011’s “Use the Force” were disappointed during this year’s Super Bowl. The Volkswagen spots were hits in previous years, but Sunday’s advertising lineup featured no pint-sized Sith Lords or adorable dogs barking “The Imperial March.” Game day wasn’t completely void of heroic fare, however, with trailers for “Iron Man 3,” “The Lone Ranger,” “Oz the Great and Powerful” and “Star Trek Into Darkness.” And at least a few ads tickled our inner geek. Here’s a look at four of them. 1. “The Rock in Morning Run” (Milk): Action hero Dwayne Johnson is on a mission to procure milk for his daughter and her friends, and he won’t let anything stand in his way — not even bank robbers, loose lions and rhinos or an […]

Beyonce’s Super Bowl performance a Wonder Woman tryout?

Beyonce as Wonder Woman?
Beyoncé’s Super Bowl performance has been linked to the super-secret Illuminati sect, and some wondered whether it was linked to the Super Bowl blackout. The rest of us? We had visions of Wonder Woman dancing in our heads. But here’s a question: Why is it that seemingly every comic book character has had a shot at the big screen of late except she of the golden lasso? (OK, we’re exaggerating. But only slightly.) Isn’t it time for a Wonder Woman movie already? As Beyoncé told Hero Complex as far back as 2008, she was gunning for the movie role of Wonder Woman. “I want to do a superhero movie and what would be better than Wonder Woman? It would be great. And it would be a very bold choice. A black Wonder Woman would be a powerful thing. It’s time […]

Super Bowl commercials 2013: Clean up those zombies. Now.

Walking Dead Super Bowl ad
Time Warner saluted “The Walking Dead” — coming back on Sunday — with a Super Bowl commercial that showed the zombie apocalypse might not be so bad. Except for the mess. Norman Reedus appears in the commercial as cross-bow-wielding redneck Daryl. The busy, disgusted mom in the Time Warner spot sternly tells her husband — busy on his tablet — and Daryl to clean up that pile of walkers. It was an ad sure to tickle the funny bones of “Walking Dead” fans everywhere. But there was more to ogle. Hollywood trotted out potential summer blockbusters, including Brad Pitt’s zombie feature, “World War Z,” just before kickoff. WATCH: Game day teasers for ‘Star Trek,’ Iron Man,’ ‘Lone Ranger’ In the first half of the game, promos aired for “Star Trek Into Darkness” and the “Oz: The Great and Powerful.” After […]

‘Iron Man 3′: Super Bowl spot leads pack of Disney’s latest Marvels

"Iron Man 3." (Marvel/Disney)
How many Iron Men does it take to save 13 people plummeting earthward after a plane breaks apart in midair? Granted, it’s kind of a trick question, seeing as how there is only one Tony Stark, but the passengers’ plight made for a gripping Super Bowl teaser touting the May 3 release of “Iron Man 3.” Although “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” director Shane Black’s first entry in the Marvel series looks heavy on the action, the Robert Downey Jr. vehicle wasn’t the only upcoming blockbuster to get airtime during the big game, with new spots debuting for “Star Trek Into Darkness,” “World War Z” and “Snitch,” among other films. In all, Disney promoted three of its new releases, with “The Lone Ranger” and “Oz: The Great and Powerful” joining “Iron Man 3″ as part of the promotional onslaught. With its […]
