Super Bowl ads

Forget the Ravens vs. the 49ers. How does “Star Trek” stack up against “Iron Man 3”? More than half of the grown-ups who tune in to the Super Bowl on Sunday will be watching not for the game, but for the ads, according to a recent poll by Harris Interactive. And movie fans in particular have a reason to stay put on the sofa during commercial breaks, with new spots expected for “Fast Six,” “Iron Man 3,” The Lone Ranger,” “Snitch,” “Star Trek Into Darkness,” “Oz the Great and Powerful” and “World War Z.” All in all, it’s a movie marketing bacchanal. Some studios have started teasing their Super Bowl ads early — an ad for an ad, if you will– and one is using the event as an occasion to debut its own app. So before you whip up […]

This post has been corrected, as detailed below. “Warm Bodies” — a film about a zombie who falls in love with a living, breathing teenage girl — opens in theaters this weekend. But does anyone want to see a romantic zombie movie? Despite the film’s unusual conceit, Keith Simanton, managing editor at IMDB.com, predicted in a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times that “Warm Bodies” would win the box office this weekend with about $17.4 million. Top 10 zombie movies at the boxoffice He noted that the 2009 zombie comedy “Zombieland” made $24.7 million its opening weekend — but that it had some bigger names involved, including Woody Harrelson and Bill Murray. “People had heard that Bill Murray was in it, and that added a cool factor,” he said. “Something like ‘Warm Bodies’ doesn’t have that cachet, so I’m already bumping the per-screen […]

The zombie apocalypse is on its way. “We’ve lost the East Coast.” “China’s dark.” Indeed, things don’t look promising for the human race in the new teaser trailer for the Super Bowl spot for Paramount’s Brad Pitt zombie movie, “World War Z,” the Marc Forster-directed adaptation of Max Brooks’ acclaimed novel. It’s the first footage from the movie since the release of a gripping first trailer for the film debuted in November. That clip played like a taut thriller tapping into modern fears about the fall of mankind. “World War Z” stars Pitt as Gerry Lane, a United Nations fact-finder and family man who desperately races around the globe to determine the origins of a zombie pandemic that has toppled civilization in short order. Mireille Enos, of late of “The Killing,” plays his wife. Forster was an interesting choice to […]

Alright, “Star Trek” fans, the wait is over — the wait to download the new “Star Trek” app, that is. With only about 100 days until J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek Into Darkness” opens in theaters (but really who’s counting?), the new app is now available for free download in the U.S. and Canada for iOS and Android at Apple’s App Store and Google’s Play Store. Designed to appeal to hard-core “Trek” fans and more casual users, the “Star Trek” app comes with between 30-40 missions, with eight to 10 available at any given point and the option to skip missions that don’t seem especially interesting. New missions will become available every week. Some missions will involve scavenger hunts, such as finding and scanning the latest “Star Trek Into Darkness” poster or visiting an AMC theater; some tasks will use an […]

First it was “Oz: The Great and Powerful.” Then came “The Lone Ranger.” Now, it’s Tony Stark’s turn. Disney has just released a clip from another of its upcoming Super Bowl spots touting one of three upcoming blockbusters. The “Iron Man 3” footage is only 10 seconds long, but it’s still enough to whet fan’s appetites. Some of the images are reminiscent of the first trailer for the film, which was released in October and implied that this third installment in the franchise would be far darker than its predecessors. The new clip certainly plays up the destruction seemingly wrought by Ben Kingsley’s super-villain the Mandarin. In the comics, the Mandarin was an exiled orphan who discovers a crashed spaceship. He mastered the alien science he found there and kept 10 powerful rings used to drive the ship. He used the rings’ […]

“The Lone Ranger” isn’t the only film teasing an upcoming Super Bowl ad this week: Disney also released a munchkin-sized teaser of its latest spot for Sam Raimi’s “Oz: The Great and Powerful,” as well as several new character portraits. The movie recounts the tale of just how Oz (James Franco) journeyed from dusty Kansas to the glorious Technicolor world over the rainbow. In the screenplay, credited to Mitchell Kapner and David Lindsay-Abaire, a strong storm blows Franco’s magician/con man into the distant land, where he encounters talking china dolls, flying monkeys and several witches, including Mila Kunis’ Theodora, Rachel Weisz’s Evanora and Michelle Williams’ sunny Glinda. It’s the first new film from Raimi since his under-appreciated 2009 horror outing “Drag Me to Hell,” and it sees the director returning to the massive blockbuster territory he explored with a trilogy […]

Disney trotted out a brief 20 seconds of its new 90-second spot for “The Lone Ranger” on Tuesday morning, hoping to stoke interest in the Old West action-adventure that sees Johnny Depp’s painted Tonto riding alongside Armie Hammer’s masked man. The full clip will premiere Sunday during the Super Bowl pregame show. The film, set for release July 3, sees Depp team up again with his frequent collaborator, director Gore Verbinski — the pair worked on three of Disney’s ultra-successful “Pirates” films in addition to the acclaimed animated release “Rango.” Verbinski told Hero Complex in 2011 that he’s interested in a sly, somewhat subversive version of the classic Old West adventure that presents the “faithful Indian companion” as the wry central voice of the story. The plot centers on the advent of the railroad in the American West, and hijackings that […]

The invasion is underway — “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” won’t arrive in theaters until June 29, but the commando sequel is already trying to win hearts and minds with the new commercial that airs on Super Bowl Sunday during the big game on NBC. It’s a film that will be driven by action and sprinkled with comedy, according to producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, but it also aspires to bridge an interesting pop-culture generation gap. When the first film in the franchise, “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra,” arrived in theaters in 2009, di Bonaventura heard from plenty of confused people — the common link was that most had grown up in the 1960s or 1970s when G.I. Joe was a brand name synonymous with the 12-inch-tall military-man toy that introduced the term “action figure.” They were all unaware of the 1980s reinvention of the brand — in Marvel Comics, toys and […]

Fans of “The Hunger Games” are getting a closer look at the characters brought to life in the film’s second trailer, which will air during the Super Bowl this Sunday. “The Hunger Games,” based on the bestselling children’s book series by Suzanne Collins, is set in a post-apocalyptic nation called Panem. Two children from each of the nation’s 12 districts are plucked to compete in a cruel, televised fight to the death — as punishment for rebellion 75 years prior, and for the amusement of the wealthy Capitol residents. Jennifer Lawrence plays the film’s heroine, Katniss Everdeen, a teenager who volunteers to compete in her sister’s place. The film will be released in IMAX theaters March 23, Lionsgate announced Thursday. The new trailer reveals more of the reaping (the ceremony in which tributes are selected), a teary embrace between Katniss […]

If you tune in to the Super Bowl on Sunday you’ll see a parade of commercials for Hollywood’s upcoming heavy-hitter hopefuls (“The Hunger Games,” “The Avengers,” “G.I. Joe: Retaliation,” “John Carter”) but two even bigger box-office brand names — “Transformers” and “Star Wars” — will be selling something beyond the silver screen. “Star Wars” is back in a Volkswagen ad (after last year’s super-popular tiny-tot Darth Vader spot) while the massive space robots from Michael Bay’s film franchise will be bringing their unique version of heavy-metal combat to a pre-game, 30-second ad for Transformers: The Ride 3-D, which opens in May at Universal Studios Hollywood. Here’s a snippet that, if you think about it, is a promotional teaser for a commercial about a ride based on a movie created around a toy line. The ad will also introduce the website PrepareForBattle.com, where fans can check out tie-in videos or […]
